OSHMAN FAMILY JCC PRESENTS GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING BASSIST AND HIS TRIO Thursday, December 4, 2014

Palo Alto, CA–October 21, 2014–Oshman Family JCC continues its Giants Series with an appearance by Grammy Award-winner and legendary bassist RON CARTER AND HIS TRIO. Among the most original, prolific, and influential bassists in jazz, Ron Carter has more than 2,000 albums to his credit, and has recorded with greats including Lena Horne, B.B. King, and the Kronos Quartet. In addition to a successful career as a soloist and ensemble member, Mr. Carter has also been commended for his influence on the community as a professor at Juilliard and an active member of the Jazz Foundation of America. Most recently, Mr. Carter was honored with the title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, France’s premiere cultural award. The performance will take place 7:30pm Thursday, December 4, 2014 at the Oshman Family JCC Schultz Cultural Arts Hall 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto. Born in Ferndale, Michigan, Ron Carter began playing the cello at the age of 10, but soon discovered a love for jazz and moved primarily to the . He also continued studying the cello, as well as the piccolo bass and electric bass. Carter received his Master’s in double bass at the Manhattan School of Music, and had his big break as a member of the in the 1960s. After leaving the quintet in 1968, Carter regularly recorded as a sideman on many albums for , , and many others for . He began recording as a band leader in the 1970s, working with musicians such as , , and . As a fixture in not only the jazz world but in the music scene as a whole, Carter has collaborated with a diverse array of acts from Luther Vandross to alternative hip-hop group .

A dedicated educator as well as a musician, Carter was honored with the title Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the Music Department of the City College of New York after having taught there for twenty years, and joined the faculty of Juilliard in 2008. In addition to teaching, Carter uses his vast expertise as an agent for social change, appearing in the compilation album Stolen Moments: Red Hot+Cool to raise awareness and support for the AIDS epidemic in African- American communities. Ron Carter has been honored with awards and commendations including two Grammy Awards and an honorary degree from the prestigious . Called “arguably the greatest bass player jazz has ever known” by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Carter continues to impress audiences with his virtuosic talent.
