Shogan Deputy Director and Senior Specialist November 26, 2012 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL30261 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Women in the United States Congress: 1917-2012 Summary Ninety-four women currently serve in the 112th Congress: 77 in the House (53 Democrats and 24 Republicans) and 17 in the Senate (12 Democrats and 5 Republicans). Ninety-two women were initially sworn in to the 112th Congress, two women Democratic House Members have since resigned, and four others have been elected. This number (94) is lower than the record number of 95 women who were initially elected to the 111th Congress. The first woman elected to Congress was Representative Jeannette Rankin (R-MT, 1917-1919, 1941-1943). The first woman to serve in the Senate was Rebecca Latimer Felton (D-GA). She was appointed in 1922 and served for only one day. A total of 278 women have served in Congress, 178 Democrats and 100 Republicans. Of these women, 239 (153 Democrats, 86 Republicans) have served only in the House of Representatives; 31 (19 Democrats, 12 Republicans) have served only in the Senate; and 8 (6 Democrats, 2 Republicans) have served in both houses. These figures include one non-voting Delegate each from Guam, Hawaii, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Currently serving Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) holds the record for length of service by a woman in Congress with 35 years (10 of which were spent in the House).

Vanik, House of Representatives Subject:ERealinement of the Cleveland Defense Contract Administration Service Region](LCD-80-24) You requested that we review the Defense Logistics Agency's decision to merge the Defense Contract Administra- /- tion Service's Cleveland regional office into the Chicago -/regional office. Recent events have eliminated Chicago as a potential location, and as Admiral E. M. Kocher, Assistant Director, Defense Logistics Agency, advised you in his October 16, 1979, letter, the Agency has now decided to locate the consolidated office in Cleveland. The merger of these two offices is part of an overall Department of Defense plan. By reducing the number of Defense Contract Administration Service's regions from nine to five, Defense will reduce overhead and administrative costs and attain a more efficient support structure. The Agency pro- jected that this consolidation could save about $40 million over 5 years, about $18 million attributable to the Cleveland- Chicago consolidation. The Agency also projected that if the consolidated office was located in Chicago, about $1 million more could be saved. On October 11, 1979, our review team provided a briefing on the progress of our work. Our preliminary analysis showed that Chicago was economically more advantageous than Cleveland. However, the estimates and projections contained so many judg- ments and assumptions that a decision could not be based unequivocally on economic factors.

    Vol. 1 Issue 1 Spring 2016 Published by the Ohio State Bar Association Animal Law Committee Animal Law News An elephant’s journey: How the laws and regulations affecting zoos have evolved leading to the modern zoo If we look back 60 years, which is the average lifespan of an African Elephant, we can witness the significant changes which have occurred in the approach to animal welfare at zoos. There are numerous regulations with which zoos must comply; however, more importantly, rigorous industry accreditation standards have been birthed, driving many zoos in a “race to the top” for excellence in animal care. Our country’s first approach to regulating zoos focused on the control of disease. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Animal Quarantine Laws1 and the Lacey Act2 empowered the president and the Department of the Interior, respectively, to regulate the importation of animals that would threaten domestic animals or humans from disease or other harmful effects. It honors the important and the insig­ nificant; it marks both the efforts of years and the levities of seconds. As vfe grow older, each of us will derive much pleasure from the mem­ ories of our past lives — our families, our friends, our school, our community, and all the other innumerable compo­ nents of background and environment which make up our youth. The good times and the difficult times, the victories and the defeats, the hopes and the disillusionments — all will be represented. But the most wonderful element of memory consists in the fact that the happiness, the gaiety, and the triumphs remain in our minds as being the more prevalent. The darker shad­ ows are passed aside and the sparkling surfaces are made yet more brilliant by the strokes of time. Our youth in Arlington has been rich in memories — most of which we are not to realize and fully enjoy for some time to come.

    Ohio General Election Guide General Election: November 3, 2020 Summary of Races: The biggest story in Statehouse races as we approach Election Day is the recent charges that have been brought against Larry Householder. The criminal complaint brought against him alleges he took part in a $61 million racketeering scheme. As the case pends in federal court, many of the campaign funds that the House Republican Caucus rely on for financial support have been frozen and likely will not be able to be accessed until after the election. In what is already a tough cycle because of the presidential election, having the financial resources compromised puts many of the races in question. Having competed against a super majority for several years and seeing the presidential election as a boon for their base, the House Democrats were already looking to pick up quite a few seats. With the new financial woes that the Republicans could face, Democrats see this election as their chance to bring better balance to the party scale in the People’s Chamber. This impact could bleed into the Senate races as well. It is also worth noting that although the House has voted Larry Householder out of the Speaker position, he remains a Representative and will also still appear on the ballot in his district. However, since the news of the criminal charges broke, four individuals have declared candidacies against him. Since the petition deadline had passed by the time of this arrest, all four opponents will be write-in candidates. At a minimum, there will be at least 19 new members of the House and five new members of the Senate.
