Communities in Schools is working with the city of Waco to coordinate the run. “I’m so excited about this run; it’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit,” said Basking Associated Press Ridge, N.J., sophomore Rachel Creedon. “It’s a great addition to this weekend’s festivities.” FIRST RESPONSE Ohio State University student Nicholas Flores reacts as police respond on Monday to an attack on campus in The Wonderland Run features a one-mile Columbus, Ohio. walk, a 5K run and a 10K run. Both the running races will start at 8 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Austin Avenue and Third Street in front of City Hall.

  • 7.9 the Wood Determines the Sound?
7-102 7. Neck and body of the guitar 7.9 The Wood Determines the Sound? Mahogany! Maple! Rosewood! Men oft believe, if only they hear wordy pother, that there must surely be in it some thought or other [Goethe]. And the usual thinking is: “the electric guitar is a musical instrument made of wood. In all musical instruments made of wood, the wood determines the sound. The more noble the wood, the more noble the sound.” Goethe’s witch’s kitchen – a suitable location for deception and magic – holds more such articles of faith, but let us keep some distance from alchemy, and give physics the priority here: how does the body of the guitar vibrate, and in what way will the vibration of this body influence the sound? In the material-science course, every luthier learns about different tonewoods and their sound-determining material-parameters: “the denser the wood, the more brilliant, treble- rich the sound; the higher the stiffness, the longer the sustain (P. Day).” As if that were self- evident, this statement and similar ones are based on the assumption that the findings that are valid for violins and acoustic guitars apply to electric guitars, as well. If we now add that board of experts who listen to an electric guitar first of all without amplification, we quickly arrive at a conglomerate of teachings that, between them, could not be more contradictory. All the while two simple principles would really help us: 1) Compared to the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar functions very differently. Findings derived from the one type of guitar may not be sight-unseen applied to the other type.

  • Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner
Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner Before you attempt to tune any stringed instrument, the intonation should be checked and, if necessary, adjusted to the correct position. If you’ve never used a Peterson tuner before, then it is almost certain that your instrument is not yet correctly intonated and will not sound its best until you address it. Now that you have a Peterson, you can achieve professional quality results with the help of the tips below, and the intonation will be the best it can be on your instrument. You’ll need your Peterson tuner, a short guitar cord, a small screwdriver and a set of new strings. Before starting, find a surface upon which to lay your guitar that is free of any objects which could damage your instrument and cover it with a towel or similar soft material. Remember to tune the guitar in the position in which you would normally play it (i.e. around your neck, supported by a strap), but adjust the bridge of the guitar after laying it on a flat surface. If you tune the guitar while it’s laying flat, gravity will affect the tension of the neck and skew the results. If you adjust the bridge while the guitar is hanging from a strap on your shoulder, there is a risk that the guitar’s finish will be damaged by the screwdriver. If possible, take the opportunity to clean the fingerboard after the old strings have been removed. New strings will stay clean and sound good a lot longer if the fingerboard is free of grime and dirt.

ASSOCIATION FOR CONSUMER RESEARCH Labovitz School of Business & Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, 11 E. Superior Street, Suite 210, Duluth, MN 55802 Extending Generalizations About the Disposition of Meaningful Possessions to Buyers With a Shared Self John Lastovicka, Arizona State University USA Karen Fernandez, University of Auckland NZ We extend Lastovicka and Fernandez’ (2005) naturalistic study of garage sales to an on-line setting, and offer prescriptions for both buyers and sellers of meaningful possessions. It has been argued that it is in buyers’best interests to appear uncommitted in their enthusiasm about products when negotiating with a seller. In contrast, our field research with on-line auction buyers suggests the opposite. In the case of a consumer disposing of a meaningful possession through selling—when a shared self is sensed between the buyer and the seller—our results show such disclosure is a benefit to the buyer.
