  • Fall 04 9-16.Idd
CENTER FOR AUSTRIAN STUDIES AUSTRIAN STUDIES NEWSLETTER Vol. 16, No. 2 Fall 2004 Thomas Klestil at home and abroad by Anton Pelinka Thomas Klestil (1932-2004), the seventh federal president of Austria since 1945, died less than two days before his tenure as head of state would have ended. Klestil’s life and career reflect the success story of the Second Republic, but also some critical aspects of Austria. In America, where he spent many years as a diplomat, he did much to promote a positive Austrian image. As president, he tempered that judiciously with post-Waldheim honesty and won many friends for Austria in Central Europe. However, within his own country, he was a controversial man who was sometimes at odds with his party and lacked the necessary power to change policy. Klestil was the product of an atypical social and political environment: His family was strictly Catholic, but his father worked for the Vienna public transportation authority. As a streetcar conductor, his father was part of an overwhelmingly socialist milieu. But his Catholic background made him and his family a minority—a Catholic conservative exception, living in a typical blue-collar part of Vienna (Erdberg); a member of the Catholic conservative camp surrounded by members of the socialist camp. Thomas Klestil’s career was influenced by these roots. During his studies at the University of Economics in Vienna, he joined a Catholic fraternity—the “Cartell-Verband” (CV), which has always been strongly identified with the Christian Social Party, with the Dollfuß Regime and, beginning in 1945, with the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP).

  • “Queue”: a Case of Chinese Scalping
Migration, Masculinity, and Mastering the “Queue”: A Case of Chinese Scalping RACHEL K. BRIGHT Keele University N 1906 a South African newspaper, The Prince, published a picture of Ia Chinese man’s scalp, which it had bought from an ex-prisoner. According to the original newspaper account and the subsequent government investigation, staff and prisoners were scalping Chinese men in the morgue on demand since at least May 1906, and selling them to colonial officials.1 ‘Queues’ were also being taken from living Chinese prisoners.2 The one sold to the newspaper was traced back to the execution of two Chinese prisoners at Pretoria Jail. When exhumed, both had been scalped. Prisoner witnesses attested that the 1 The Prince, 29 September 1906, 1116 had a photograph of the scalp (the front page), and 1118–1119 the story. • Hair from You to Me Our Hair Criteria
Hair from you to me Freedom Wigs is a company that specifically looks after those with long term extensive hairloss (mostly those with Alopecia Areata, Totalis and Universalis) and we handcraft a medical prosthesis or hairpiece that is specifically designed for those with extreme hair loss conditions. Here at Freedom we create hairpieces that are comfortable, secure, life like and life changing. We work hard to ensure that people who need our hairpiece have the most realistic and natural looking hairpiece possible but to do this we need 100% unprocessed virgin human hair and this is where you can help us to help change a life with just one ponytail from you. Our hair criteria We need your hair cut off ponytail or tails to be 14 inches or longer (longer is best). This is because we need as much length as possible to create new hair pieces of varying lengths for our clients for us the longer your hair is the better it is. We need your hair to be completely unprocessed. By this we mean NO colour or perming including colouring from henna dye. The reason for this is because it can take up to twenty ponytails to create just one hairpiece we absolutely can’t take any hair that will fade or change colouring after we have made it, or that has become weakened from colouring. Your hair must not include more than a few grey hairs however predominantly grey hair is accepted. If your hair contains the odd grey hairs in your ponytail (not salt & pepper) then that is absolutely fine but any more than that and we are unable to use the hair as again the hair is blended with so many other ponytails that we would have to pick out each individual grey hair to ensure that all of the hair was the same colour.

  • How to Do a Sock Bun
How to do a Sock Bun Your child will need a Sock Bun for all performances, unless I tell you otherwise for a special hair style/specific dance. Supplies: A Donut/Bun. Different sizes are available, get one to match the size of your child’s head. You can use any bobby pins – I recommend BunHeads or these Conair ones I found at Walmart. It only takes a few to hold hair in place with these. Pony tail holders – to match your child’s hair color & Hair Spray. I recommend Aussie (purple can). 1) Start with a high ponytail on the CROWN of your head. Not in the back, and not on top. No fly away hair, use gel or hairspray. 2) Some will roll hair onto the donut from the top, I find this hard with long hair. You can do it anyway that you prefer- but make sure the bun is secure to the head and will not come off. Sometimes when you roll the hair down and secure with bobby pins – the bun ends up falling out. I am showing the other method – where you wrap the hair over the donut. Put the donut around the ponytail. 3) Lay one layer of hair over the donut and put a ponytail holder around it to secure it. 4) You can then wrap the hair around & use bobby pins to secure the hair. OR you can braid it. It is up to you if you wrap the hair or braid it, you cannot tell from stage that some girls have braids and some do not; and we will usually have a hair piece or bow to cover the braid.
