INTRODUCTION Massimo Tedeschi – President of the European Associations of the Via Francigena, Fidenza (Emilia-Romagna, Italy). Reflections on the Via Francigena Every year tens of thousands of people from around the world come to walk along the Via Francigena. The Via, stretching from Canterbury to Rome, attracts many for its landscapes, borghi (Italian hamlets) and cathedrals as well as the history, cuisine and culture of important European countries. This flux of pilgrims and walkers reawakens pride in the host communities promoting a new economy of goods and services along with the construction of new infrastructure. All contribute to the development of these territories while boosting private initiatives and creating new work opportunities. The Via Francigena touches territories so-called “minor” but it is not a local nor regional itinerary, not even national; it is a European itinerary. Therefore the project has a broad horizon, which represents its greatest strength and makes it appealing for people from Europe and all over the world. This is clearly demonstrated by the increasing number of visits to our official site, www.viefrancigene.org. The Via Francigena family is all-inclusive and peaceful. These characteristics constitute our very essence and strength, and can act as an example for all. In the 86 reporting pages that make up these 74 interventions from the conference, there is a photograph that illustrates the beautiful experience of our

The Circeo National Park lies in a territory that was deeply shaped by human activity, and represents one of the few remaining patches of plain wetland habitat in Central Italy. In this study distribution and few demographic information of the amphibians in the Park were provided. Seven species and 25 bibliographic and 84 original breeding sites were recorded, and population size estimations were carried out for a population of these three species: Pelophylax sinkl esculentus, Bufo balearicus and Rana dalmatina. For the studied populations of pool frog and green toad the oper- ational sex ratio and the demographic effective population size was also estimated. For Rana dalmatina, which is strictly associated to forest environment, a positive and significant correlation between the number of egg clutches and maxi- mum depth of the swamps was found. The State plain forest is the most important habitat for amphibians’ conservation in the park. The occurrence of dangerous alien species was investigated and they are evaluated as the major threat for amphibians in the park, especially the crayfish Procambarus clarkii in the State plain forest.

Suffice it to point out that four of the 22 miracles described in Book II of the "Liber Sancti Jacobi" expressly concern Italian pilgrims. This shows that there was an interest in Santiago in the first half of the 12th century, and that specific links existed. Moreover, the frequent contacts between the Bishopric in Santiago de Compostela and Rome, many of which existed as a result of the pilgrims that went to one or other, are recorded in "Historia Compostellana", which also bears witness to the existence of Italian brotherhoods of former pilgrims as far back as 1120. It records that, on the occasion of a trip he made to Rome, to obtain the rank of Archbishopric for the bishopric in Santiago de Compostela, Bishop Porto was accompanied and supported by, " ceteri quam plures Ecclesiae beati jacobi confratres, qui Beatum jacobum-olim adierant, et seipsos ipsi apostoli subjugaverant. Further proof of the strong links between Italy and Santiago, in the time of Gelmirez is provided by the fact that the sole relic of the apostle from Santiago cathedral was sent, after lengthy, voluminous correspondence, to Italy, there it prompted the establishment of a major centre of worship of St. James in Pistoia. Furthermore, as research into Italian involvement in pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela progresses, new information testifying to the existence of increasingly complex, intricate relations is constantly emerging.

    Three main groups of people settled on or near the Italian peninsula and influenced Roman civilization. The Latins settled west of the Apennine Mountains and south of the Tiber River around 1000 B.C.E. While there were many advantages to their location near the river, frequent flooding also created problems. The Latin’s’ settlements were small villages built on the “Seven Hills of Rome”. These settlements were known as Latium. The people were farmers and raised livestock. They spoke their own language which became known as Latin. Eventually groups of these people united and formed the city of Rome. Latin became its official language. The Etruscans About 400 years later, another group of people, the Etruscans, settled west of the Apennines just north of the Tiber River. Archaeologists believe that these people came from the eastern Mediterranean region known as Asia Minor (present day Turkey). By 600 B.C.E., the Etruscans ruled much of northern and central Italy, including the town of Rome. The Etruscans were excellent builders and engineers. Two important structures the Romans adapted from the Etruscans were the arch and the cuniculus. The Etruscan arch rested on two pillars that supported a half circle of wedge-shaped stones. The keystone, or center stone, held the other stones in place. A cuniculus was a long underground trench. Vertical shafts connected it to the ground above. Etruscans used these trenches to irrigate land, drain swamps, and to carry water to their cities. The Romans adapted both of these structures and in time became better engineers than the Etruscans.

  • Il Castello Di Sarmato È Un Ampio Complesso Fortificato Sito Nel Paese Di Sarmato, in Provincia Di Piacenza
    Il Castello di Sarmato è un ampio complesso fortificato sito nel paese di Sarmato, in provincia di Piacenza. Posto nella bassa val Tidone, non lontano sia dal Tidone che dal Po nella pianura Padana. Forse fondato dai barbari Sarmati, sicuramente presidio Longobardo il castello di Sarmato venne eretto verso l'anno mille. Posto nei pressi dell'incrocio di due percorsi: la via Emilia pavese e la via Francigena; era un importante avamposto, con Castel San Giovanni e Borgonovo Val Tidone, nella funzione strategica di difesa dei territori piacentini (guelfi) dai pavesi (ghibellini). La prima data certa è il 1216 quando qui si radunarono le milizie milanesi e piacentine che conquistarono le fortificazioni ghibelline sulle alture nei pressi di Rovescala. Molti furono, in quei secoli turbolenti i passaggi di mano: dai Pallastrelli agli Arcelli, dai Seccamelica agli Scotti, fino ai conti Zanardi Landi di Veano, attuali proprietari che hanno iniziato un lavoro di graduale recupero e valorizzazione. Il complesso interamente edificato in laterizio è circondato da mura, ancora ben evidenti anche se recano in parte i segni del tempo, che erano contornate da un fossato. Racchiudono un piccolo borgo di pianta rettangolare, che si articola in due strade perpendicolari, con abitazioni, l'oratorio di San Carlo Borromeo, il castello, la rocchetta, cui si accedeva tramite ponte levatoio, di cui si vedono ancora chiaramente i cardini. Tre sono i contrafforti di accesso al borgo protetti da costruzioni difensive. L'ingresso principale è a sud, protetto da un rivellino merlato con due archi, uno per il passaggio pedonale e l'altro, a sesto acuto, per quello carrabile che erano dotati di ponte levatoio.
