The two major polliticall parties are gearing up this year for a once-a-decade process to draw new federall and state llegisllative districts.. The stakes are potentialllly enormous,, hellping to advantage Republlicans and Democrats in congressionall and state llegisllative ellections for the next ten years.. This process threatens to reverse our democratic process — instead of voters choosing their llegisllators,, the llegisllators and the major parties willl choose their voters with llittlle or no input from citizens..

CSPG hosted a screening of Gerrymandering,, a provocative documentary that examines how the redistricting process is being manipullated to controll polliticall outcomes.. Senator Larry Pogemilller was first ellected to the Minnesota House in 1980 and to the Minnesota Senate in 1982.. Pogemilller has been re-ellected in every generall ellection since.. He was ellected Majority Leader in 2007 and served through 2010.. As majority lleader,, he was chair of the Senate Rulles Committee and its subcommittees,, and allso served on the Senate Tax Committee.. Pogemilller is the former Vice Chair of the Nationall Conference of State Legisllatures Standing Committee on Redistricting and Ellections.. Pogemilller has a B.S.. from the University of Minnesota and an MPA from the John F.. Kennedy Schooll of Government at Harvard University..

He was first ellected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1978.. He served as House Minority Leader from 1993 to 1998 and llater as Speaker of the House from 1999 to 2007.. In Jully of 2007,, he assumed his new rolle as commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry,, and llater took over as Commissioner of the Minnesota Management and Budget Office.. Sviggum earned a bachellor''s degree in mathematics from St.. Ollaf Collllege in 1973.. He recentlly joined the Humphrey Schooll in February as a llegisllative fellllow with the Center for the Study of Pollitics and Governance.. Sviggum is allso a newlly ellected Regent of the University of Minnesota..
