Go, Brock Business Team! Wednesday, January 11, 1995 Volume 33, Issue 1 Go, Brock Business Team! Brock's business students have established a national reputation as a result of their outstanding performance in the first round of the Intercollegiate Business Competition (ICBC). In cumulative standings, Brock finished in the top five--our best showing ever. The ICBC, dubbed the "Stanley Cup of Undergraduate Business Schools," is conducted annually by host institution Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Brock will send four teams to the final round at Queen's later this month. Teams made up of two to three students were slotted into six categories: Marketing (Paul Morris, Mike Russell); Labor Arbitration (Wendy Martin, Bryan Guilfoil); Management Information Systems (Matt Hillier, Edmund Lau); Finance (Barbara Manchester, Darren Griffith); Accounting (Geoff Ostrow, Steve Campbell); and Business Policy (Geoff Colley, Art Janzen, Dan Botari). Twenty-five to 30 teams competed in each of these categories. In the first round of competition held in October, the teams were sent a case study by mail. Length restrictions and a strict deadline placed great demands and pressure on the participants, who were also managing a full course load. Each team submitted a written report of analYSis and recommendations to be judged by a board of professors and prominent business people. The aim of the competition is to provide the opportunity for students across Canada to exchange ideas, develop new skills and promote their respective schools and programs. Barb Manchester, a finance student in her final year at Brock, finds the competition to be a truly challenging experience. "It was very interesting and has taught us a great deal about our business field by presenting us with a real-life situation and asking us what we would do." When results came in after the first round, Brock teams had made their mark with two first-place finishes and one second­ place finish. Brock will send teams to the finals in Business Policy, Labor Arbitration and Finance. As a member of the Finance Team, Barb is looking forward to the finals. "We will get to meet some very impressive people who are established in the business community, as well as top business students from across Canada." Students were chosen by their business professors to participate in the ICBC. These students are active in their classes and student clubs. Several are working on their second degree and all share ambitious career aspirations. Because of its top-five overall standing, Brock will send a Debate Team to the final round.     Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 An Exhibition and Public Program Touring Internationally, 2016-2017 Roee Rosen, still from Confessions Coming Soon, 2007, video. 8:40 minutes. Video, possibly more than any other form of communication, has shaped the world in radical ways over the past half century. It has also changed contemporary art on a global scale. Its dual “life” as an agent of mass communication and an artistic medium is especially intertwined in Israel, where artists have been using video artistically in response to its use in mass media and to the harsh reality video mediates on a daily basis. The country’s relatively sudden exposure to commercial television in the 1990s coincided with the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, and major shifts in internal politics. Artists responded to this in what can now be considered a “renaissance” of video art, with roots traced back to the ’70s. An examination of these pieces, many that have rarely been presented outside Israel, as well as recent, iconic works from the past two decades offers valuable lessons on how art and culture are shaped by larger forces. Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 traces the development of contemporary video practice in Israel and highlights work by artists who take an incisive, critical perspective towards the cultural and political landscape in Israel and beyond. Showcasing 35 works, this program includes documentation of early performances, films and videos, many of which have never been presented outside of Israel until now. Informed by the international 1 history of video art, the program surveys the development of the medium in Israel and explores how artists have employed technology and material to examine the unavoidable and messy overlap of art and politics.

    Spring 1981 Three Angles of Coordination for Monitoring the Labyrinthian Space 1 Research Narrative Introduction A closed-circuit camera system or CCTV, often used in surveillance technology, sends the “feed,” or video signal, from a camera directly to a monitor. We now often see these in supermarkets and gas stations. Because we are accustomed to the constant presence of video in our daily lives, the aesthetic implications of our interaction with this technology--the psychological feedback loop created as “I” look at a Closed Circuit (1977) by Buky Schwartz camera’s view of “me” in this “space,” rendered flat into a plane on the monitor- -often goes unscrutinized or unquestioned. That is “me,” “here. ” The artist Buky Schwartz interrogates these assumptions of video technology’s seemingly objective reproduction of space through his video installations. Unlike film, video enables instantaneous feedback through a closed- circuit camera system, capturing and playing back moving images in real time. As video technology was introduced to Buky Schwartz standing in Closed Circuit (1977) amateur and consumer markets in the late Re-constructions: Preserving the Video Installations of Buky Schwartz 2 1960s, this revelation of instantaneous feedback inspired a generation of artists, manipulating and commenting on the relationship between media, spectator, and self. Employing a technology designed and popularized for the dissemination of mass media to create unique, personal, and artistic works represents a seismic shift in the understanding of the medium. In the words of Marshal McLuhan: “The artist is indispensable in the shaping and analysis and understanding of the life of forms, and structures created by electric technology.”1 Buky Schwartz (1932-2009) was one such artist.

    JRAC Fitzwilliam Society Committee meeting before the London Dinner JRAC 2017 The London Dinner in the Hall of the Ironmongers Company 68 JRAC The Society President, Rachael Webb, speaking after the London Dinner September Reunion Weekend 2017 JRAC The 83rd Reunion Weekend was held on the last weekend of September, timed to coincide with the University-wide Alumni Festival. As ever, a wide programme of events was scheduled, and we were delighted to welcome back 279 alumni and their guests to Fitzwilliam. The weekend began with the Fitzwilliam Society Committee meeting on the Friday afternoon, which was followed by the Society AGM on the Saturday. The AGM minutes and Society Accounts are reproduced towards the end of the Journal. The Friday evening saw 42 Past-vs-Present players join other members of College for a formal dinner in Hall. Entitled Releasing life sentence prisoners: when does life mean life?, her lecture was extremely well- attended and provided a thought-provoking start to the lighter entertainments of the weekend. The Master and Dr Padfield hosted a lunch at the Master’s Lodge on the Saturday for benefactors who are members of the Master’s Circle, which was then followed by a splendid concert held in the Chapel.
