Box 51, Wanneroo, WA, 6946, Australia. * Corresponding author [email protected] ABSTRACT Ten mammal species of conservation priority have been lost from Dirk Hartog Island, off the coast of Western Australia, most likely due to predation by the feral cat. We examined the diet of fourteen feral cats from Dirk Hartog Island to understand the potential impact of cat predation on remaining extant species. We examined the contents of the stomach and large intestine, and used stable isotope analysis of faeces, liver and muscle. The vertebrate species identified in the digestive tracts included at least six bird species, including two terrestrial birds and four shorebirds, seven reptile species, and one mammal (introduced Mus musculus). Analysis of δ13C and δ15N determined that the diet of feral cats was primarily terrestrially derived, although samples from the northern area of Dirk Hartog Island showed a skew towards marine derived food sources. The research findings showed that on this island, in the absence of rabbits, cats preyed mainly on terrestrial birds and reptiles. PIXLEY, C.M.G., M.B.E., V.R.D., Kt.O.N., F.R.Hist.S.Q.] (Read at a Meeting of the Society on 24 September 1970.) Joseph Conrad in his writings, refers to "The mysteriously born traditions of seacraft, command, and unity in an occu pation in which men's lives depend on each other." Still true today, how much more was this so with the mariners of long ago, who sailed in smaU ships for thousands of lonely leagues through unknown seas, for on them alone rested the safety of the ship and all on board. Dr. Johnson wrote "No man will be a saUor who has con trivance to get himself into jaU, for being in a ship is being in a jail with the chance of being drowned." There was more than an element of truth in this, for the seaman who refused to sail could be clapped in jail; whUst THE PRESIDENT, COMMANDER NORMAN S PIXLEY 79 those who did sail faced months in a confined space with acute discomfort, severe punishment at times, and provisions and water which deteriorated as the voyage proceeded. Scurvy kiUed more than storm and shipwreck until James Cook in his first voyage proved that it could be prevented. Clothing was rarely changed, the sailor coming wet to his hammock from his watch on deck in bad weather. Rats and cockroaches lived and thrived amongst the pro visions, adding to the problems of hygiene and health. -

BOOK REVIEWS Susan Hunt and Paul Carter, Terre Napoleon: Australia Through French Eyes 1800-1804, published by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales, distributed by Bloomings Books (37 Burwood Road, Hawthorn, Victoria, 3122), $85 Hardback ISBN 0949753815, $45 Paperback ISBN 949753874. In Explorations, No. 8 (December 1989), I reviewed Jacqueline Bonnemain's, Elliott Forsyth's and Bernard Smith's wonderful book Baudin in Australian Waters: The Artwork of the French Voyage of Discovery to the Southern Lands 1800-1804, (Oxford, 1988). Although I had nothing but praise for this book, I was then pessimistic enough to declare that 'Baudin's ... name seems destined to be known by only a handful of Australians for many years to come'. Thanks to the splendid 'Terre Napoleon' exhibition, held recently in Sydney and Canberra, I have been proven delightfully wrong! The beautiful catalogue of the exhibition owes a great deal to the work of Bonnemain, Forsyth and Smith, particularly with regard to biographical and descriptive notes. Although Terre Napoleon: Australia Through French Eyes 1800-1804 is not as rich a scholarly resource as Baudin in Australian Waters ..., it is a fine example of book production and the illustrations are produced to the same high standards. It is certainly more affordable.* When Nicolas-Thomas Baudin's expedition was outfitted in Le Havre, Charles- Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846) was attracted to the prospect of adventure in southern waters and enlisted as an assistant gunner, 4th class. But when the expedition's artists deserted at He de France (Mauritius), Lesueur took on the task of official artist. -
The Meeting of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin
A Cordial Encounter? 53 A Cordial Encounter? The Meeting of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin (8-9 April, 1802) Jean Fornasiero and John West-Sooby1 The famous encounter between Nicolas Baudin and Matthew Flinders in the waters off Australia’s previously uncharted south coast has now entered the nation’s folklore. At a time when their respective countries were locked in conflict at home and competing for strategic advantage on the world stage, the two captains were able to set aside national rivalries and personal disappointments in order to greet one another with courtesy and mutual respect. Their meeting is thus portrayed as symbolic of the triumph of international co-operation over the troubled geopolitics of the day. What united the two expeditions—the quest for knowledge in the spirit of the Enlightenment—proved to be stronger than what divided them. This enduring—and endearing—image of the encounter between Baudin and Flinders is certainly well supported by the facts as we know them. The two captains did indeed conduct themselves on that occasion in an exemplary manner, readily exchanging information about their respective discoveries and advising one another about the navigational hazards they should avoid or about safe anchorages where water and other supplies could be obtained. Furthermore, the civility of their meeting points to a strong degree of mutual respect, and perhaps also to a recognition of their shared experience as navigators whom fate had thrown together on the lonely and treacherous shores of the “unknown coast” of Australia. And yet, as appealing as it may be, this increasingly idealized image of the encounter runs the risk of masking some of its subtleties and complexities. -

History West, November 2015 November 2015 GENERAL MEETING The next meeting at Stirling House is on Wednesday 18 November at 6pm. Dr Bob Reece will present a paper entitled Yagan and Other Prominent Swan River Aborigines. Refreshments available from 5.30pm; Bookshop open until 6pm In recent years, Yagan has become a hero figure for the descendants of the original Aboriginal owners of Swan River and a by-word for their response to British settlement of Swan River Colony in the years after June 1829. They see him as a resistance figure (‘freedom fighter’, if you like) who offered armed opposition to the settlers, their expropriation without compensation of traditional lands and their disdain for an ancient Aboriginal culture. Aboriginal society lacked any political hierarchy, but Yagan represented a new form of leadership. Fearful of his violent exploits which saw him declared an outlaw with a price on his head, the small and vulnerable settler population heaved a collective sigh of relief in 1833 when news came that he been treacherously shot by a thirteen year old boy for the reward. The emergence of Aboriginal people on to the national political stage after the 1967 referendum accelerated the need for Aboriginal hero figures who could symbolise resistance to European settler dominance both in the past and the present. In Western Australia, Yagan was a familiar figure but the erection of a bronze statue in his honour on Heirisson Island in 1984 raised his profile in more than the obvious way. From a fresh examination of the contemporary sources, this paper will offer a perspective on Yagan (and by extension other notable Swan River Aboriginal figures of his time) that will hopefully assist us in seeing him as he was rather than what he has become. -

Photo - Richard Manning Return to 1616 – Ecological Restoration Project Dirk Hartog Island is Western Australia’s largest island. When visited by Dirk Hartog in 1616, the island was in pristine condition with a rich mammal fauna and flourishing vegetation. Since this first European landing on Australian soil, introduced plants and animals have degraded the island causing the local extinction of native species. Return to 1616 is an ambitious project helping to restore the island’s natural ecosystems. Introduced sheep and goats have been removed because their grazing and trampling damages native plants and reduces the food and shelter available for native animals. Feral cats are efficient hunters and have been eradicated from the island to make it safe for native animal species that are gradually being returned. These are the Shark Bay bandicoot, dibbler, chuditch, brush-tailed mulgara, greater stick-nest rat, desert mouse, Shark Bay mouse, heath mouse, woylie, boodie and western grasswren. In addition, rufous and banded hare-wallabies, have been included to improve their long-term survival. These animals are in need of conservation protection.
