PROPOSAL INFORMATION

1. Name of host Certified Local Government City of Columbia, MO Historic Preservation Commission.

2. Name of title of primary contact who will be responsible for meeting arrangements Rachel Bacon, AICP, Planner with assistance from the City’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau staff: Beth Mead, CMP, Tourism Marketing Manager and Amy DeSalme, Convention Sales Manager.

3. Proposed hotel or hotels, include the # of single and double occupancy rooms available (Pricing can be negotiated later, but approximate room cost would be helpful) The first proposed hotel is the which is located on the historic downtown 8th Street/Avenue of the Columns. The Tiger Hotel has recently been restored as a boutique hotel and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tiger hotel has 62 rooms and suites available. The conference rate for single/double/suite rooms is $119 per night, regardless of occupancy (single, double, or suite). A secondary downtown boutique hotel, the Broadway by Doubletree, will be complete by spring of 2013 (non-historic). Prices are not yet available. This hotel is within walking distance of the Tiger Hotel. There are also five suites available downtown on the historic Stephens College Campus (between $60 and $90 per night) and historic bed and breakfasts in the near West Broadway, Old Southwest and East Campus Historic Districts. Other nearby hotels will offer competitive rates as well, but will not be historic or within walking distance of the proposed conference facilities. The City of Columbia Convention and Visitor’s Bureau will put out a RFP to historic and nearby hotels to ensure the best rates and guest experience. The central location of Columbia makes it highly accessible for many Missouri preservation professionals.

4. Distance from major airport Downtown Columbia is 13 miles from the Columbia Regional Airport, 111 miles from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, and 148 miles from the Kansas City International Airport. The central location of the City of Columbia (within the state) on Interstate 70 makes driving a viable option as well. a. Type of transportation available from airport Affordable shuttle service ($46 each way) is available from both the St. Louis and Kansas City airports.

Cabs may be booked at set rates from the Columbia Regional Airport (there is no shuttle/bus service at this time). It is possible to arrange for private shuttle service from the Columbia airport if needed.

5. Description and cost of potential meeting space Downtown Columbia has many excellent meeting space options. The availability and flexibility of various spaces ensures conference attendees will enjoy comfortable and desirable facilities. In addition to the Tiger Hotel, recommended meeting locations include space at one of the three historic campuses flanking the downtown (Columbia College to the north, Stephens College to the east, and the University of Missouri to the south); conference events could also potentially be held in either the historic Missouri Theatre and Hall Theatre (the Blue Note) on Ninth Street. Because there are many appropriate (and historic options), meeting space will be chosen by price and amenities. The University of Missouri, Stephens College and Columbia College all has meeting space for 200+ and rooms ranging in size from classroom, auditorium and ballroom. Additionally, these venues have on-site AV equipment and events/technology support staff. The historic (National Register) Memorial Union on the University of Missouri campus’ meeting spaces run between $25 and $75 for set-up fees. More information may be found on the web at: http://unions.missouri.edu/set-up-info The historic (National Register) Lela Raney Wood Hall Kimball ballroom rents for $1600 per day and the historic Senior Hall for $800 per day without a conference bulk rate discount. More information about business space at Stephens College is on the web at: http://www.stephens.edu/services/events/business/#other Information about meeting space at Columbia College (including Dulany Hall in St. Clair Hall) may be viewed at: http://web.ccis.edu/Offices/CampusLife/ResidentialLife/reservations.aspx Potential meeting spaces located in the Tiger Hotel will be given a competitive conference rate. The ballroom space retails for $600 per day without the discount. Additional space is available in the hotel, including the lobby, mezzanine, Black and Gold room and Vault lounge. As host of the True/False Film Festival, Roots n’ Blues and BBQ Festival, and numerous MU football fans, Historic Downtown Columbia can accommodate and welcome a variety of visitors.

6. Historic places in area for local tour The Guitar Mansion, the Maplewood House and Boone County Historical Society historic attractions (affectionately described as a historic property petting zoo), and downtown and collegiate properties would make excellent tours for conference guests. The HPC has also developed a walking tour for historic collegiate properties which may also be used as either an organized or self-guided tour, and the downtown CID (“The District”) has a downtown walking tour.

If the conference is held in October, the HPC has developed a very popular haunted historic property tour which could accompany a twilight social event (press on this tour may be viewed at: http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2010/oct/24/history- haunts/). A bicycle tour of downtown historic neighborhood districts (East Campus, West Broadway and Old Southwest) could also be arranged for conference attendees as a “mobile” or “wheeled” workshop. Columbia is a bicycle-friendly community, and this would allow for a unique on-the-ground experience for attendees.

7. Other attractions in area Other attractions near to Columbia for historic-minded visitors include the historic village of (15 miles away- excellent heritage tourism examples; has shops, a winery and is located on the MKT), Booneville, Blackwater, and Hermann, MO and other nearby villages and towns with historic main streets and amenities. The University of Missouri, Stephens College and Columbia College campuses are also lovely in the fall.

8. Key accomplishments host organization would want to showcase The Interactive Historic Map project and the Economic Impact of Historic Preservation in Columbia, MO (underway) are both Historic Preservation Fund supported projects which the HPC would like to showcase. Additional local projects by private developers, such as the revitalization of the mixed-use Berry Building and the North Village Arts District, and the rehabilitation of the Stephens College President’s Residence (to only name a few), will be a great way to showcase adaptive reuse and historic rehabilitation in Columbia. Additionally, the HPC would enjoy hosting on the many tours they have developed over the past few years (see question #6).

9. Possible sponsors for selected events and activities (Please indicate if any have made actual commitments.) The City of Columbia Historic Preservation Commission, the Boone County and State Historical Society are all likely sponsors for the conference. Downtown restaurants and businesses may also wish to showcase their historic features and host social events and/or contribute as sponsors, and Columbia has an active historically-minded development community which may want to provide sponsorship as a form of advertisement. Active neighborhood associations may also want to host events, such as walking or biking tours. The University of Missouri Architectural Studies program is a source for student volunteers. No potential sponsors have been approached at this time. The HPC will commit either financial or in-kind contributions to be determined at a later date.
