A staple in the region and an emerging program on the nationalQuick stage, the Facts Manhattanville and College Athletic Contents Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. A program-record 305 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2008- 09 season, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams last season, the program has expanded to a record 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams established in the last two years alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Three Valiant squads (men’s , and men’s tennis) earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships in 2008-09 and both the men’s and women’s hockey teams spent much of the year with national rankings. Sixteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference tournaments last year, including four conference championship game appearances. In all, Manhattanville teams posted an impressive .548 winning percentage (184-151-6) last season, with two Valiants teams also setting new program records for wins in a single season. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2008-09 as well. Men’s hockey Chris Trafford and women’s hockey center Holly Nonis became the 15th and 16th Valiants to earn All-American honors following the season, while the pair were two of four players to be named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned three conference Rookie of the Year awards and 31 All-Conference honors. The only coach the program has ever known, Levinthal started the Valiants from scratch before the 1999-2000 season, had Manhattanville in the ECAC West Championship Game in his second season, and today has Manhattanville perennially among the top programs in the country. A strong recruiter, teacher and leader, Levinthal’s teams have been over .500 every season since the debut year of 1999-2000 and have gone to four NCAA Tournaments. The two-time ECAC West Coach of the Year has also led the team to two ECAC West regular-season titles (2005-06 and 2006-07) and three ECAC West Tournament championships in the last five seasons (2004-05, 2006-07 and 2007-08). While Levinthal oversees all aspects of the Valiant program, he directly coordinates Manhattanville’s kill, which finished fourth in the country with an 87.6 percent success rate in 2007-08 and led the nation in 2006-07. On a national scale, Levinthal enters 2009-10 fifth in career winning percentage among active Division III coaches with at least 10 years experience. Manhattanville’s 167-68-26 (.690) record also places Levinthal 21st among active Division III coaches in career wins, but one of only five mentors to do so in fewer than 15 seasons. Aside from the successes on the ice, Levinthal’s teams also thrive in the classroom and in the community. Levinthal’s Valiant teams perform nearly 1,000 hours of community service each year and routinely have a cumulative grade point average above 3.20. The Valiants consistently rank among the ECAC West leaders on the Academic All-Conference Teams, and Levinthal’s teams have also been profiled in several publications for their charitable work in Westchester County. Levinthal’s teams have hit their stride in the last five seasons, posting a combined 96-22-16 (.776) record and winning two ECAC West Regular Season Titles, three ECAC West Tournament Titles and advancing to four NCAA Tournaments. The team has also been ranked number one in the nation in three of those seasons and has spent 90 of the last 98 weeks ranked in the top 15 in the country. The Valiant leader got all that he could from last season’s 2008-09 team, placing second in the ECAC West Conference and possessing a 16-4-5 overall record that resulted in a 10th-place ranking in the final USCHO.com Div. III poll of the season. On an individual level, Levinthal was named the conference’s Co-Coach of the Year for the second time and he also guided Chris Trafford to the ECAC West Player of the Year award. Trafford was also named the program’s sixth All-American and was a finalist for the as the Division III National Player of the Year. In 2007-08, Levinthal led the Valiants to an 18-7-3 overall record and a No. 3 national ranking in the final USCHO.com Div. III poll of the season. The team won the ECAC West Tournament Championship for the second consecutive season and reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. Perhaps Levinthal’s best coaching effort came in 2006-07, when a supposedly rebuilding Valiant team went the first 23 games of the year without a loss. The Valiants maintained the nation’s number one ranking for 13 consecutive weeks and advanced to the program’s first Frozen Four with a 5-3 NCAA Tournament quarterfinal win at Playland Ice Casino over ECAC East Conference champion Babson College. Aside from the team achievements – including the program’s first ECAC West regular-season and tournament titles in the same year – several of Levinthal’s players received unprecedented accolades following the 2006-07 season. Senior Andrew Gallant won the Sid Watson Award as the Div. III National Player of the Year, becoming the first Valiant student-athlete in any sport to win a National Player of the Year award. Classmate Chris Mills also achieved another first for the program by earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. Gallant was also named the USCHO.com Player of the Year, ECAC West Player of the Year and was a consensus first-team All-American and All-Conference selection. Mills also earned USCHO.com All-America honors in 2006-07 and A.J. Mikkelsen was named a USCHO.com Rookie All-American as well, while Levinthal was recognized as the ECAC West Coach of the Year for the first time and was a finalist for the National Coach of the Year award after taking his team to the Frozen Four. Levinthal’s team the prior season was nearly as successful, starting the year 10-0-0 and ascending to the number one spot in the USCHO.com Div. III poll in December 2005 on the way to the first of back-to-back ECAC West regular-season championships. Jason Murfitt and Chad Van Diemen both earned USCHO.com All-America honors for the Valiants after the season, with Murfitt also recognized as the ECAC West Player of the Year. Levinthal’s 2004-05 team began his recent run of success with the longest winning streak in program history to start a season, going 14 games without a loss or tie to open the year. The Valiants took over the top spot in the USCHO.com Div. III National Poll for the first time in program history that season and won the ECAC West Tournament Championship with an upset win over top-seeded . Aside from his work with Manhattanville’s hockey program, Levinthal has also served as the department’s Director of Athletics since 2003-04. 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Hockey Media Guide 25 Facilities/Community Service Playland Ice Casino One of the most intimidating hockey facilities in all of Division III hockey, the historic Playland Ice Casino enters its eighth season as the home of the Manhattanville men’s and women’s hockey programs in 2009-10. Built in 1930 on the site of Westchester’s Playland Amusement Park in nearby Rye, N.Y., and the former practice home of the NHL’s , the Ice Casino features a 205’x80’ ice sheet with both balcony and ice-level seating, along with spacious, state-of-the- art locker rooms, training facilities and a newly renovated player lounge. The facility underwent a major facelift before the 2007-08 season, getting new boards that include Valiant signage, glass, benches and a net covering the circum- ference of the rink. Manhattanville’s many championship banners also hang from the rink’s rafters to honor the great tradition of both the men’s and women’s programs. On game days, Playland’s balcony seating fills with rabid Manhattanville fans, who have made the Ice Casino one of the most difficult places to play in the na- tion in recent years. The Valiant men have boasted an .800 winning percentage in seven seasons at Playland – including the second-fewest home losses in Division III since 2002-03 – and have lost no more than three home games in any season. The Ice Casino has also seen its fair share of post- The main ice surface is home not only to the Valiant Valiants at Playland Ice Casino season hockey, most notably the 2006-07 NCAA Quar- hockey teams but also to various youth teams in the area, Year at Home Pct. Locker Rooms Once the practice home of the New York Rangers, Playland Ice Casino’s state-of-the-art locker room facility has all the amenities of a setup and provides the Valiant hockey teams with some of the best locker room facilities in Division III. Each student-athlete has a large, wooden locker area of his own, adjacent to a newly renovated player lounge. During postseason play, the lounge area is used for post-game press conferences and player interviews, and during the regular season it is home to pizza parties for kids and also serves as a place for players to mingle and eat after all Valiant home games throughout the hockey season. The best feature of the Ice Casino locker room may be the training and conditioning areas located at the entrance to the locker room. The Valiants’ on-site athletic training area includes a sauna, whirlpool and full shower, and is fully staffed by the Manhattanville Athletic Training staff during all Manhattanville games and practices. The locker room facilities also include all of the necessary modern conveniences for Val- iant hockey players, including skate sharpening and stick maintenance equipment. For the coaching staff, the area also provides plenty of office and locker room space inside the main locker room, with individual lockers for the coaches and desk space for game and practice preparation. The locker room is located directly behind the Manhattanville bench, providing the team and coaching staff with easy access to the ice. Valiants in the Community The mission of Manhattanville College – to educate ethically and socially respon- sible leaders for the global community – promotes extensive service to the local community. Manhattanville’s student-athletes, including members of the men’s hockey team, are among the school’s most active members in furthering that mis- sion through community service. As with every season, the Valiant men’s hockey team will perform over 1,000 hours of community service annually, working with a variety of different groups throughout the season and offseason. This year, Manhattanville has already worked at the 2009 Burke Rehabilitation Center Wheelchair Games (pictured at right) in White Plains, N.Y., and partnered with the women’s hockey team to take part in the annual Tunnels to Towers Run in . The team has also participated in the Hudson River Swim for Life and set up for the Light the Night Walk for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and will continue to take part in service activities throughout the season. Manhattanville’s players and coaches are also active in the local youth hockey community as well, coaching and helping to run youth programs in Greenwich, Conn., Rye, N.Y., and New Rochelle, N.Y. The Valiants also donate game tickets to youth hockey teams in the area as well as to local fire departments and police stations.

26 2009-10 Manhattanville Men’s Hockey Media Guide Support Staff Strength & Conditioning Focused on the development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Depart- ment of Athletics views strength and conditioning as one of the most important developmental tools. The facilities inside Kennedy Gymnasium are a testament to that philosophy. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor of Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines. In late 2007, Manhattanville College opened a new Student Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the general student population, thus making Healthworks the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Corey Crane (Second Season, Northern Iowa ’97) Corey Crane is in the second season of his second stint as Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2009-10. Crane also serves as the school’s Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. At the school, Crane is responsible for managing and providing the design, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the strength and conditioning program utilized by all 21 varsity sports. Crane brings a wealth of strength and conditioning experience to Manhattanville. He previously spent two years as the Associate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point, working with all of the school’s 17 sports but focusing primarily on the Academy’s football, men’s lacrosse, hockey and volleyball programs. Crane also has worked as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Western Illinois University during the 2005-06 school year and previously spent one year in Purchase as Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach before taking an assistant position at Army for four years. Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach Jonathan Plato (First Season, Syracuse ’05) Jonathan Plato is in his first season as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Manhattanville in 2009-10. Plato comes to Purchase after competing at Big East power Syracuse University as a member of the football team. For the past four years, Plato has worked for MTV Networks as a senior financial analyst managing international business requests in Europe, Asia and Japan. Plato was also involved with enterprise One system user security and managing quarterly auditing by Sarbanes Oxley, for enterprise One. In December 2009, Plato will be certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning specialist, as well as being named a National Strength and Conditioning Associate. Sports Medicine The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville College are located inside the hub of Manhattanville Athletics, Kennedy Gymnasium, and are the only place where Valiant student-athletes from all 21 varsity sports come to receive comprehensive health care from any of the Athletic Department’s three fully-certified, full-time athletic trainers. The athletic training staff has five main objectives: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries that do occur; rehabilitation; health care administration and professional development. The athletic training staff also has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments. The Manhattanville Sports Medicine staff can be contacted throughout the day via phone at (914) 323-7276, via fax at (914) 323-7212, or via email at [email protected]. Head Athletic Trainer Scott McIver (Sixth Season, Iona ’83) Scott McIver, MS, ATC, is in his sixth season as the head athletic trainer at Manhattanville in 2009-10. McIver previously served as the school’s head trainer from 2000-02 before returning to the school before the 2006-07 school year. After departing Manhattanville in 2002, McIver was named the head athletic trainer at Iona Prep High School, providing coverage for 20 sports and 250 student-athletes. Before his first stint in Purchase, McIver served as an associate athletic trainer at Pace University for 12 years from 1989 to 2000, coordinating athletic training coverage and strength and conditioning for all Setter sports. McIver received his master’s degree in Athletic Training and Exercise Science from in 1990 and his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from . A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association, he is also an Emergency Medical Technician and a licensed massage therapist.
