The UNIVERSITY OF ABOUT THE Located in Guelph, Ont., the University of Guelph was established in 1964 and is considered one of Canada’s top universities. Its three founding members – Macdonald Institute, the Agricultural College and the Ontario Veterinary College – are older than the University itself. Established in Toronto in 1862, the Ontario Veterinary College is the oldest veterinary school in Canada. The University now consists of seven colleges: the College of Arts, the College of Biological Science, the College of Business and Economics, the College of Physical and Engineering Science, the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, the Ontario Agricultural College and the Ontario Veterinary College. The University also has a regional campus in Ridgetown, Ont., and several research stations. The University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto offers joint diploma and degree programs that provide students with real- world experience through work placements. The University’s main campus features a blend of historical and modern architecture. Brick pathways connect century-old buildings with steel and glass structures. A bronze statue of the gryphon, the University’s mascot, guards the main entrance to campus at the corner of Gordon Street and Stone Road. The iconic cannon, located in Branion Plaza, is best known for its constantly changing appearance – it’s a campus tradition to paint the cannon on an almost daily basis. With more than 20,000 undergraduate and 2,100 graduate students, the University is consistently ranked highly for providing a comprehensive education that combines traditional academia with experiential learning and co-operative education outside the classroom. Research opportunities allow students to learn and work with faculty who are experts in their field. The University welcomes international students from around the world, while providing study abroad programs for those interested in broadening their global perspective. Guelph’s alumni population continues to grow and now totals more than 101,000 alumni in 145 countries.

5 Guelph Gryphons MIKKEL AAGAARD SIGNS IN GERMANY

OUA Leading Scorer Mikkel Aagaard Signs with Wolfsburg Grizzlys in DEL

From the moment he arrived with the Guelph Gryphons midway though the 2018-19 season, the Gryphs knew they had something special with Mikkel Aagaard. A former team captian of the Danish U20 team, as well as a member of the Denmark national team, Aagaard provided plenty of offence and leadership for Guelph.

However, in what became the biggest story line of the Gryphon’s season, the Guelph captain accepted an offer to join the Wolfsburg Grizzlys of the DEL in Germany shortly after the Gryphons had dropped their opening game of the 2019-20 OUA playoffs. Having led the OUA in points, goals and assists during the regular season, while also leading U SPORTS in goals and finsihing second in U SPORTS total points, Aagaard quickly became a big gap that the Gryphons needed to fill. Trailing the Laurier Golden Hawks in their opening round best of three playoff series 1-0, and now without their captain, the Gryphons came together as a team in an inspiring fashion to win seven of their next eight games en route to hoisting their 7th Queen’s Cup in program history.

Although Aagaard served as the team’s captain, top-line centre and one of their top offensive weapons, the Gryphons have had multiple different players step up since the departure, and they will continue to use everyone on their roster in their attempt to make a run at the U Sports Men’s Hockey Championship.

U SPORTS ALL-CANADIAN BIOS

KEN LOCKETT | 1971-72 One of the premier players to lace up a pair of goalie skates in university hockey, Ken had one of his finest years in the 1971-1972 season. He had a 3.86 goals against average and stopped close to 35 shots per game. He was asked to play for Canada in the World Student Games where he stoned the Russians twice and was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. Ken was team MVP, league MVP, a First Team All-Canadian and Male Athlete of the Year. Following his intercollegiate career he went on to play with San Diego of the WHA and Vancouver Canucks of the NHL.

BRAD PIRIE | 1976-77, 1978-79 The Gryphons first 2-time hockey All-Canadian, Brad put together two amazing seasons while wearing the , black and gold. Although a rather small player to play defence, head coach, Bud Folusewych, used him on the blue line to take full advantage of his play making abilities. He was instrumental in the Gryphons charge to the OUAA Championship in 1978-1979 and in 1976-1977, he was chosen Gryphon Rookie of the Year and winner of the Jack Pos MVP Award. Brad also gained some pro experience with Dallas of the Central League and in 1980 realized a dream ... scoring a goal against the Russians while representing his country in the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid.

ROB ARABSKI 1991-92 Rob a talented second year centre from Brantford, Ontario, was arguably one of the premier players in the nation. His creative abilities on the ice dazzled the fans and awestruck his opponents. He led the Gryphons in scoring with 21 goals, 24 assists and 45 points in 22 games. This great season saw Rob become the OUAA West Division Most Valuable Player, OUAA West Division First Team All-Star and a CIAU All-Cana- dian. Rob was also a former Champion with the Junior “A” Club.

STEVE PERKOVIC 1992-93 Steve anchored the Gryphon defence as the team won the OUAA West Division Championship en route to a berth in the nationals. Steve scored 11 goals and added 31 assists to lead all OUAA defencemen in scoring. He ended the season as the Gryphons 6th leading all-time points leader and his 31 career goals are the most ever by a Gryphon rearguard. A First Team OUAA All-Star for the third straight season, Steve was the Gryphons team captain. He was co-winner of the university’s Athlete of the Year Award in 1993.

TODD WETZEL 1994-95 Perhaps the most feared offensive player in the OUAA, Todd gained the admiration from opposing coaches for his commitment to and excellent defensive play.
