Page 1 Website:http://www.whitlockfamilyassociation.com Following the flurry of activity relating to the latest discoveries that I detailed in the December 2013 Newsletter and followed up with items on the Website and Facebook, the past quarter has been quieter but a steady flow of information. Many of the Virginia descendants are just picking up on the changes as they check out the above sources. In a blatant plug for Newsletter subscriptions - you heard it here first!!

There have been quite a few new subscribers who made the contact through the Website so I would like to welcome all of you the Whitlock Family Association. Those who have not yet renewed your subscription for 2014, I have sent reminders separately and I hope you will be willing to be a subscriber and supporter for another year.

While in Salt Lake City last October, the staff there were talking about the agreement that had been made with the Corporation of the City of London to release many of the London parish registers currently missing from the Family Search files. It was expected this would happen by January. It appears this has not yet happened but we did receive a copy of the St. Andrews Holborn, London marriage record for Richard Whitlock and Katherine Burchette who were married November 7,1615. These are the first common ancestors of most of the British and North American branches of the WHITLOCK02H family. My thanks to Mark and Debbie Whitlock for this great addition to our collection. See Main Line #437 in June 2014 issue.

Also included in this issue is a transcript of the 1642 Will of the above Richard Whitlock. As usual when you go back and review your research from the past, it reveals things that were not obvious at that time you received the information. Knowing Richard’s date of marriage, the date he entered Merchant Taylor’s School gives us a reasonable date of birth of about 1593.

I am still working my way through Lawrence Otis’ April 2013 disc of Whitlock data. You will notice from the Additions lists this disc contains a huge collection of census records. There were about 150 census images for the 1940 US census just for descendants of the WHITLOCK01 family. I have updated all the census files on the Website with all this new detail. I had to put aside doing more on this to write the March issue of the Newsletter but hope to finish cataloguing this disc over the next few months. Needless to say Lawrence has a January 2014 disk already sitting on my desk!! I have made the decision not to list all these census references separately in the Newsletter as anyone interested in this information can retrieve it more easily through the census files on the Website.

If you are using the Website and you have problems downloading any files, please let me know. All the images have to be coded to allow them to be downloaded and occasionally one is missed. Unfortunately the Website assumes all photographs are in jpg format and some are in pdf. If you get an error message you can click on the URL line and change the format from jpg to pdf and it should download for you. I don’t use the Website in the same way as the public so do not see some of the issues that may be of concern. Help me make it better by pointing out problems if you experience them. I pay a small monthly fee to Amazon based on the amount of data downloaded from the Website and I can tell the site is being well used which is great to see.

I am continuing to work on the British Census records with the goal of eventually having at least 1841 to 1881 complete for every county. I am currently working on Lancashire.

I was very pleased to receive from Muriel Allen a copy of the Administration for the 1832 estate of Benjamin Rumbold of Pitton, Wiltshire. Benjamin’s daughter Catherine married Thomas Whitlock in 1809 and it was speculated that Joshua Whitlock b.1811 who heads the WHITLOCK05 chart was their son. The Administration document received from Muriel shows both father and son Thomas and Joshua Whitlock providing the Bond required for the Administration. This was the proof we needed. Another example of Wills and Administration documents providing the clues to breakdown long standing brickwalls!! This connects Joshua Whitlock and all his Australian descendants to the WHITLOCK03 family, The Whitlocks of Pitton, Wiltshire #1. Benjamin Rumbold’s first wife Catherine was also a Whitlock descendant being the daughter of John & Rachel (Whitlock) Collins - also WHITLOCK03 family.

The rest of the great collection of Wills and Deeds I gathered during the last trip to Salt Lake City are listed in this issue.

Our thanks to Virginia Dodier for her comprehensive article on the fatal shooting of Dr. John Marmaduke Whitlock at Fort Stanton, NM in 1862. We have several versions of this event and I appreciate the work Virginia has put into detailing the background and characters of the participants plus the most likely sequence of events that precipitated the untimely death of Dr. Whitlock. (X7528)

The contribution by Debbie Whitlock of her collection of certificates relating to her husband, Mark’s family (W02H) is very much appreciated. While I have only printed 3496 of our certificate collection in the Newsletter, there are 4135 in the files so far.

If the Whitlock genealogy was a 100,000 piece jigsaw puzzle I would estimate we have the border done and several of the larger sections are starting to come together. Thanks to everyone who keeps an eye out for Whitlocks and who shared their research to help grow our understanding of the Whitlock family. Unfortunately the above copy of Richard Will is cut off on the right side and at the end so is somewhat incomplete. Richard Whitlock was son of John Whitlock and Agnes Planner of Wokingham, Berkshire. He likely born in the 1590's and married Katherine Burchette in 1615 at St.Andrews Holborn, London.

His Will mentions a great many family members. The Doctor Holdsworth mentioned is Richard Holdsworth (1590-1649) the Rector of St. Peter le Poer London and Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge where he was succeeded by . Anthony Tuckney’s daughter Mary married Richard Whitlock’s son John in 1652.

On June 10,1617 Richard with his brother Robert entered into a lease with Henry Montague and Adam Kirkby Executors who held the Manor of Beches belonging to Richard’s brother William. The lease was for 21 years and gave him an option of purchase which they appear to have exercised as the Manor became theirs prior to 1642.

Richard is shown attending Merchant Taylor’s school where many of his cousins were sent to learn the business of trading and commerce. His commencement date of 1603 would imply he was likely born about 1593 as most of his cousins were between 9 and 10 when they entered the school. He was one of at least 11 children from parents married in the 1560's. Based on this I have adjusted the estimate dates of birth and marriage for John Whitlock and Agnes Planner. I think they are more realistic than Agnes having a child at 56. Possible but not likely. This also fits with earliest know date of marriage for one of John and Agnes’ children. Rebecca was married in 1586.

In 1633 there is a petition of Richard Whitlock and many others, merchants of London (89 in whole) to the King. They are informed that some strangers living here have made choice of a postmaster, by whom they have sent their letters, while his Majesty has chosen William Frizell and Thomas Witherings for his postmaster for foreign services, who have hitherto carried themselves carefully. Pray the king to protect them (Frizell and Witherings) and not to suffer strangers to make their own choice.

Richard was buried in St. Peter le Poer church in London November 5, 1642.

The first thing that I clicked on was his ancestry. The Galt family tree showed he was born in 1873 in Kentucky and he died in Alameda Co. California October 17, 1963. He was a son of Dr. William Henry Galt (1827-1893) & Elizabeth Thurston Pope (1827-1883) and a descendant of the Revolutionary War Williamsburg,Virginia Doctor John Minson Galt (1744-1808).

Hamilton Pope Galt was a poet and author and there are several references to published works. Puck contained his poem on Puck’s successor Comic Supplement Feb.9,1910 . “The Autumnal Spirit” was printed in The Smart Set November 1910. The December 3, 1913 issue of the Red Bank Register of New Jersey published his story “The Amateur Santa Claus”. The Argosy Weekly issue of March 15, 1924 printed “Fresh Air” a reprint from Cavalier July 20, 1912.

In 1930 the family was living at 2445 ½ Webster Street, Berkeley, California, Hamilton Pope Galt was a journalist for a newspaper. His wife was a proofreader also for a newspaper.

Hamilton Pope Galt was married June 26, 1902 in Windsor, Ontario to Maude Louise Crichton (1882-1969) one of two daughters of Sarah Jane Whitlock (1853-1887) & Charles Crichton. Sarah Jane Whitlock was the only sister of my great grandfather Fredrick Whitlock and his eight brothers. The family is part of the WHITLOCK01 family, The Whitlocks of Langtree, Devon. The Galts lived in Berkeley, California and there were three daughters Urith Pope Galt b.1903?, Mildred E. Galt b.1905? and Janet C. Galt b.1909. MORGAN WHITLOCK (1833-1864) by Heather Whitlock Hays His name was Pvt. Morgan Whitlock. He was born in Virginia in 1833. He was married to Sarah DePreist (born 1836) on March 13th 1856. He had 4 children Charles (born 1857), James Morgan (born 1858), Martha Alice (born 2/20/1861) and Minnie (born 3/5/1864). The 1860 census has him listed as living in Augusta County, VA, occupation “Plasterer” and confirms that he could both read and write.

According to his Military Muster Roll, he was drafted from Augusta County, Virginia to serve as a Confederate Soldier with Captain John C. Carpenter (Carpenter’s Battery) joining his regiment on April 13, 1862. His Company was Virginia Light Artillery. He served in as many as 15 historic Battles including, McDowell and Valley Campaigns, Cross Keys and Port Republic, Cedar Mountains, 2nd Manassas Battle, Sharpsburg, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Gettysburg, and Fisher Hill.

It was during the Battle of Fisher Hill on September 22, 1864 that he was captured and taken prisoner by Union soldiers. He was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland prison camp. This place was one of the most notoriously terrible prisons for Confederate Soldiers. There were no barracks here. The soldiers lived in tents. The prison’s max capacity was 10,000. Though at times, the camp was occupied by as many as 20,000 soldiers. Not much is known about his time at Point Lookout (it was short) meticulous records were not kept concerning this facility.

He arrived at Point Lookout on October 3, 1864. On November 1, 1864 he was part of a prisoner exchange, which included 3,023 other paroled confederate prisoners of war. Among the released were 4 citizens, 4 surgeons and 74 officers. He arrived at Venus Point, Savannah River, GA on November 15, 1864. He was most likely processed through Fort Polanski as many soldiers were at that time. He died the following day. November 16, 1864. He is Buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery (North) Lot 922 in Savannah, GA.

Our thanks to Heather for the above article. Morgan Whitlock is part of the WHITLOCK35 family. He was the son of George W. & Nancy (Kent) Whitlock of Augusta Co., Georgia

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.33 No.1 Mar 2014 Page 12 WHITLOCK YDNA PROJECT - UPDATE We are in the process of completely revising the Whitlock YDNA project. Since 2007 the project has been in house and the only compilation of all the test results has been on my computer. I have sent copies out (without names) to anyone participating. We will now have a profile page on the Guild of One Name Studies site and our project will included in the Projects section of the Family Tree DNA site. We also get a reduced rate for YDNA 37 marker tests through FTDNA £80 ($150). This should make our project more affordable and more public and hopefully attract more participants.

While we are only testing the male YDNA, the mitochondrial DNA is also involved through the Haplogroups. Haplogroups track the migration from the Mitochondrial Eve over the last 100,000 years. The 26 different branches are labeled A to Z with sub-branches alternating numbers and letters. eg R1b1a2 etc They are only a very rough estimate of how these people move out of Africa and populated the world.

So far our results have confirmed what our paper research has indicated. Our recent connection of the Virginia families back to England was indicated by the paper research and the YDNA tests confirmed we were on the right track. Finally finding the parents of the immigrant ancestor was amazing.

The paper research into the WHITLOCK16, the New Jersey families indicated an origin in Wiltshire and the YDNA research shows these family share YDNA with the descendants of the Pitton, Wiltshire families. Interestingly the WHITLOCK09 families from Connecticut share the same YDNA which indicates we will likely find their origins in Wiltshire as well.

The majority of the 33 tests done so far have been from the different Virginia families, W23,25,33,85 etc plus one family from Union Co., SC and we had a good indication from documents in the 1680's that at least the WHITLOCK25 family was connected to the WHITLOCK02H family The Whitlocks of Wokingham, Berkshire. A Whitlock from BC, Canada, a member of the WHITLOCK02H family was tested and it confirmed the Virginia families are connected to the Wokingham families. Part of the WHITLOCK02H family went to Canada in the early 1900's whereas the Virginia families went to America in the 1670's. Their first common ancestor is Richard Whitlock who married Katherine Burchette November 7, 1615 at St. Andrews Holborn, London. This part of the family is all Haplogroup R1b. The next section is the Pitton families. They all seem fairly closely connected and are all Haplogroup R1a. The third group is just two results from the Scotland/Ireland families. One is only the 12 marker test so is hard to compare. Also Haplogroup R1b. The fourth group is from Holland. They matched pretty well with the Whitlocks of Wokingham when they were first tested with a 16 marker test but subsequently the 37 marker tests showed they are not as closely related as we had thought. I have therefore moved them to a separate section. Also Haplogroup R1b The fifth group is "the rest". Results that have not yet matched with anyone. So far all tests except one are Haplogroup “R”, the most common Haplogroup for Europe. There is one result from Haplogroup “I”.

We are already starting to see small sub groups emerging. While they may only share 35 to 36 of 37 markers with the main group, they share the same variances. This indicates they are more closely related to each other than to the main group. Very useful information, genealogically speaking.

DNA research is going to grow and expand over the next few years and new ways to use DNA are being explored. There is already a way to measure the length of matching strings of DNA to estimate the closeness of relationship. The longer the strings of matching DNA the closer the relationship. This autosomal DNA test is based on the concept that you get roughly half your DNA from each parent, roughly one quarter your DNA from each grandparent, roughly one eight your DNA from each great-grandparent etc. Unfortunately to make connections both parties trying to connect using this method will likely have had to do considerable paper research and know a range of family names back 200 to 300 years to be able find the family whose DNA matches.

YDNA 37 marker tests are still relatively expensive and I would like to thank everyone who has participated in this project for sharing their test results. I know as more tests are done the value of this project will grow as will our understanding of the evolution of the name Whitlock and how we came to be using it and its variants as a surname today.
