CSB IAS ACADEMY Contact us: 9966436875 CSB IAS ACADEMY THE RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARDS CANCELLED FOR 2020 The Ramon Magsaysay awards - Also considered as Asia’s Version of Nobel Prize cancelled due to the global pandemic, the only third time the annual awards were disrupted in six decades. The Manila based foundation that confers awards said that it has no choice but to cancel the awards this year ‘with the COVID-19 pandemic practically immobilizing the world’. Earlier the awards were also cancelled due to a financial crisis in 1970 and a disastrous earthquake that his the Phillipines in 1990. The awards are named after Phillipine president who died in 1957. The awardsCSB are announced to honour. “greatness of spirit in selfless service to the peoples of Asia”. The more than 330 awardees So far included many Indians like RK Laxman, P.Sainath, Arun Shourie, Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal. Mother teresa, Vinoba bhave, Verghese Kuricn, Jayaprakash Narayan, Rajendra Singh, Shantha Sinha. The Ramon Magsaysay Award foundation awards Asia individuals achieving excellence in their respective fields and have been known to help others generously without anticipating public recognition. The awards were traditionallyIAS given ACADEMY in five categories : (i) government service (ii) public service (iii) community leadership, Journalism literature and (iv) creative communication arts peace and (v) international understanding. The Magsaysay award celebrates the memory and leadership of the towering personality ‘Ramon Magsasay’ and is given every year to individuals (or) organisations in Asia who manifest the same selfless service and transformative influence. 22 Mass Communication THE Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, through the mass communication media consisting of radio, television, films, press and print publications, advertising and traditional modes of communication such as dance and drama, plays an effective role in helping people to have access to free flow of information. The Ministry is involved in catering to the entertainment needs of various age groups and focusing attention of the people on issues of national integrity, environmental protection, health care and family welfare, eradication of illiteracy and issues relating to women, children, minority and other disadvantaged sections of the society. The Ministry is divided into four wings i.e., the Information Wing, the Broadcasting Wing, the Films Wing and the Integrated Finance Wing. The Ministry functions through its 21 media units/ attached and subordinate offices, autonomous bodies and PSUs. The Information Wing handles policy matters of the print and press media and publicity requirements of the Government. This Wing also looks after the general administration of the Ministry. The Broadcasting Wing handles matters relating to the electronic media and the regulation of the content of private TV channels as well as the programme matters of All India Radio and Doordarshan and operation of cable television and community radio, etc. Electronic Media Monitoring Centre (EMMC), which is a subordinate office, functions under the administrative control of this Division. The Film Wing handles matters relating to the film sector. It is involved in the production and distribution of documentary films, development and promotional activities relating to the film industry including training, organization of film festivals, import and export regulations, etc.

The movement was, on its face, unusual: its figurehead, the 75-year- old Gandhian, Anna Hazare, was apparently rallying urban, middle-class professionals and youth in great numbers—a group otherwise notorious for its political apathy. The scale of the protests, of the scandals spurring them, and the intensity of media attention generated nothing short of a spectacle: the sense, if not the reality, of a united India Against Corruption. Against this background, we ask: what shared imagination of cor- ruption and political dysfunction, and what political ends are projected in the Lokpal protests? What are the class practices gathered under the ‘‘middle-class’’ rubric, and how do these characterize the unusual politics of summer 2011? Wholly permeated by routine habits of consumption, we argue that the Lokpal protests are fundamentally structured by the impulse to remake social relations in the image of products and ‘‘India’’ itself into a trusted brand.
