Esta dissertação foi desenvolvida com o apoio da CAPES e FUJB. n Vill Resumo Pamphorichtl!Js é diagnosticado com base em vinte e sete caracteristicas apomórficas, principalmente das nadadeiras pélvicas. Entre as autapomorfias do gênero, onze são caracteres redutivos decorrentes da miniaturização das espécies. As espécies integrantes do gênero são: Pamphorichtl!Js minor (Garman), P. scalpridens (Garman), P. hollandi (Henn), P. ha.semani (Henn) e P. araguaiensisCosta. Limiahetemndria Rega.o é confirmada como membro de Limia com base em três sinapomorfias, ao contrário de estar próxima a Pamphorichtl!Jscomo sugerido por recentes autores. Pamphorichtl!Js ha.semani é o grupo irmão das demais espécies do gênero, que compõem uma tritomia formada por P. minor, P. araguaiensise P. scalpridens+ P. hollandi. A relação de grupo irmão entre Limia e Pamphorichtl?Js é corroborada por quatro sinapomorfias, três delas observadas pela primeira vez. É feita uma diagnose osteológica das espécies do gênero e cada uma das cinco espécies envolvidas é redescrita e diagnosticada. São apresentados mapas de distribuição geográfica,listas de sinonímia para as espécies e um histórico resumido da sistemática do gênero e de cada espécie em particular. 1X Abstract Pamphorichtf?ys'di agnosis is based on twenty-seven apomorphic character states, mainlyfrom the pelvic fins. Among the autapomorphies of the genus, eleven are reductive characters due to the species miniaturization. The included species are: Pamphorichtf?ys minor (Garman), P. scalpridens (Garman), P. ho//andi (Henn) and P. araguaiensis Costa Llmia heterandria Regan is confirmed as a member of Limiabased on three synapomorphies and not related to Pamphorichtf?ysas suggested by recent authors. Pamphorichtf?ys hasemani is the sister group of the other species in the genus, that comprises a trichotomy formed by Pamphorichtf?ysminor, P. araguaiensisand P. scalpndens+ P. ho/landi. The sister group relationship between Llmia and Pamphorichtf?ys is corroborated by four synapomorphies, three of them are new. An osteological description of the genus' species is provided and each species is redescribedand diagnosed. Distribution maps, synonymy lists, and a brief history of the genus and each species systematics are also provided. Carvalho*, José L. Veronezi Jr.* and Daniel R. Lacerda* We investigated sex ratio, reproductive period, fecundity, and sexual dimorphism of Pamphorichthys hollandi in southeastern Brazil. Reproductive status was identifi ed according to a female’s gonads/embryos development scale. Of the 613 collected specimens, 373 (60 %) were females and 240 (40 %) males giving a sex ratio of 1 male : 1.6 female. Sexual dimorphism was evident in respect to body size, body coloration, and anal and pelvic-fi n mor- phologies. The highest proportion of reproductive females was registered in January and February, which rep- resent wet and hot periods. The simultaneous presence of more than one litter at different stages of development within a single female characterized this species as superfetaceous. No presente estudo investigamos a razão sexual, período reprodutivo, fecundidade e dimorfi smo sexual de Pamphorichthys hollandi no sudeste do Brasil. Os estágios reprodutivos foram identifi cados com base em uma escala de desenvolvimento das gônadas/embriões. Dos 613 indivíduos coletados, 373 (60 %) eram fêmeas e 240 (40 %) machos, dando uma razão sexual de 1 macho : 1,6 fêmea. O dimorfi smo sexual foi evidente em relação ao tamanho corporal, coloração do corpo e morfologia das nadadeiras pélvica e anal. A maior incidência de fêmeas reprodutivas ocorreu em janeiro e fevereiro, que correspondem a períodos úmidos e quentes.

T. Mattox2 and Ralf Britz3 Priocharax nanus, new species, is described from the rio Negro, Brazil. It is a miniature fish that retains as an adult the larval rayless pectoral fin, a diagnostic character of the genus. Priocharax nanus possesses fewer reductive features compared to congeners, P. ariel and P. pygmaeus, from which it can be distinguished by the presence of i,6 pelvic-fin rays (vs. i,5), the presence of the claustrum (vs. claustrum absent) and the presence of two postcleithra (vs. postcleithra absent). An updated list of 213 species of miniature Neotropical freshwater fishes is presented. The greatest diversity among them is represented by the Characiformes with 87 miniature species. Priocharax nanus, espécie nova, é descrita do rio Negro, Brasil. É um peixe miniatura que retém no adulto a forma larval da nadadeira peitoral, um caráter diagnóstico do gênero. Priocharax nanus possui um número menor de caracteres redutivos quando comparado aos congêneres, P. ariel and P. pygmaeus, dos quais pode ser distinguida pela presença de i,6 raios na nadadeira pélvica (vs. i,5), presença do claustrum (vs. claustrum ausente) e presença de dois pós-cleitros (vs. pós-cleitros ausentes). Uma lista atualizada de 213 espécies de peixes miniatura de água doce neotropicais é apresentada. A maior diversidade entre eles é representada pelos Characiformes, com 87 espécies miniatura.

We evaluate the leading hypotheses for the origins Evolutionary Biology, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309-0334, USA of West Indian life, including trans-oceanic dispersal, late Cretaceous vicari- ance, and the GAARlandia land bridge at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. Location Greater Antilles, with extensive sampling in the Dominican Republic. Methods We obtained DNA from wild sampling and the aquarium trade. We sequenced three mitochondrial (12S, ND2 and Cytb) and two nuclear genes (Rh, MYH6) for a combined molecular phylogenetic analysis to evaluate spe- cies relationships and the timing of divergence events between islands and the mainland. We used Bayesian and likelihood approaches to build phylogenies, a BEAST analysis to establish the timing of colonization, and R package BioGeo- BEARS to perform a historical biogeographical reconstruction. Results Relaxed molecular clock results show that the ancestor to the West Indian clade, which includes the Limia and Hispaniolan Poecilia, diverged from a South American ancestor at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. The basal Jamaican species, L. melanogaster, split from the rest of Limia at the Oligocene/ Miocene boundary. Cuban and Cayman taxa are sister to a diverse species group from Hispaniola.
