Porém, a falta de estudos ontogenéticos, como os realizados para Mariliasuchus amarali, levou à atribuição de novos gêneros e espécies aos poucos crânios completos encontrados. A presente contribuição traz a descrição de um espécime juvenil de Baurusuchidae depositado no acervo do Museu de Ciências da Terra no Rio de Janeiro sob o número MCT 1724 - R. Trata-se de um rostro e mandíbula associados e em oclusão, com o lado esquerdo melhor preservado que o direito, e dentição zifodonte extremamente reduzida. O fóssil possui 125,3 mm de comprimento preservado da porção anterior do pré-maxilar até a extremidade pos- terior do dentário; 117,5 mm de comprimento preservado do pré-maxilar aos palatinos e altura lateral de 51,4 mm. Entre as informações de caráter ontogenético identificadas destacam-se: ornamentação suave composta de estrias vermiformes muito espaçadas e largas, linha ventral do maxilar mais reta, dentário levemente inclinado dorsalmente na porção mediana e sínfise mandibular menos vertical que em outros baurussúqui- dos de tamanho maior. A maioria das características rostrais e dentárias, diagnósticas para Baurusuchus pachecoi, foi identificada no exemplar MCT 1724 - R: rostro alto e comprimido lateralmente, além de dentição zifodonte com forte redução dentária, que culmina em quatro dentes pré-maxilares e cinco maxilares. -

The animal is thereby placed in a position to express its genetic potential (making it an attractive mate) in terms of maintenance of mass, condition, reproduction and mass of calf at weaning. If the animal's feeding status at a given time is known, a supplementary lick can be formulated, and the shortage of a specific mineral or minerals can then be identified. It is accepted that most game yield the same results as in the case of cattle, considering that both are ruminants. There are no commercially registered products that can be used for game. All products are registered for cattle, sheep and goats. Nutritional shortage in natural grazing There is either an over-abundance of low quality grass (sour veld) for grazers, or there is too little rough food of high quality (sweet veld) for browsers. The situation is further worsened by game being “tamed” by intensive farming and being limited to certain areas by the construction of game fences. -
Carnivore-Specific Stable Isotope Variables and Variation in The
458 Carnivore-specific stable isotope variables and variation in the foraging ecology of modern and ancient wolf populations: case studies from Isle Royale, Minnesota, and La Brea K. Fox-Dobbs, J.K. Bump, R.O. Peterson, D.L. Fox, and P.L. Koch Abstract: We use carbon and nitrogen isotope data collected from two North American gray wolf (Canis lupus L., 1758) populations (Isle Royale and northern Minnesota) to both calculate carnivore-specific isotopic variables and investigate wolf foraging ecology. The isotopic enrichments of 13C and 15N that occur between mammalian carnivores and their prey have not been well defined in modern populations. We use bone collagen from the Isle Royale National Park wolf, moose (Alces alces (L., 1758)), and beaver (Castor canadensis Kuhl, 1820) populations to determine trophic enrichment factors of 1.3% ± 0.6% for d13C and 4.6% ± 0.7% for d15N. We apply these carnivore-specific fractionation factors to a case study from the fossil record, and reconstruct the diets of late-Pleistocene dire wolves (Canis dirus (Leidy, 1858)) from the La Brea tar pits. We use the Minnesota wolf tissue (collagen, hair, muscle) isotopic data to estimate carnivore population subsample sizes needed to replicate the mean values of the whole population within one standard deviation. Finally, we compare the Isle Royale and Minnesota collagen and hair isotopic data to published d13C and d15N values for North Amer- ican gray wolf populations. We find that interpopulation differences in isotope variances provide insight into wolf foraging ecology. Originally described on the basis of a single specimen including a remarkably complete and well-preserved skull and lower jaw, S. clarki is now known from five additional specimens that preserve portions of the craniofacial skeleton. Collectively, these six specimens represent all elements of the head skeleton except the stapedes, thus making the craniofacial skeleton of S. clarki one of the best and most completely preserved among all known basal mesoeucrocodylians. In this report, we provide a detailed description of the entire head skeleton of S. clarki, including a portion of the hyobranchial apparatus. The two most complete and well-preserved specimens differ substantially in several size and shape variables (e.g., projections, angulations, and areas of ornamentation), suggestive of sexual dimorphism. -

The objective of this study was to report the first case of botulinum intoxication associated with osteopathy in the state of Acre, as well as to alert breeders and veterinarians to the incidence of this disease in cattle farming. Case: The present report is an outbreak of botulism in the municipality of Acrelândia, in the state of Acre, which resulted in the death of 16 Nelore beef cattle in approximately 30 days. The affected animals were females in reproductive phase maintained under extensive breeding system. The main clinical signs presented were weakness in the pelvic limbs, prostra- tion, recumbency and death in less than 48 h. Only one animal, with similar symptomatology, was found alive and submit- ted to emergency therapeutic measures, but without success. During the necropsy of this bovine, no significant changes were found, only related to the decubitus and agony time, except for fragments of long bones visualized in the reticulum. Samples of bone particles, ruminal contents, reticulum, rumen and intestine fragments were collected for the detection of botulinum toxins by the mouse bioassay method, as well as brain and brain stem for differential diagnosis of rabies and bovine spongiform encephalopathy by direct immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry, respectively. -

Recently, it has been suggested that the Crocodyliformes, especially the Baurusuchidae, were the top predators of the Bauru Group, based on their anatomical convergence with theropods and the dearth of those last ones in the fossil record of this geological group. Methods Here, we erect the hypothesis that assumption is taphonomically biased. For this purpose, we made a literature survey on all the published specimens of Theropoda, Baurusuchidae and Titanosauria from all geological units from the Bauru Group. Also, we gathered data from the available literature, and we classifed each fossil fnd under a taphonomic class proposed on this work. Results We show that those groups have diferent degrees of bone representativeness and diferent qualities of preservation pattern. Also, we suggest that baurusuchids lived close to or in the abundant food plains, which explains the good preserva- tion of their remains. Theropods and titanosaurs did not live in association with such environments and the quality of their preservation has thus been negatively afected. Conclusions We support the idea that the Baurusuchidae played an important role in the food chain of the ecological niches of the Late Cretaceous Bauru Group, but the possible biases in their fossil record relative to Theropoda do not support the conclusion that baurusuchids outcompeted theropods. -

In this paper, we report on the frst record of a large‑sized canid from this site, namely dentognathic remains, referable to a young adult individual that displays hypercarnivorous features (e.g., the reduction of the m1 metaconid and entoconid) that allow us to include these specimens in the hypodigm of the late Early Pleistocene species Canis (Xenocyon) lycaonoides. Much fossil evidence suggests that this species was a cooperative pack‑hunter that, unlike other large‑sized canids, was capable of social care toward kin and non‑kin members of its group. This rather derived hypercarnivorous canid, which has an East Asian origin, shows one of its earliest records at Dmanisi in the Caucasus, at the gates of Europe. Interestingly, its dispersal from Asia to Europe and Africa followed a parallel route to that of hominins, but in the opposite direction. Hominins and hunting dogs, both recorded in Dmanisi at the beginning of their dispersal across the Old World, are the only two Early Pleistocene mammal species with proved altruistic behaviour towards their group members, an issue discussed over more than one century in evolutionary biology. Wild dogs are medium- to large-sized canids that possess several hypercarnivorous craniodental features and complex social and predatory behaviours (i.e., social hierarchic groups and pack-hunting of large vertebrate prey typically as large as or larger than themselves). -
