Alan LeForce enters his eighth season as head women’s basketball coach at Coastal Carolina University and has made his mark as one of the most respected, experienced and successful coaches in the Big South Conference. From a second-place Big South finish in his inaugural year at CCU to a magical run in the BSC tournament in 2001-02 to a team that pulled off another tourna- ment upset in 2003-04, the 1998-99 Big South Coach of the Year has been a driving force in developing a program that is ready to take the next step. LeForce has 45 years of coaching experience and has an overall record of 338-279 as a college head coach, including an 98-99 record at the helm of the Lady Chanticleers. We’re going to be 2004-05 Coastal Women’s Basketball 7 Assistant Coaches Dee Pennix - 2nd Year High Point ’99 Dee Pennix is in her second season on the women’s basketball staff at Coastal Carolina. Her duties include all aspects of coaching and serv- ing as the recruiting coordinator for the 2004-05 season. Pennix was instrumental in this past season’s six-player recruiting class. Pennix joined the Lady Chanticleers after serving four years as an assistant coach at High Point University. During her tenure at High Point, she helped the Panthers improve their record from 6-22 in 1999-2000 to an 18-12 mark in 2002-03, including advancing to the Big South Confer- ence Tournament championship game against Liberty. She also has been a collegiate camp clinician at Wake Forest University, Appalachian State University, High Point and Coastal Carolina during her playing and coach- ing career. Pennix was a four-year letterwinner at High Point from 1995-99, earn- ing her bachelor’s degree in physical education and recreation in 1999. In her career, she led the Panthers to a pair of Carolina-Virginia Athletic Conference Tournament titles and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Eastern Regional’s Elite Eight in 1996. She served as team captain during her senior season in 1999, earning the team’s Most Valuable Player award. She was named the league’s Rookie of the Year in the league in 1995 and honored on the All-Tournament squad in 1995 and 1996. She holds the school record for most three pointers in a game, set during the 1996 season.

Mark Kost - 2nd Year Notre Dame ’95

Mark Kost is in his second season as an assistant coach on the women’s basketball staff. His duties include all aspects of coaching, including game preparation and off-campus recruiting. Kost came to the women’s staff after serving on Coastal’s men’s basketball coaching staff during the 2002-03 season. Kost arrived at Coastal after spending two seasons as a varsity assistant coach at St. Joseph’s High School in South Bend, Ind. At St. Joseph’s, Kost was involved with many aspects of the program, includ- ing on-court coaching, player development and scouting. While residing in South Bend, Kost also worked with the University of Notre Dame football and men’s basketball offices as an office con- tractor. As a contractor, he helped implement the use of the Internet in recruiting with both programs. His connection to Coastal developed there, as he worked with former Chanticleer men’s assistant coach Lewis Preston. Kost also has worked as a camp clinician at Notre Dame and the University of Michigan. Kost is a 1995 graduate of Notre Dame with a B.A. in business administration.

Frank Moorhead starts his third season as an assistant on the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball staff. Before joining the Coastal Carolina staff, Moorhead spent 20 years in Myrtle Beach area coach- ing boys and girls high school basketball. Moorhead came to Coastal Carolina after serving the 2001-02 season as assistant varsity boys basketball coach at North Myrtle Beach High School. Prior to his stint at North Myrtle Beach, Moorhead was the head boys coach at Carolina Forest High School, where he led the team to a 14-5 record for the 1997-98 season. Moorhead began his coaching career at North Myrtle Beach H.S., as the head girl’s basketball coach in 1980. In 17 years as the head coach of the Lady Chiefs, he compiled a record of 360-80 as well as being named conference Coach of the Year eight times and The Sun News Coach of the Year seven times. His teams were conference champions 10 times and also made the state playoffs 13 of 17 years. His 1988 team won the state championship and in 1990 North Myrtle Beach finished second in the state. Moorhead is married to Dr. June Moorhead, principal at Myrtle Beach Primary School.

Whitney Shearer - 1st Year Coastal Carolina ’04

Whitney Shearer joins the women’s basketball staff at Coastal as a student assistant following her successful four-year career with the Lady Chanticleers. During her time at Coastal, Shearer scored 741 points, had 304 re- bounds and dished off 242 as- sists. She is in the top-10 all time in both assists and steals (159). She averaged 5.1 points and 2.1 rebounds her senior season in helping Coastal to an upset of High Point in the Big South Quarterfinals and earning a home game in the semifinal round. Shearer is a two-time Big South All-Academic Team mem- ber who is on pace to graduate with a degree in elementary edu- cation in December.
