Resolution Relating to RESOLUTION________ Sponsor(s): Councilors Wright, Mason, Pine VERMONT LAKE MONSTERS Introduced: ____________________ Referred to: ____________________ ______________________________ Action: ________________________ Date: __________________________ Signed by Mayor: ________________ CITY OF BURLINGTON In the year Two Thousand Twenty ………………………………………………………………………… Resolved by the City Council of the City of Burlington, as follows: 1 That WHEREAS, Major League Baseball (MLB) is currently considering a plan that would effectively 2 eliminate 42 minor league franchises across the country after the 2020 season; and 3 WHEREAS, our Vermont Lake Monsters are one of the teams that would likely face elimination if this 4 plan is implemented by MLB; and 5 WHEREAS, the Vermont Lake Monsters provide the opportunity for many young baseball fans in 6 Burlington, as well as the region and the state, to see professional baseball, creating many new fans of 7 America’s pastime; and 8 WHEREAS, the Lake Monsters, in addition to professional baseball, provide great and affordable 9 entertainment to families across the region, and they are a family-friendly franchise; and 10 WHEREAS, having the Lake Monsters in Burlington, Vermont has a positive effect on our economy 11 in a variety of ways; and 12 WHEREAS, having professional minor league baseball in Burlington Vermont is good for baseball 13 and for building a stronger sense of community just as it is in communities across the country; and 14 WHEREAS, eliminating these 42 minor league teams, including our Vermont Lake Monsters, would 15 be a short-sighted decision by MLB, would hurt our communities’ economies, and would deprive fans of all 16 ages from enjoying a beautiful night of baseball on a warm summer night; and 17 WHEREAS, the Mayor has signed on to the Mayors’ Task Force to Save Minor League Baseball; 18 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Burlington City Council urges Major League 19 Baseball to abandon this ill-conceived plan which will do harm to our community and will in fact be bad for 20 the game of baseball; and 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that if MLB does not abandon this plan, we encourage our 22 Congressional delegation as well as all of Congress to take whatever steps necessary to discourage 23 implementation of this plan including potentially revisiting Major League Baseball’s anti-trust exemption; and 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution shall be sent to the Commissioner of 25 Major League Baseball, the Vermont Congressional delegation, and the Vermont Lake Monsters. 26 27 lb/JSJ/Resolutions 2020/City Council - Vermont Lake Monsters 2/5/20 .
