#WINGSUP 3 TENNESSEE TECH FOOTBALL

OFFENSE YOUNG GUN: Bailey Fisher currently holds the top spot at quarterback, coming into the game as a true fresh- man. He graduated early after finishing his campaign at Rabun County (Ga.) and enrolled into Tech in January, going through spring practice with the Golden Eagles. He has shown plenty of promise with the Tech offense and could be a valuable weapon.

At Rabun County as a senior, he passed for 3,341 yards with 43 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,283 yards. In his prep career, he threw for 9,383 yards and 113 touchdowns, while rushing for 3,075 yards and 57 more scores.

SWITCHING SIDES: Two major names from the Tennessee Tech defense will see action on the offensive side of the ball in 2018 as Josh Cunningham and Deven Sullivan return to offensive skill positions. Cunningham played as a cornerback in 2017, while Sullivan was in the linebacker corps to bolster their ranks after Josh Poplar had to miss the season.

Sullivan finished 2017 with 51 total tackles, including eight for-loss. He also recovered a fumble against Tennessee State. His season high was 10 tackles against Western Illinois. He was signed under then-head coach BAILEY FISHER | FR. | QB Watson Brown to play running back before Marcus Satterfield and his staff moved him to defense.

Cunningham finished 2017 with 53 tackles, six pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. He recorded 11 tackles against Tennessee State. He spent 2016 as a wide receiver in Satterfield’s first season at Tech, catching 17 passes for 178 yards.

EMPTY NEST: The biggest hole to fill for Tech on offense is wide receiver Dontez Byrd, who wrapped up his eli- gibility and is currently with the NFL’s . The first Golden Eagle to ever surpass the 1,000 receiving yard plateau in a season, Byrd leaves some pretty big shoes to fill.

Tech did bring in a graduate transfer and a few freshmen who could grow into the role, however. Melvin Holland Jr. joins the Golden Eagles from Minnesota, while Brad Clark, Jeremiah Edwards and Cam Singletary have all shown impressive moves in camp. With those players joining thr returning core of Cunningham, R.D. Ford, Seth Huner and Hunter Coleman, there could be some impressive days ahead for the Tech receivers.

GROUND GAME: Tech saw running back Yeedee Thaenrat transfer to Towson, but the Golden Eagles’ top runner from a season ago, Andrew Goldsmith, is back, ready to lead Tech on the running attack. Goldsmith finished 2017 with 589 yards and three touchdowns on 116 carries, while also catching 15 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for a career-high 121 yards against Eastern Illinois. Following Goldsmith on the charts is senior Sullivan, freshman David Gist -- a Cookeville product, and D.J. Worthy. JOSH CUNNINGHAM | SR. | WR

UP FRONT: While there are a few familiar faces on the Tech offensive line, it’s pretty much an entirely different look for the Golden Eagle front five. Under the direction of Jake Thornton, who spent last season with the University of Alabama as a graduate assistant, the offensive line has been shaken up and reshaped. Providing protection at center is Daly Cull, who spent a year as a preferred walk-on at Memphis, then transferred to Tech, rejoining his high school head coach -- former Hendersonville High skipper Bruce Hatfield, who is currently coaching the Tech linebackers. Norman Hand, Mike Rhoades, Eric Kareem and Kurt Huff provide the first-line protection, while Schaefer Almoyan, Manny Avina, Riley Bodine, Philipp Tolksdorf and Mackenan Thompson provide back-up.

POWER PACK: Tech returns four tight ends who could prove to be gamechangers for the Golden Eagle offense. Mitchell McClurg, an Appalachian State transfer, is in his second full season with Tech, and could see a breakout season. Tavin Kilpatrick, a sophomore from Greenback, had a great freshman season, and they’ll be assisted with veteran leadership from senior Alex Carling and junior Clint Zierke. The foursome provides plenty of versa- tility or whichever package the offense sets up in.

OVERSEEING THE OFFENSE: Tech’s offensive coordinator should have a familiar name to those who have followed the Golden Eagles -- Tre Lamb, who was the quarterback for the Golden Eagles’ OVC Championship team in 2011. He was most recently at Mercer before coming home to Cookeville. DEVEN SULLIVAN | SR. | RB

4 #WINGSUP GAME 1 | AUG. 30, 2018 | @ CHATTANOOGA

DEFENSE WELCOME BACK: Redshirt junior linebacker Josh Poplar has come a long way in just over a year. Just before the start of the 2017 fall camp, Poplar was diagnosed with a stroke following the team’s fitness test and a hole in his heart discovered. Poplar continued to work with the team, even though he was unable to play in the 2017 campaign. An all-Ohio Valley Conference second-team selection in 2016, it was hard to keep Tech’s leading tackler down, even if he was kept to the sidelines, serving as a student assistant.

Now Poplar is cleared to play and is back in old form, serving notice to opposing defenses that he’s back and ready to get to work. He’s joined by a fairly deep Tech linebacker corps, including Aderick Moore, who led the Golden Eagles in tackling in 2017, and Jake Warwick, who returns to the defense after a year as a fullback. Warwick is the grandson of famed Golden Eagle linebacker Lonnie Warwick, who later became a member of the legendary defensive unit.

BRINGING THE HOUSE: It will be hard for opposing offenses not to see senior defensive end Tim Collins out on the field. With his imposing 6-5, 250-pound stature, Collins is the tallest starter on the Tech defense. He’s also known to make some noise as he disrupts the offense. A preseason all-Ohio Valley Conference selection, Collins JOSH POPLAR | R-JR. | LB looks to build on his 2017 campaign, where he finished the year with 51 tackles, including five for-loss for six yards, six QB hurries, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

NICKEL-PLATED: Tech is switching to the 4-2-5 defense this season from the 4-3 run in the past couple of seasons. With the switch, Eriq Fadhunsi and Branson Kramm will slightly shift duties as they take on the nickel position on the field. Fadahunsi, a Temple transfer, has been a reliable defensive back for the Golden Eagles and could make some noise in the adopted role.

EYES ON THE BALL: Providing deep support as a free safety, Deontay Wilson proved to be one of Tech’s top pass defenders in 2017, making 64 tackles, while picking off a pass and breaking up two. He also recovered a fumble for 13 yards. During the 2017 season, he had 12 tackles against Western Illinois, his career-high, and 10 against Austin Peay. There is some upperclassman leadership in the secondary with senior A.J. Flemister at left corner, junior Shannon Fayne at strong safety and junior Dami Adekunjo at right corner.

But following that first line, it’s a young, but talented group: Brian Thompson, a freshman at left corner, picked off eight passes for 186 yards as a senior at East Nashville Magnet last season, Aidan Raines at strong safety was a fantastic receiver at Mt. Juliet, and Seth Carlisle was a tremendous quarterback and defensive back at Macon County, picking off two passes and returning one for a touchdown.

UP FRONT: On the front four on Tech’s defensive line, there’s not a whole lot different. In addition to Collins TIM COLLINS | SR. | DE at DE, Anthony Akers is at defensive tackle, Xavier Schlueter starts at nose, while Chris McElderry is taking on what the Tech staff is labeling the Five. The quartet is three seniors and one junior, giving Tech some valuable experience on the front lines.

Backing up Collins at DE is freshman Sam Oldham, a prized prospect from Cookeville, who is also the son of Ten- nessee Tech president Dr. Phil Oldham. His work ethic and skills impressed the staff enough to earn the second spot on the depth chart. Meanwhile, there is experience back on the relief spots on the defensive line with junior Taylor Underwood at DT, sophomore Jale’n Gladney at nose and redshirt junior Andrew Swicegood at Five.

OVERSEEING THE DEFENSE: When Dewayne Alexander took over the Golden Eagles, he knew exactly who he wanted to lead Tech’s defense as he brought in Donnie Suber as defensive coordinator. A graduate from Georgia Southern, Suber was the defensive coordinator at Cumberland, then took over as the head coach once Alexander left to become the offensive line coach for Watson Brown at Tech. After Brown’s retirement in 2015, Alexander went back to Cumberland to assist for Suber, before taking a position at East Tennessee State.

SPECIAL TEAMS PUTTING ON THE POINTS: Nick Madonia continues to be the kicker for the Golden Eagles, and he certainly has the numbers to back up why. A program-record 57-yarder in the books, nearly perfect on PATs and solid on field goals. He finished 2017 with a 21-for-21 mark on point-after attempts, while he was 9-for-14 on field goals. He was 1-for-1 from under 30, 6-for-7 from 30-to-39, 1-for-5 from 40-to-49, and 1-for-1 from beyond 50. His longest last season was 51 at Eastern Illinois.

Madonia has made 18 of his 25 field goals in his career, an accuracy mark of 72.0 percent. John Arnold has the best percentage, hitting 20 of his 27 (74.1). David Collett has the career record for field goals made with 49.

KICK OFF: Haidar Zaidan returns as Tech’s kickoff specialist. Last season, he had 34 kickoffs for a total of 2,020 yards, averaging 59.4 yards. He had 16 touchbacks and two sail out of bounds.

COMING TO AMERICA: The atest addition to the Golden Eagles’ special teams is Luke Maynard, a rugby-style punter from Australia. Signing with the Golden Eagles just under two weeks ago, Maynard has already started to show a lot of promise for Tech and opening up some options on the special teams. He came through the Prokick Australia program, which has instructed five consecutive Ray Guy Award winners and 12 All-Americans. The NICK MADONIA | SR. | K program’s alums include former Eastern Kentucky punter Keith Wrzuszczak, who was the top punter in the OVC in recent years.

TAKING IT BACK: On the depth chart for returners are running back Andrew Goldsmith and receiver Jeremiah Edwards. The two have had a lot of speed in camp and could provide some highlight reel quality returns for the Golden Eagles. Goldsmith returned four kicks last year for 100 yards, the longest at 31 yards. Edwards, a fresh- man from Hillsboro, Tenn., has had impressive speed and good hands as he looks to make his mark.

OFF THE FIELD

LUKE MAYNARD | R-FR. | P

WILMORE GETS THE TEDDY: Former Golden Eagle linebacker Barry “Butch” Wilmore was named the recipient of the NCAA’s highest honor -- the Theodore Roosevelt Award -- in January. Wilmore played football from 1982 to 1985 at Tech. He then went on to become a decorated combat pilot in the Navy, then went on to become an astronaut, commanding the space shuttle Atlantis and served on missions to the International Space Station. Wilmore is also a member of the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame. He is the first former Tech and Ohio Valley Conference student-athlete to receive the award.

HELPING BUILD THE WALL: During the spring, the Tennessee Tech football team helped erect the visiting Vietnam Wall memorial -- “The Wall That Heals.” Tech coaches and players helped put together the traveling exhibit as people from all over the region visited the scale replica of the Vietnam War Memorial wall standing in Washington, D.C.

what will it take to make Tech a winning program?

“By recruiting and stabilizing our current roster,” Alexan- der said. “We have to recruit. We are going to go all in on recruiting. We’re going to hire a staff of recruiters. To me, we’ve got a great area to recruit to. We host the TSSAA state championship games. That’s what it’s going to take – recruit- ing and doing things right in our program, whether it’s in the weight room, on the field, off the field. We’re going to hire good coaches who will do right by our players and work extremely hard. I’m a big believer that if we’re doing things the right way on and off the field, the wins will take care of themselves. They always have wherever I’ve been.”

On the side of Tucker Stadium, there’s the large banner that reads ‘Champions are made here.’ Alexander is definitely believer in that.

“There is so much truth in that,” Alexander said. “What an awesome thing it is for us to host the TSSAA state champi- onships. YORK TROPHY SCHEDULE This year marks the 12th year of the Sgt. York Championship presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee. The trophy (founded in Sept. 22 Austin Peay at UT Martin, 2 p.m. 2007 by the Nashville Sports Council and OVC) goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four OVC Oct. 6 Tennessee State at Austin Peay, 6 football-playing schools located in the state of Tennessee (Austin p.m. Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin). The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more Oct. 20 Tennessee Tech at Tennessee State, than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in 4:30 p.m. Chief’s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. Oct. 27 Tennessee Tech at Austin Peay, 4 The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted p.m. Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2nd battalion, 328th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), Nov. 10 Tennessee Tech at UT Martin, 2 York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted p.m. to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Nov. 17 UT Martin at Tennessee State, 2 Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return p.m. to the in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. The trophy goes to the team with the best record against the other schools (in case of a tie there will be co-champions and the actual trophy will be retained by the defending champion if they are involved in the tie or if the defending champion is not involved in the tie it will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy).
