1 the PSALMS' GREATEST HITS 7) Wonder Psalm 8 / Palm 19: 1-6 Rev
THE PSALMS’ GREATEST HITS 7) Wonder Psalm 8 / Palm 19: 1-6 Rev. Ron Dunn August 28, 2016 Over the past six weeks, we have considered some of the Psalms’ greatest hits as we have touched upon the themes of God’s absence and presence, upon our need for confession and grace, upon the importance of trust and joy. Not only have we considered the written texts of various Psalms that speak to the basic reality of our human condition, but we have paired them with the selected musical expressions of Bono, Van Morrison, the Pretenders, Leonard Cohen and Farrell. From a preaching standpoint, it has been fun to think about the linkage that many of these contemporary songs have with these ancient texts. Though they may express themselves with different words, the hunger and the hope that lies behind them is often much the same. This morning, our series concludes on an appropriate note—the note of wonder. I say, “appropriate,” because, if you look closely, you will find that the thread of wonder is woven throughout the tapestry of the entire Book of Psalms. Even in Psalms of lament and despair, we often discover that there is, at least, a passing reference to the Psalmist’s sense of wonder over the beauty and goodness of God. Even the pain and suffering of the current struggle cannot keep the writer from affirming his or her sense of wonder over the greatness of God and God’s creation. Our two selected Psalms of the morning, however, are not Psalms of lament, but just the opposite. -

Encore Songlist
west coast music Encore Please find attached the Encore Band song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, F/D Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio of the song(s). In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. Clients are not obligated to submit a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and/or avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (asking the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests from the band’s songlist. Please feel free to call us at the office should you have any questions. – West Coast Music SONGLIST: At Last – Etta James 1,2,3,4 – Plain White T’s Baby Got Back – Sir Mix A Lot 24K Magic – Bruno Mars Back at One – Boyz II Men A Thousand Years – Christina Bad Day – Daniel Powter Perri Ballad Of John & Yoko Ain’t too Proud to Beg – Bamboleo – Gipsy Kings Temptations Bang my Head – David Guetta/Sia Adventure of a Lifetime – Beast of Burden – Rolling Stones Coldplay Beautiful Day – U2 After All – Peter Cetera/Cher -

An Abstract of the Thesis Of
1 INTRODUCTION The end of the Cold War radically realigned global politics and led to a renewed interest in transnational civil society. The new civil society that helped bring down the Soviet Empire has been considered a major enabling element for worldwide democratization. Simultaneously, social movements addressing issues such as the environment and human rights globalized and increased their prominence within civil society. Leading such movements were inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), like the United Nations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), like Amnesty International and Greenpeace. Collectively known as international organizations (IOs), the reorganized worldwide society created an atmosphere where such IOs could proliferate and flourish, and become a significant factor in the post-Cold War world. While IGOs are quite powerful, NGOs have achieved a dramatic impact working as non-state players in international society. Current scholars of international relations have begun to consider the implications of traditionally non-political actors advocating political and social causes. However, much of that work has focused on NGOs and their interactions with each other, the governments of nation-states and IGOs. Keck and Sikkink (1998) evaluate the prominence of NGOs and the transnational networks that such organizations form to frame issue debates and establish them on agendas of international concern. However, another important piece of the puzzle for NGOs to successfully promote a political or social agenda is the role played by individual non- state actors, and not just non-state organizations. Non-state actors often have a unique ability to impact an audience that may not be affected by NGOs, especially when these 2 non-state individuals are celebrities. -
What Were the Forces That Led to the Rise of New Wave?
Are We Not New Wave? Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s Theo Cateforis http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=152565 The University of Michigan Press, 2011 Q&A with Theo Cateforis, author of Are We Not New Wave? Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s New wave emerged at the turn of the 1980s as a pop music movement cast in the image of punk rock's sneering demeanor, yet rendered more accessible and sophisticated. Artists such as the Cars, Devo, the Talking Heads, and the Human League leapt into the Top 40 with a novel sound that broke with the staid rock clichés of the 1970s and pointed the way to a more modern pop style. In Are We Not New Wave? Theo Cateforis provides the first musical and cultural history of the new wave movement, charting its rise out of mid- 1970s punk to its ubiquitous early 1980s MTV presence and downfall in the mid-1980s. The book also explores the meanings behind the music's distinctive traits—its characteristic whiteness and nervousness; its playful irony, electronic melodies, and crossover experimentations. Cateforis traces new wave's modern sensibilities back to the space-age consumer culture of the late 1950s/early 1960s. Theo Cateforis is Assistant Professor of Music History and Cultures in the Fine Arts Department at Syracuse University. His research is in the areas of American Music, Popular Music Studies, and Twentieth-Century Art Music. He was editor of the anthology The Rock History Reader. The University of Michigan Press: What were the forces that led to the rise of new wave? Theo Cateforis: New wave initially circulated as a synonym for the punk rock movement that emerged in the mid-1970s. -

Mazzy Star's first album since 1996's Among My Swan, 2013's Seasons of Your Day reunites guitarist David Roback and singer Hope Sandoval for a set of hazy, psychedelic songs that bring an unexpected country influence to their familiar dreamy sound. Having broken through with the dream pop anthem "Fade Into You" off 1993's So Tonight That I Might See, Mazzy Star became the poster children for a specific brand of atmospheric, melancholic pop that combined the fairy-like qualities of '60s folk, the lo-fi melodicism of the Velvet Underground, and the fuzzy guitar atmospherics of early-'90s shoegaze. After further cementing their status as cult favorites with their third album, Among My Swan, Mazzy Star became displeased with the direction of their career and went on indefinite hiatus.
