6^ he Museum of Modern Art West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Circle 5-8900 Cable: Modernart No. 11 FOR IMFEDI.ATE RELEASE T hursday,January 26, 196' The Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art is inaugurating a new series under the overall title "Films in Search of an Audience" to make available to the public films which have not been released commercially or had unduly short runs. The first three in the series are RAVEN'S END, directed by Bo Widerberg, to be shown on January 29 and 30; SALVATORE GIULIANO by Francesco Rosi, on January 31 and February 2; and ALL TEESE WOMEN by Ingmar Bergman, scheduled for screenings on February 3 and U. Willard Van Dyke, Director of the Department of Film, in explaining the purpose of the new series, said, "Until the commercial market can sustain the risk of re leasing or re-releasing these films to the general public, it becomes the responsi bility of institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art to undertake their exhibition. Therefore the Department of Film will, from time to time, offer note-worthy films which merit attention. We hope they will find their audience." RAVEN'S END (KVARTERET KORPEN) (196U), written and directed by Bo Widerberg, was photographed by Jan Lindestrom and produced by Europa Films. The cast includes Thomiry Berggren, Keve HJelm, Eriy Strom, Ingvar Hirdwall and Christina Framback. The film runs for 100 minutes and is in Swedish with English subtitles. It is the story of Anders, a young writer forced to escape from a stifling life in a drab tenement square in Malmo, Sweden, and from an alcoholic father with delusions of grandeur and a mother who must support the family. The film begins with short impressionistic shots of the people and life of Raven's End accompanied by a radio broadcast of the militant commands of Nazi propaganda on May Day, 1936. Going from the general to the specific, Widerberg introduces Anders, his mother and a meddle some neighbor — a construction used throughout the filmj quick long-shots of the neighborhood interspersed with lengthy sequences in medium-shot and close-ups, developing Anders, his father and mother. There are continual suggestions of the threatening political situation, such as a casual remark that there will be "no (more) -2- oranges for Christmas," a radio broadcast of the 1936 Olympic games announcing that Japan is momentarily ahead, and the election in vjhich Anders' mother casts her ballot against Fascism* SALVATORE GIULIANO (196I), directed by Francesco Rosi, was photographed by Gianni Di Venanzo and produced by Lux-"\ajdes-Galatea. Music for the film is by Piero Piccioni, the screenplay by Rosi, Suso Cecchi D'Amico, Enzo Provenzale and Franco Solinas. The cast includes Frank Wolff, Salvo Randone, Federico Cicero and Pietro Cammarata, The 125-minute film is in Italian with English subtitles. SALVATORE GIULIANO is a complex political and social case history of the Mafia of post-war Sicily, Salvatore Giuliano is the deliberately foreshortened, barely seen key figure. The film's flashbacks from July ^, 1950, when the bullet-riddled corpse of Giuliano is found in a sun-drenched courtyard, include the guerilla activities aimed at achieving Sicily's independence; Giuliano's part in them, his banditry and his war against the police following the dissolution of the guerilla ariryi the bloody massacre by Giuliano's peasant followers attending the Communist rally at Portella della Ginestra; and his betrayal by his right-hand man, Gaspare Pisciotta. Interwoven with these flashbacks are details of Giuliano's laying-out and burial, and lengthy scenes describing the trial of his associates at Viterbo. Lastly, the film shows Pisciotta's violent death by poison in jail, and the much later continuation of the vendetta when another Mafia affiliate is liquidated by anonymous gunmen. ALL THESE WOMEN (FOR ATT lOTE TAl/i OM ALLA DES5A KVINMOR) (196[i), directed by Ingmar Bergman, was photographed by Sven Nykvist and produced by Svensk Filmindustri. The screenplay was written by Erland Josephson. The cast includes Jarl Kulle, Eva Dahlbeck, Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson, The dialogue for the 90-minute film is in Swedish; there are English subtitles. ALL THESE WOMEN is about the humiliations of a critic, Cornelius, blocked in ^is efforts to interview Felix, a famous cellist whose biography he is writing. He wanders around Felix's decorative summer residence, struggling through the maze (more) u -3- of women who guard their Ilaestro's privacy. Cornelius, a grotesquely self-conscious poseur, is tormented, teased, shot at, photographed in compromising situations, forced to dress up as a woman, and blown up by fireworks. These humiliations, shot with the techniques of silent comedy to the accompaniment of "Yes, ¥e Have No Bananas," are often funny and sometimes moving. Cornelius never actually sees Felix, but remains trapped by the grotesque surface of life in the chateau. What Cornelius never discovers is that there is harmony underneath, revealed when Felix's presence, or the low note of his cello, brings order to chaos. The three films are shown through the courtesy of director Bo Widerberg (RAVEN'S END), Royal Films International (SALVATORE GIULIANO) and Janus Films (ALL THESE WOMEN). Screenings are daily, except Wednesdays, at 2 and 5:30, Thursdays again at 8 p.m., and Saturdays at 11:30 a.m., 3 and 5:30 p.m. ^ -^ ^(. i>f .;;- ^;, ^f. .;;. .;{. Jt. i>. ^t. .;«. ^j. The theatre debate is viewed against the background of the socio-economic, ideo logical, and cultural development of the 1960,s. After describing conditions at the Municipal Theatre of Göteborg under Mats Johansson's management from 1962 onwards, the study concentrates on analysing three group theatre plays produced by Lennart Hjulström: Flotten (spring 1967) by Kent Andersson, Hemmet (autumn 1967) by Kent Andersson and Bengt Bratt, and Sandlådan (autumn 1968) by Kent Andersson.

Also counts for 7AI, 7SI, 7VI. Instructor: Charles Webel, Ph.D. Delp-Wikinson Chair and Professor, Peace Studies. Roosevelt Hall 253. email: [email protected] Office Hours: Mon/Wed/Fr 1:00-2:20pm, & by appointment Catalog Description The films of Ingmar Bergman offer a range of jumping-off points for some traditional debates in philosophy in areas such as the philosophy of religion, ethics, and value theory more broadly. Bergman’s oeuvre also offers an entry point for a critical examination of existentialism. This course will investigate some of the philosophical questions posed and positions raised in these films within an auteurist framework. We will also examine the legitimacy of the auteurist framework for film criticism and the representational capacity of film for presenting philosophical arguments. Course Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will have: a. Understood a range of philosophical positions within the tradition of Western philosophy in general and the intellectual movement called “existentialism” in particular. b. Engaged in a critical analysis of Bergman’s relationship to existentialism, based on synthesizing individual arguments and positions presented throughout his oeuvre. c. Engaged in critical analyses of various philosophical themes, traditions, and problematics, especially ethics, epistemology, philosophical psychology, and political philosophy. d. Understood arguments for and against the capacity of film to present philosophical arguments, focusing on the films of Ingmar Bergman, as well as selected films by other great directors.

Svensk titel: Ämnesindexering av spelfilm Engelsk titel: Indexing of fiction films Författare: Ulrica Mellteg och Jakob Uddling Kollegium: 2 Färdigställt: 2004 Handledare: Jan Buse Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to examine possibilities concerning subject access to fiction film, i.e. appropriate ways to describe fiction film for subject retrieval. Problems regarding subject indexing in general, and subject indexing of fiction film in particular, are identified, as well as the uniqueness of fiction film and film genres. Four types of subject aspects are discussed: form and genre, fictitious characters, setting, and general topics. Several guidelines, form- and genre lists, and subject headings lists are examined and treated as potential indexing tools. The paper also contains an empirical study of how Bibliotekstjänst, Svenska Filminstitutet and Statens Ljud- och Bildarkiv handle subject access to fiction film. Svenska Filminstitutet’s list of genres for printed material and Kungliga Biblioteket’s list of subject headings, Svenska ämnesord, are considered as useful tools for subject indexing of fiction film in certain Swedish contexts. • Woody Allen Loves Ingmar Bergman Peter Cochran

Woody Allen Loves Ingmar Bergman Peter Cochran

1 Woody Allen loves Ingmar Bergman Peter Cochran Somewhere near the start of Annie Hall , Diane Keaton turns up late for a date at the cinema with Woody Allen, and they miss the credits. He says that, being anal, he has to see a film right through from the very start to the final finish, so it’s no go for that movie – why don’t they go see The Sorrow and the Pity down the road? She objects that the credits would be in Swedish and therefore incomprehensible, but he remains obdurate, so off they go, even though The Sorrow and the Pity is, at over four hours, twice the length of the film they would have seen. The film they would have seen is Ingmar Bergman’s Face to Face , with Liv Ullmann as the mentally-disturbed psychiatrist – you see the poster behind them as they argue. The whole scene is a gesture. Your attention is being drawn to an influence even while that influence is being denied: for, though I don’t believe Bergman has seen too much Allen, Allen has watched all the Bergman there is, several times over. As an example: you don’t often hear Allen’s early comedy Bananas being referred to as Bergman-influenced: but not only does its deranged Fidel Castro-figure proclaim that from now on the official language of the revolutionised country will be Swedish, but in the first reel there’s a straight Bergman parody. We all remember the dream in Wild Strawberries where Isak Borg sees his own funeral on a deserted Swedish street: in Bananas, Allen dreams 2 his own crucifixion on a deserted Manhattan Street.

Men här tillåter admin följande inlägg. Och om det inte bryter mot gruppens regler så verkar det fritt fram att kalla varandra saker som bryter mot ”lagen”..... Se inklistrade inlägg i slutet. Och om detta inte är ”på gränsen” till förtal när man försöker skada en annan persons anseende... med admins goda minne.
