Glenn, Jr. and the life of his wife, Anna “Annie” Castor Glenn. The materials date from 1896 to 2016, though the bulk of the materials date from 1959 to 1998. Included in the Audiovisual Collection are materials from the Glenn and Castor families, from John Glenn’s childhood in New Concord, Ohio, from Glenn’s military, space, and corporate careers, and from Glenn’s political career as a United States Senator from Ohio. Approximately one-third of the sub-group consists of photographs ranging from family snapshots to photographs taken by various official photographers for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the United States Senate. Other types of visual materials in the collection include original works of art, limited edition prints, cartoons, portraits, maps, and motion pictures in both film and video format. Sound recordings contained within the collection include cassette and reel-to-reel tapes, phonographic recordings, and compact disks. The remainder of the collection consists of certificates and awards given to John and Annie Glenn and various types of ephemera collected by them. Access: The Audiovisual Collection Sub-Group is open to public research under the rules and regulations of The Ohio State University. Copyrights: John and Anna Glenn have dedicated such copyrights as they possess in the Audiovisual Collection Sub-Group to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and the publisher. Arrangement: The arrangement of the materials within the Audiovisual Collection Sub-Group consists of thirteen series – Audio Tapes; Cartoons; Certificates; Compact Disks; Ephemera; Maps; Motion Picture Films; Original Art Works; Phonographic Recordings; Photographs; Portraits; Prints; and Video Tapes. Processing Note: Jeffrey W. Thomas, with staff members, Michelle Drobik and Julie Petersen, processed and arranged the Audiovisual Collection Sub-Group from 1999 to 2006. Additional materials were added to the collection from 2010 to 2017. Most of the items housed within the Audiovisual Collection arrived at The Ohio State University already separated by type of material. The culling performed for preservation purposes during the processing of the Senate Papers and the Non-Senate Papers Sub-Groups of the John Glenn Archives added further items, especially photographs, to the collection. With the exception of the photographs, the collection’s box and folder inventory provides a listing on the item level of all the materials within the collection. Many of the series within the collection contain materials too large to fit within a standard size archival box. Workers processing these oversized materials sorted them first by type into their respective series, then by size for storage in suitable boxes. In addition, the collection contains more than three hundred framed items, each entered individually in the inventory under box numbers in the 900s. Listed at the end of the box and folder inventory for each series, when appropriate, are the items housed within the oversized boxes attached to the series, and the framed items included with that series. 3 Scope and Content Note Series 1: Audio Tapes Boxes 1 - 12 The Audio Tapes Series consists of 511 sound recordings dating from 1959 to 1998, though most tapes date from the 1980s and 1990s. Formats within the series include cassette tapes, micro- cassette tapes, and reel-to-reel tapes ranging from three to seven inches in diameter. The arrangement of the recordings within the series is first by format, then by the sub-series of Senate, NASA, Family, and Annie Glenn. Arrangement of the tapes within each sub-series is in chronological order. Most of the 286 sound recordings on cassette tape date from John Glenn’s career in the U.S. Senate. The tapes contain recordings of interviews, press conferences, and speeches, along with recordings dating from 1985 to 1988 of Glenn’s “Dateline Washington” radio program. Also included is a series of recordings from the Great Lakes Washington Roundtables on Pollution Prevention held between April and December 1994. The Great Lakes Task Force, a bipartisan coalition co-chaired by Senator Glenn of U.S. Senators from the states bordering the Great Lakes, sponsored these roundtables. With just a few exceptions, the 122 micro-cassettes in the series date from Glenn’s campaign for the Democratic Party’s nomination in the 1984 presidential election. Dating from 1982 to 1984, the recordings consist of speeches, interviews, and press conferences. Other micro-cassettes contain recordings from the late 1980s of various political speeches and statements on such policy issues as arms control, “Star Wars,” and pollution. Of note are four micro-cassettes containing recordings from the November 1978 CODEL Ribicoff trip to London and the Soviet Union in which Senator Glenn participated. The NASA sub-series of cassette recordings includes tapes containing the air/ground communications during the Friendship 7 space flight on February 20, 1962, and Glenn’s interviews and statements on significant anniversaries of the event. Other recordings date from Glenn’s return to space in 1998 as a crewmember aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery Mission STS-95. These tapes include training sessions and various media interviews. Most of the 103 reel-to-reel tape recordings in the series pertain to Glenn’s space flight aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. The recordings include multiple tape sets of the space flight’s air/ground communications, and a set of tapes from the New York City ticker-tape parade held in honor of Glenn on March 1, 1962. Also included are recordings of a few radio programs produced in tribute to the space flight. The series contains recordings of various poetry, music, and messages sent to Glenn by school children and the general public. Other tapes contain recordings of the statements and interviews made by Glenn following his space flight, including his speech to a special joint session of Congress. Also of note are recordings of the speeches he and Soviet cosmonaut Gherman S. Titov delivered at the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) meeting in May 1962, and recordings of the radio broadcasts from the goodwill tour of Europe Glenn made for NASA in 1965. 4 Reel-to-reel recordings from John Glenn’s years in the U.S. Senate consist chiefly of radio spots from his 1970 through 1980 election campaigns, and a few interviews about his consideration as the Democratic Party’s vice-presidential nominee in the 1976 presidential election. Also included is a recording of the statements made by Annie Glenn and Rene Carpenter at an event during Glenn’s 1964 senate campaign. The series also contains several recordings of speeches made by Annie Glenn, including her first public speech given on September 15, 1979 at the Canton (Ohio) Women’s Club. Included in the series under the family sub-series is a recording of the “Layman Sunday” sermon John Glenn delivered in 1959 to the congregation of the Little Falls Presbyterian Church in Arlington, Virginia. Also in the family sub-series are five cassette tapes recorded by Lyn Glenn during her trip in 1985 to various refugee camps in Southeast Asia. Series 2: Cartoons Box 13; 24 framed items The Cartoons Series contains fifty-seven political cartoons, dating from 1959 to 2016, pertaining to John Glenn’s two assignments to NASA and to his career in the U.S. Senate. Most of the cartoons within the series are original works of art inscribed to Glenn and signed by the cartoonist. Included in the series are works by such notable cartoonists as Jim Borgman, Mike Peters, Jeff Stahler, and Gary Trudeau. Topics for the Senate cartoons include most of Glenn’s senate campaigns and his 1984 presidential campaign. Other Senate cartoons pertain to the cleanup of U.S. Department of Energy nuclear sites, Congressional legislation on regulatory reform in 1995, and Glenn’s retirement from the U.S. Senate. The NASA cartoons contain a few items satirizing NASA during the Project Mercury era and several cartoons
