St. Mary’s Catholic School Student Code 2020-2021

The St. Mary’s Catholic School is to be worn every day except on special dress days. Students may be refused admittance to class if they come to school out of uniform without a valid excuse. Clean, neat, and attractive are a discerning mark of a St. Mary’s Catholic School student. The uniform ​ code not only includes the items that should be worn, but also the manner in which they are to be ​ ​ worn. The uniform serves to remind each student that, as a Christian, the student is a model for others ​ and is immediately recognizable as a member of the SMS community. Posey’s is the official SMS ​ uniform vendor.

FOR BOYS:

1. Pants Navy pants purchased from Posey’s will be worn for P4-5th grade and khaki pants worn for 6th grade up. Pants should be appropriately sized and must have the appropriate logo to be acceptable. New and old logos will be accepted. ​ ​ Students up to 3rd grade may wear pants with an elastic . P4 students ​ must wear pants with an elastic waist.

2. Navy shorts with appropriate logo for P4-5th grade and khaki shorts for 6th grade up purchased from Posey’s. New and old logos will be accepted. Shorts ​ ​ must not extend below the knee and must touch the of the knee when standing. Students up to 3rd grade may wear shorts with an elastic waist. P4 ​ students must have an elastic waist.

3. Two choices exist for the uniform : light blue oxford long or short sleeve purchased from Posey’s and displaying the approved school logo. New and old ​ logos will be accepted. Shirts must be tucked in and buttoned appropriately as ​ long as the student is on campus.

4. Belts must be solid brown or black with a plain buckle. Belts must be worn with ​ pants/shorts that have belt loops.

5. Socks must be crew or ankle socks (above the ankle bone at the discretion ​ ​ of administration). Must be white, navy, khaki, or black. No-show socks are ​ not permitted.

6. Ties School approved long tie properly worn is required for mass days with official shirt. This applies to Jr High and High School only.

7. Hair Hair must be neat, clean, combed and of the student’s natural hair color. Hair ​ should not extend below the bottom of the collar in the back, below the middle of the ear on the sides, and must be kept out of the face. Afros must not be over ​ three inches. Ponytails, mohawks, mullets, or other exaggerated styles will not be permitted. A design shaved into the hair is not allowed. , wigs, bandannas and sweatbands are not allowed.

8. Facial Hair Boys should be clean-shaven at all times. Sideburns will be tapered and well groomed, not extending below the bottom of the ear. ​ ​ 9. Jewelry Chains and/or bracelets are allowed if worn conservatively. ​

FOR GIRLS:

1. The official St. Mary’s plaid must touch the calf in a kneeling position, ​ and touch the top of the knee in a standing position(this includes front, back, and sides). This measurement applies when the skirt is worn at the student’s natural waist. P4 - 3rd grade students must wear school only. Girls ​ in grades 4 and up must wear the school skirt.

Hair accessories such as barrettes, ribbons, bows, etc. should compliment the and should not stand out.

8. Jewelry Students may wear a and/or bracelets. Jewelry should be modest and appropriate. One small stud or hoop worn on the earlobe is acceptable. ​ Girls up to 3rd grade can only wear a stud earring.

9. Makeup Makeup worn must be modest and appropriate. Students in grades 6-12 are allowed to wear makeup. Face painting, decorations, and glitter makeup is not permissible. Fingernail polish (girls only) should be light and neutral colors. Nothing bold and extravagant. Administration has final say on makeup.

FOR BOYS AND GIRLS:

1. Uniform for 6th grade and up must be a dress shoe that is black, brown or navy. Sperry-type shoes are preferred. -on shoes are not allowed. Laces ​ ​ ​ ​ should be tied and blend with the shoe. All shoes must be worn with socks. , , , and are not permitted. Tennis shoes and athletic shoes are not permitted except during P.E. and are required for P.E. Pre-K - 5th grade may wear tennis shoes. Shoes must be black, white, navy, royal, or gray with minimal accent colors. Neon accents are not acceptable. P4 students must wear slip-on or velcro shoes. No laces are allowed.

2. Plain white short/long sleeve t-shirt or turtleneck shirt may be worn under ​ the student’s shirt/blouse. Neither should be visible beyond the shirtsleeve. Girls may wear a plain white under their school shirt.

3. Outerwear Appropriate outerwear includes: the official St. Mary’s letter , , , pullover crew or hooded sweatshirt, fleece jacket, or all weather . All outerwear must be navy and display the heat sealed school crest. The pullover sweatshirt may display the heat sealed crest or SMS across the front. The fleece and all weather coat must have the embroidered STM logo. Monogramming is allowed on shirts and outerwear on the sleeve hem or cuff but may be no larger than 1/2 inch tall and must be white. Team/Club outerwear ​ ​ may be worn on spirit days only.

4. Spirit Shirt Days Spirit shirt days will be every Friday unless otherwise stated. Elementary and Jr High students must wear the official spirit shirt or spirit sweatshirt sold by the PTO with or appropriate school bottoms. High school students may wear any St. Mary’s spirit/team/club shirt with jeans or appropriate school bottoms. NO LEGGINGS ALLOWED. 6th - 12th grade may wear any tennis shoe on spirit shirt days if wearing a spirit shirt. If in school uniform, appropriate shoes ​ ​ ​ must be worn.

6. Mass Attire No shorts or are to be worn during mass; cardigans, vests and pullover CREW sweatshirts are acceptable. Appropriate ties are required for all Jr High and High School boys and girls to wear at mass.

7. PE Uniform All middle school students will need a PE uniform. High school students who are part of Athletic PE will wear the uniform that their coach requires. Non-athlete PE students are required to wear a PE uniform. PE uniforms are available at Posey’s.

8. Accessories No smart or other devices that connect to the internet are allowed. Perfume and cologne are not to be overbearing. Visible tattoos are not allowed. Backpacks with wheels are not allowed.

9. Student IDs Student ID badges are considered part of the school uniform. ID cards must be visible at all times. IDs must be worn on the SMS lanyard hanging from their neck. Lanyards can be replaced through the PTO. Lost, stolen, altered, damaged, or defaced IDs must be replaced IMMEDIATELY for $20.

1. Athletic Awards Ceremony, NHS Induction, Beta Induction, Junior Ring Ceremony, Homecoming Mass (Presentation of Homecoming Court-only for seniors), baccaularete, and graduation. ● Boys: ○ Button down shirt with a tie (jacket optional) ○ Dress pants ○ Dress shoes with ○ No or jewelry ○ No facial hair ● Girls ○ Dress must be to the top of the knee ○ No strapless, backless, spaghetti straps, one shoulder or rompers ○ Dress shoes - no stilettos ○ Dressy may be worn with the exception of Homecoming Mass, baccaularete, and graduation. 2. Confirmation ● Boys: ○ White ○ Dark tie ○ Dark slacks (navy or black) ○ Brown or black dress belt ○ No facial hair ● Girls ○ Dress must be to the top of the knee ○ No strapless, backless, spaghetti straps, one shoulder or rompers ○ Pearl or white dainty small jewelry ​ ○ Dress shoes - no stilettos 3. Prom ● Boys: ○ Traditional tuxedo ○ Dress shoes with dress socks - No tennis shoes ● Girls ○ Floor length ○ Backless dresses must not dip lower than 2 inches above the natural waist ○ The sides of the body must not be exposed - No cutout dresses ○ No midriffs exposes - No 2-piece dresses

Homecoming Dance ● Boys: ○ Button down shirt and tie (jacket optional) ○ Dress shoes and dress socks ○ No jeans, shorts, polo-style shirts, tennis shoes or any other casual clothing permitted ○ No jewelry ● Girls: ○ Dress no more than 2 inches above the knee ○ Dress shoes ○ Necklines, including V-necks, must be no lower than the top of the bust line ○ The sides of the body must not be exposed - no cutout dresses ○ No midriffs exposed - No 2-piece dresses

**The dress code will be strictly enforced. If students fail to follow the dress code policy for ​ special events, administration will require that they wear school mass attire.
