A Listening Guide for The Indispensable Composers by Anthony Tommasini 1 The Indispensable Composers: A Personal Guide Anthony Tommasini A listening guide INTRODUCTION: The Greatness Complex Bach, Mass in B Minor I: Kyrie I begin the book with my recollection of being about thirteen and putting on a recording of Bach’s Mass in B Minor for the first time. I remember being immediately struck by the austere intensity of the opening choral singing of the word “Kyrie.” But I also remember feeling surprised by a melodic/harmonic shift in the opening moments that didn’t do what I thought it would. I guess I was already a musician wanting to know more, to know why the music was the way it was. Here’s the grave, stirring performance of the Kyrie from the 1952 recording I listened to, with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. Though, as I grew to realize, it’s a very old-school approach to Bach. Herbert von Karajan, conductor; Vienna Philharmonic (12:17) Today I much prefer more vibrant and transparent accounts, like this great performance from Philippe Herreweghe’s 1996 recording with the chorus and orchestra of the Collegium Vocale, which is almost three minutes shorter. Philippe Herreweghe, conductor; Collegium Vocale Gent (9:29) Grieg, “Shepherd Boy” Arthur Rubinstein, piano Album: “Rubinstein Plays Grieg” (3:26) As a child I loved “Rubinstein Plays Grieg,” an album featuring the great pianist Arthur Rubinstein playing piano works by Grieg, including several selections from the composer’s volumes of short, imaginative “Lyrical Pieces.” My favorite was “The Shepherd Boy,” a wistful piece with an intense middle section. -

NORTHERN STARS MUSIC FROM THE NORDIC AND BALTIC REGIONS NAXOS • MARCO POLO • ONDINE • PROPRIUS • SWEDISH SOCIETY • DACAPO Northern Stars Often inspired by folk tradition, nature, landscape and a potent spirit of independence, the music of Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltic states is distinctive and varied, with each country’s music influenced by its neighbours, yet shaped and coloured by its individual heritage. Traveling composers such as Sweden’s Joseph Kraus introduced 18th and early 19th century classical trends from Germany and Italy, but with national identity gaining increasing importance as Romantic ideals took hold, influential and distinctive creative lines were soon established. The muscular strength of Carl Nielsen’s symphonies grew out of the Danish nationalist vigor shown by Friedrich Kuhlau and Niels Gade, extending to names such as Per Nørgård today. Gade was a teacher of Edvard Grieg, who owes his position as Norway’s leading composer, at least in part, to the country’s traditional folk music and the poignant lyricism of the Hardanger fiddle. The music of Finland is dominated by the rugged symphonies of Jean Sibelius, and his Finlandia ensured his status as an enduring national symbol. Sibelius successfully combined the lessons of Viennese romanticism with a strong Nordic character, and this pragmatic approach has generated numerous contemporary giants such as Aus Sallinen, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kalevi Aho and Kaija Saariaho. Turbulent history in the Baltic States partially explains a conspicuous individualism amongst the region’s composers, few more so than with Arvo Pärt, whose work distils the strong Estonian vocal tradition into music of striking intensity and crystalline beauty. -

Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire by Peter Hurd; reorganized and amended by Holger Hoos, editor-in-chief since 2020 version 1.2 (21 March 2021) This collection is based on the catalogue of musical works requiring heckelphone or bass oboe instrumen- tation assembled by Peter Hurd beginning in 1998. For this new edition, the original version of the repertoire list has been edited for accuracy, completeness and consistency, and it has been extended with a number of newly discovered pieces. Some entries could not (yet) be rigorously verified for accuracy; these were included nonetheless, to provide leads for future investigation, but are marked clearly. Pieces were selected for inclusion based solely on the use of heckelphone, bass oboe or lupophone, without any attempt at assessing their artistic merit. Arrangements of pieces not originally intended for these instruments were included when there was clear evidence that they had found a significant audience. Philippe Herreweghe wurde in Gent geboren und kombinierte dort sein Universitätsstudium mit einer musikalischen Ausbildung am Konservatorium. Zur selben Zeit begann er zu dirigieren und gründete 1970 das Collegium Vocale Gent. Nikolaus Harnoncourt und Gustav Leonhardt bemerkten seine außergewöhnliche Vorgehensweise und luden ihn ein, an der Aufnahme sämtlicher Bach-Kantaten mitzuarbeiten. Schon bald wurde Herreweghes lebendiger, authentischer und rhetorischer Ansatz der Barockmusik gelobt, und 1977 gründete er in Paris das Ensemble La Chapelle Royale, mit dem er Musik des französischen Goldenen Zeitalters zur Aufführung brachte. Von 1982 bis 2002 war er Künstlerischer Leiter der Académies Musicales de Saintes. Zu dieser Zeit gründete er verschiedene Ensembles, mit denen er eine adäquate und gründliche Lesart eines Repertoires von der Renaissance bis zu zeitgenössischer Musik zu geben wusste. So war das Ensemble Vocal Européen auf Renaissancepolyphonie spezialisiert und das 1991 gegründete Orchestre des Champs-Élysées zur Interpretation des romantischen und vorromantischen Repertoires auf Originalinstrumenten. Immer auf der Suche nach musikalischen Herausforderungen beschäftigt sich Philippe Herreweghe seit einiger Zeit sehr aktiv mit dem großen symphonischen Repertoire von Beethoven bis Gustav Mahler. Seit 1997 ist er Hauptdirigent der Königlichen Philharmonie von Flandern. Außerdem ist er gefragter Gastdirigent bei Orchestern wie dem Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, dem Gewandhausorchester Leipzig oder dem Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Mit all seinen Ensembles erschuf Philippe Herreweghe im Laufe der Jahre bei den Labels Harmonia Mundi France, Virgin Classics und Pentatone eine umfangreiche Diskographie von mehr als hundert Aufnahmen. 1990 wählte ihn die europäische Musikpresse zur »Musikpersönlichkeit des Jahres«. Zu seinen weiteren Auszeichnungen zählen unter anderem der Titel eines »Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur« sowie die Bach-Medaille der Stadt Leipzig für seine außergewöhnlichen Verdienste als Bach-Interpret. -
