Scientific Name: Calamagrostis canadensis (Michx.) Beauv Common Names: Bluejoint Reedgrass, Macoun’s Reedgrass Life Form: Graminoid Site Preferences: Moist to wet bogs, meadows, prairies, open forests. Low to high elevations, wet permafrost sites, performs best on deep wet soils with high organic content (Burton & Burton, 2003; Matheus & Omtzigt, 2013; Wynia, 2002) Tolerances: High flood tolerance, can be drought tolerant once established, very winter hardy, can be shade tolerant, tolerant to nutrient-poor soils, permafrost, slightly acidic soils, slightly saline soils (Banerjee, Creasey, & Gertzen, 2001; Matheus & Omtzigt, 2013) Distribution: Across Canada (Wynia, 2002) Above: Calamagrostis canadensis, Rob Routledge, Sault College, Buggwood.org, some rights reserved CC BY Plant Identification: This plant is a tall grass with erect, slender stems which are generally between 2 and 4 feet tall (Burton & Burton, 2003), but has been reported to grow up to 6 feet in Alaska (Banerjee et al., 2001). Stands of this species often appear hummocky due to creeping rhizomes and root stocks. Long narrow leaves are tinted blue and rough to the touch. The flowering head is open with a main axis and several branches that are further branched. Each branch ends in a flower which turns into a single seed. The flowering head often turns purplish in color (Wynia, 2002). Seeds are approximately 3 mm in length with callus hairs at the base (Banerjee et al., 2001). Harvesting Considerations: In Bulkley Valley, northwestern British Columbia, C. canadensis is ready for harvest between September 10th and October 17th (Burton & Burton, 2003). This may vary in the Yukon and should be determined by forecasting earlier in the season (Banerjee et al., 2001). -
Grasses, Sedges, and Rushes Within the Park Is the Proliferation of Exotic Plants, Particularly Non-Native Eurasian Grass Species
Shenandoah National Park National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Full Species List of Grasses, Sedges & Rushes Collectively referred to as graminoids, grass and the grass-like (sedges and rushes) species account for 13% of the vascular plants within Shenandoah National Park and are found in a variety of habitats. While typically associated with open areas such as meadows and lawns, graminoids can also be found in forest ecosystems. Despite their relative abundance, these species are often overlooked because of their small wind-pollinated flowers and nondescript linear leaves. The largest threat to native grasses, sedges, and rushes within the park is the proliferation of exotic plants, particularly non-native Eurasian grass species. In Shenandoah National Park grasses can be easily viewed at Big Carex buxbaumii Meadows where colonial bent grass (Agrostis capillaris) and tall oatgrass (Arrhenatherum elatius) are especially abundant. The troublesome invasive species Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) can be seen throughout the Elkwallow picnic area where it is has displaced nearly all other forest understory plants. Reed Canary-Grass Marsh System
Bluejoint – Reed Canary-grass Marsh System: Palustrine Subsystem: Herbaceous PA Ecological Group(s): Basin Wetland Global Rank: GNR State Rank: S5 General Description These marshes occur in a variety of landscape settings, from river backwaters to upland depressions. The most typical species are bluejoint (Calamagrostis canadensis var. canadensis) and reed canary-grass (Phalaris arundinacea). Associates vary widely, but commonly include mannagrass (Glyceria spp.), rice cutgrass (Leersia oryzoides), three-way sedge (Dulichium arundinaceum var. arundinaceum), Joe-Pye- weed (Eutrochium fistulosum, E. maculatum), common cat-tail (Typha latifolia), swamp dewberry (Rubus hispidus), wool-grass (Scirpus cyperinus) and other Scirpus spp. The invasive species, common reed (Phragmites australis ssp. australis), purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), narrow-leaved cat-tail (Typha angustifolia) and Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica), are frequently a major problem in these systems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a three level framework that includes landscape assessments (Level I), rapid assessments (Level II), and intensive surveys of wetland communities (Level III). The EPA conducted a national wetland condition assessment in 2011 using a new rapid assessment method (USA-RAM) that was not calibrated to specific regions. The objectives of this study were to compare the relationships between USA-RAM to the Level I and III assessments, analyze the influence of spatial scale on Level I analysis, and determine whether within-wetland or landscape features were more important in structuring macroinvertebrate communities. Plant communities from 22 wetlands of varying levels of landscape disturbance were surveyed in 2012 and 2013 and macroinvertebrate communities were surveyed twice in the 2013.
