Following directives of the government, the people of Assam have boycotted mass gatherings, all public cultural activities and are celebrating the festival of the state indoors. Assam’s biggest festival Rongali Bihu also known as Bohag Bihu - is being celebrated with restraints this time amid lockdown due to Covid-19 crisis. The people across the state on Monday observed the first day of the week-long Rongali Bihu festival known as Goru Bihu - in accordance with tradition by maintaining social distancing norms. Goru Bihu is dedicated to the livestock. On Tuesday, the state celebrated Manuh Bihu or people's Bihu - this day marks the beginning of a new year in Assam. To celebrate Manuh Bihu, people take a special bath using a paste known as maah halodhi made of black gram and turmeric powder. After the bath, people put on new clothes and perform puja rituals in the house. The Manuh Bihu involves the tradition of seeking blessings from the elders in a family and presenting them with a ceremonial patch of Bihuwan or the Gamusa cloth, as a gift, to be worn as a symbol of the cultural pride of the Assamese people. While people celebrated the festival indoors, the Assam police personnel were seen uplifting public spirit by beating dhols, singing Bihu songs despite the lockdown.
