HOME ABOUT US THE JOURNAL MEMBERSHIP ARCHIVE LINKS 8 September 2011 The Controversial Treatments of the Wallace Collection Watteaus Restorers who blunder often present their dramatically altered works as miraculous “recoveries” or “discoveries”. Sometimes they (or their curators) park their handiwork in dark corners pending re-restorations (see the Phillips Collection restoration of Renoir’s “The Luncheon of the Boating Party” and the Louvre’s multi- restoration of Veronese’s “The Pilgrims of Emmaüs”). Here, Dr Selby Whittingham, the Secretary-General of the Watteau Society (and the 2011 winner of ArtWatch International’s Frank Mason Prize – see below), discusses the controversial restorations of Watteau paintings at the Wallace Collection and calls for greater transparency and accountability in the treatment of old masters. Selby Whittingham writes: The Watteau exhibitions held in London 12 March – 5 June 2011 prompted much comment, but little about the condition of the oils at the Wallace Collection [- see endnote 1]. Exceptionally Brian Sewell mentioned their poor state: “both overcleaned and undercleaned, victims of cleaners with Brillo pads and restorers with a taste for gravy.” [2] This was a bit sweeping, but had some justification. In the Watteau Society Bulletin 1985 Sarah Walden contrasted the recent restorations at the Wallace Collection with those at the Louvre and the Above, Fig. 2: Watteau’s “Les charmes de la vie” as reproduced in the Wallace Collection’s 1960 volume of different philosophies behind them [3]. HISTOIRE DES COLLECTIONS NUMISMATIQUES ET DES INSTITUTIONS VOUÉES À LA NUMISMATIQUE Numismatic Collections in Scotland Scotland is fortunate in possessing two major cabinets of international signifi- cance. In addition over 120 other institutions, from large civic museums to smaller provincial ones, hold collections of coins and medals of varying size and impor- tance. 1 The two main collections, the Hunterian held at the University of Glasgow, and the national collection, housed at the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh, nicely complement each other. The former, based on the renowned late 18th centu- ry cabinet of Dr. William Hunter, contains an outstanding collection of Greek and Roman coins as well as important groups of Anglo-Saxon, medieval and later English, and Scottish issues along with a superb holding of medals. The National Museums of Scotland house the largest and most comprehensive group of Scottish coins and medals extant. Each collection now numbers approximately 70,000 speci- mens. The public numismatic collections from the rest of Scotland, though perhaps not so well known, are now recorded to some extent due to a National Audit of the coun- try’s cultural heritage held by museums and galleries carried out by the Scottish Museums Council in 2001 on behalf of the Scottish Government. 2 Coins and Medals was one of 20 collections types included in the questionnaire, asking for location, size and breakdown into badges, banknotes, coins, medals, tokens, and other. Over 12 million objects made up what was termed the Distributed National Collection, of which 3.3% consisted of approximately 68,000 coins and medals in the National Museums concentrated in Edinburgh and 345,000 in the non-nationals throughout the rest of the country. -

THESE PROJECTS ARE SUPPORTED BY THE HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND AND GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL. GLASGOW MUSEUMS’ LENDING POLICY Glasgow Museums is the operating and trading name used by the department that manages Glasgow City Council’s museum collection on behalf of the City of Glasgow. It forms part of the charitable company Culture and Sport, Glasgow (CSG), which also operates under the trading name of ‘Glasgow Life’. Glasgow Museums is committed to providing the widest possible access to the collection. We will consider all requests for loans carefully and respond to them promptly. This Lending Policy explains how loans are administrated, how to apply, who is eligible to borrow, and the conditions that a borrower will be expected to meet in order for a loan to proceed. Management and Administration The management and administration of loans to and from Glasgow Museums is undertaken by the Loans and Touring Section, which sits within the Collections Management department and reports on the matter of loans directly to Glasgow Museums’ Head of Museums and Collections. The Head of Museums and Collections has delegated authority to agree the loan of objects on behalf of Glasgow City Council (GCC) except for those loans identified under the heading of ‘Notification’ (see below) where additional permissions and consents are required. Eligibility A Borrower must be an Accredited (or equivalent) museum or gallery or other public gallery/venue that can meet the necessary lending conditions. -

A well-established provenance links it to the office of the Court of Chancery of the Palatinate of Durham, where de Bury was Bishop from 1334-1345. The chest was bought by William Burrell (1861-1958) in 1941 and came to Glasgow Museums in 1956 as part of the bequest of Burrell’s collection to the city. It is one of the few pieces in Burrell’s collection that had not been restored, possibly because it was bought directly from a private collector, unlike most of the furniture, which came through sale rooms or dealers. Examination in 1966 by the conservators of the Ministry of Public Building and Works revealed that the surface layers on the inner side of the lid were extremely friable with areas of loss and detached fragments. Contact: [email protected] We are hosting a symposium to coincide with the visit of the Chinese ancient bronze project team from Shanghai Museum on Friday 2nd November. Shanghai Museum has an endowment from the National Social Science Fund of China to catalogue all the bronzes in UK collections. The Burrell has more than 170 Chinese ancient bronzes, many of exceptional quality. Chinese bronzes were a significant area of collecting for Sir William Burrell (1861-1958) and he was passionate about spectacular objects with inscriptions from the era of the Shang and the Zhou dynasties (c.a. 1200 to 200 BC). This symposium will explore the meaning of inscriptions cast on ritual bronzes and cultural memory.
