Woman for her happiness must retain her deceptive fragility of appearance, combined with indomitable will, irreducible courage, & abundant health the outcome of sound nerves— Another great illusion that woman must use all her introspective clear-sightedness & unbiassed bravery to destroy—for the sake of her self respect is the impurity of sex the realisation in defiance of superstition that there is nothing impure in sex—except in the mental attitude to it—will constitute an incalculable & wider social regeneration than it is possible for our generation to imagine. 1914 1982 WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS 1865-1939 William Butler Yeats was born to an Anglo-Irish family in Dublin. His father, J. B. Yeats, had abandoned law to take up painting, at which he made a somewhat precar- ious living. His mother came from the Pollexfen family that lived near Sligo, in the west of Ireland, where Yeats spent much of his childhood. -

Irish Migration Studies in Latin America Vol. 4, No. 3: July 2006 www.irlandeses.org Carnaval do Galway The Brazilian Community in Gort, 1999-2006 By Claire Healy Gort Inse Guaire, or Gort, lies just north of the border with County Clare in south County Galway in the West of Ireland, and has a population of about three thousand people. It is situated between the Slieve Aughty mountains and the unique karstic limestone landscape of the Burren, in the heartland of the countryside made famous by Lady Augusta Gregory and the poet W.B. Yeats in nearby Coole Park and Thoor Ballylee. Nineteenth- century Gort was a thriving market town providing a commercial centre for its fertile agricultural hinterland. A Sabor Brasil shop on Georges St., Gort market was held in the market (Claire Healy 2006) square every Saturday, and sheep, cattle and pig fairs were held regularly. A cavalry barracks accommodating eight British officers and eighty-eight soldiers was situated near the town and the Dublin and Limerick mail coaches trundled along the main street. [1] Throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, day labourers congregated on the market square in the centre of town hoping for a day’s seasonal work on a farm. By the 1990s, the town had become a quiet and sparsely populated shadow of its former self. Many of the shops along the main street, Georges Street, were shutting their doors for the last time, and the town was familiar to most Irish people only as a brief stop on the bus route from Galway to the southern cities of Cork and Limerick. -

Sisters Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats (1866-1949, above, left) and Elizabeth Corbet "Lolly" Yeats (1868-1940, above, right) were pivotal figures in the advancement of the Arts and Crafts style in Ireland. Founded in England by the British designer William Morris, the Arts and Crafts Movement advocated traditional, handcrafted objects as a rebellion against soulless factory-made furnishings. The Yeats sisters were from a preeminent Irish family--their father John and brother Jack were noted painters, and their other brother was the renowned poet William Butler Yeats. Born in Enniscrone, County Sligo, Ireland, Lily Yeats was a frequent visitor to William Morris when her family moved to London in the 1870s; she would learn embroidery from his daughter, May Morris. Younger sister Lolly Yeats, also in the Morris circle, was more interested in painting and printing; by the end of the century she had written and illustrated four instructional books on sketching directly with a brush. Upon returning to Ireland, both sisters would co-found the Dun Emer Guild, a Arts and Crafts group in Dublin managed and staffed entirely by women, with the textile designer Evelyn Gleeson (1855-1944). Guilds, as opposed to factories, were a return to the Medieval and Renaissance guilds that once served as the primary centers of art production. -

W. B. Yeats Easter 1916 This poem deals with the Dublin Rebellion of Easter 1916 which is believed to have been the beginning of modern Ireland, in spite of its immediate failure. Yeats was in Dublin when it happened, and though at first he was against the violence and the bloodshed that accompanied it and he thought the sacrifice of its leaders wasteful, he sympathized with the rebels when sixteen of them were executed. In Stanza One the poet describes the previous lives of the rebels to suggest that they were average or normal citizens who sacrificed their lives for the sake of Irish independence. They were normal Irish people with "vivid faces" and he used to meet them with a nod of the head or saying polite meaningless words. However, he shared with them the love of Ireland: Be certain that they and I But lived where motely is worn The word "motely" means colourful dress which symbolizes Irish people. The stanza ends with "a terrible beauty is born" which may allude to the Birth of Hellen of Troy, Maud Gonne and Ireland because Irish independence will be accompanied by violence and bloodshed. In Stanza Two the poet mentions some of the significant rebels b eginning with "that woman" which refers to Maud Gonne, the most beautiful woman in Ireland according to Ye ats who was with the rebels; she was imprisoned in England after the rising but she escaped to Dublin in 1918. Because of her interest in Irish independence and in politics and argument, her beautiful voice became shrill. -

Letters are arranged according to year and date. 1 Introduction Henry, Augustine (1857–1930), botanical collector and dendrologist, was born on 2 July 1857 in Dundee, the first of six children of Bernard Henry (c.1825–1891) and Mary MacNamee. His father, at one time a gold-prospector in California and Australia, was a native of the townland of Tyanee on the west bank of the River Bann in co. Londonderry. Soon after Austin (as Augustine was called within his family) was born, the family moved to Cookstown, co. Tyrone, where his father was in business as a flax dealer and owned a grocery shop. Henry was educated at Cookstown Academy and in Queen's College, Galway. He studied natural sciences and philosophy, graduating with a first-class bachelor of arts degree and a gold medal in 1877. Henry then studied medicine at Queen's College, Belfast, where he obtained his master of arts degree in 1878. For a year he was in the London Hospital, and during a visit to Belfast in 1879, at the suggestion of one of his professors, he applied for a medical post in the Chinese imperial maritime customs service. Henry completed his medical studies as rapidly as he could, became a licentiate from the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, passed the Chinese customs service examinations (for which he required a working knowledge of Chinese) and and left for China in the summer of 1881. -

Yeats Considered as the Archetypal Fool: A Tantric Reading of The Herne’s Egg Margot Wilson MPhil(R) Yeats Considered as the Archetypal Fool: A Tantric Reading of ‘The Herne’s Egg (1938)’ Margot Wilson Background This essay considers Yeats’s The Herne’s Egg (1938) as the journey of the archetypal Fool1 of Tarot from Indian Vedic and Tantric perspectives. In brief, the Tarot2 system begins with ‘0 = The Fool’ and ends with ‘21 = The World’. These twenty-one cards are known as the ‘Major Arcana’ and are used in combination with four suites of ‘Minor Arcana’ cards that correspond with the hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades of recreational playing cards. In Tarot, these suites become cups, pentacles, swords and wands, symbolising water, earth, air and fire. The twenty-one Major Arcana (twenty- two including zero) comprise three cycles of seven, the number seven corresponding with the seven inner planets ‘Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn’; the Sun is synonymous with the bearing of life and Saturn synonymous with the approach of death. These planets also relate to the Vedic system of chakras, of which there are seven. Each card represents a stage of the cycle of life; note the repetition of 0 = zero and the ‘0’ of laurel in The World card. This represents the mathematical expression of zero and the symbolic image of the Ouroboros. The first card, The Fool (0) progresses to the Judgement card (XX), after which the final stage, The World is obtained, or not. If Judgement falls against the Fool, he returns to zero. -
