George Darwin was the fifth child of Charles Darwin, the first proponent of evolution. He initially trained as a barrister and was finally an astronomer, becoming Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge University and President of the Royal Astronomical Society. In between he was a mathematician and scientist, graduating as Second Wrangler in the Mathematics Tripos in 1868 from Trinity College Cambridge. Francis Galton was George Darwin’s second cousin. He began his studies in medicine, turning after two years to mathematics at Trinity College Cambridge. -

The last of the important Zusâtze (see pages 637-663) is devoted to an exposition of the theory of systems of simul taneous differential equations of the first order. Having thus passed in quick review the contents of the book, it is now apparent that the translator has certainly accom plished his purpose of making it more useful to the student of pure mathematics. There remains the question whether there are not other additions which would have been desirable in accomplishing this purpose. There is at least one which, in the reviewer's opinion, should have been inserted. In connection with the theory of formal integration by series it would have been easy to insert a proof of the convergence in general of the series for the case of second order equations; and one can but regret that this was not done. Such a treat ment would have required only a half-dozen pages; and it would have added greatly to the value of this already valuable section. The translator's reason for omitting it is obvious; he was making no use of function-theoretic considerations, and such a proof would have required the introduction of these notions. But the great value to the student of having at hand this proof, for the relatively simple case of second order equations, seems to be more than a justification for departing in this case from the general plan of the book; it seems indeed to be a demand for it. -

In this chapter we consider the cohesion theory, which is the best formulation to explain how water can get to the top of tall trees and vines. I. THE PROBLEM Let us consider why it is hard for water to get to the top of trees. A suc- tion pump can lift water only to the barometric height, which is the height that is supported by atmospheric pressure (1.0 atm) or 1033 cm (10.33 m; 33.89 feet) (Salisbury and Ross, 1978, p. 49). If a hose or pipe is sealed at one end and filled with water, and then placed in an upright position with the open end down and in water, atmospheric pressure will support the water column to 10.33 meters, theoretically. At this height the pressure equals the vapor pressure of water at its temperature. Above this height of 1033 cm, water turns to vapor. When the pressure is reduced in a column of water so that vapor forms or air bubbles appear (the air coming out of solution), the column is said to cavitate (Salisbury and Ross, 1978, p. 49). My father, Don Kirkham, and his students tried to see how far they could climb the outside back stairs of the Agronomy Building at Iowa State University with a hose, closed end in hand and with the hose’s bottom in a water bucket on the ground. -

It embraces the entire sweep of the natural sciences, but focuses particularly on over-arching themes such as biological diversity, evolution, taxonomy, science policy and conservation. The Society works through a network of partnerships in the scientific community. In an era of specialisation the Society promotes the transfer of information across disciplinary boundaries. It collaborates with government and international organisations to highlight the urgency and magnitude of the task of documenting the world’s flora and fauna. The Linnean Society was founded in 1788 for ‘the cultivation of the Science of Natural History in all its branches’. The Society is named after the great 18th Century Swedish naturalist, Carl Linnaeus (1707 - 1778), who created the binomial system of biological classification now used throughout the world. The Society acquired Linnaeus’s collection of plant and animal specimens, and his books and letters, from its first President, James Edward Smith. The Society has been at the heart of many scientific and cultural developments relating to our understanding of the natural world. Most notably, Charles Darwin’s and Alfred Russell Wallace’s epoch-making papers on evolution by natural selection were first read at a meeting of the Society. The Society is proud of its past, but is equally enthusiastic about its future. Today it encourages discussion and research by: ♦ publishing three leading international journals on biology, botany and zoology.
