2018-2019

Season Record: 9-15 (4th in the OUA West) Playoff Record: 1-1 (lost to Lakehead in OUA West semi-final)

The Gryphons entered the 2018/19 ready to build on a strong previous year in which they earned home court advantage for the opening round of the OUA playoffs. The 2018-19 campaign proved to be a challenging year as endured a slew of injuries to key players, but the Gryphons, buoyed by the play of OUA All-Star Burke Bechard team highs of 15.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg), veteran guards Skyla Minaker and Sarah Holmes, forward Ivana Vujadinovic, and a cast of young players getting extended minutes because of the injuries, found their legs late in the season. Guelph recaptured its identity by ramping up the defence to finish the season with wins in three of the last four games. The roll continued in the OUA West quarter-final as the Gryphons got 20 points from Bechard to knock of the 62-59 on the road. Guelph then travelled to to take on the in the OUA West semi-final but the hosts eliminated the resilient Gryphons with a tough 79-71 win.

2017-2018

Season Record: 14-10 (4th in the OUA West) Playoff Record: 0-1 (lost to Western OUA playoffs 1st round)

As a veteran coach with decades of experience, Mark Walton has preached a consistent message with his teams – trust in the process. It was no different when he took over a rebuilding Gryphon program in 2016. Guelph’s players came to work last offseason and were ready to go when the OUA schedule began. Key veterans like Sarah Holmes, Hayley Belyk, Quincy Sickles-Jarvis, Megan Brenkel, Ashley Wheeler and Ivana Vujadinovic comprised the core of the team but the Gryphons got a bigger boost than they could have imagined from the arrival of rookie guard tandem Skyla Minaker and Burke Bechard. Guelph certainly took a while to jell, starting the season with three straight losses. But the wins began to pile up and the Gryphons went over .500 after a dominant 71-44 victory over Nipissing on the road in late November. Guelph took a step back losing five of its next six, but a blowout win at Brock was a turning point. The Gryphons established an identity and utilized a blend of suffocating defence and unselfish play at the offensive end to take seven of the last eight games. They welcomed back Holmes from an illness late in the season and the third-year guard went off, providing an offensive spark and deep threat that completed the puzzle. The last game of the season against Western determined whether Guelph would host the Mustangs the following week or travel to London in the first round. The Gryphons went down early but Holmes and Minaker each produced career-highs of 25 and 22 points respectively to help the team clinch home court. The playoff rematch was unfolding the same way with Western’s -hot shooting guiding the visitors to a lead. Guelph again battled back and though Bechard gave her team a one- point margin inside the last minute, the Gryphons could not hang on and were eliminated 72-68 in a heartbreaker. It was the final game for graduating seniors Belyk, Sickles-Jarvis and Brenkel. But as Coach Walton would say, his players would learn from the defeat – and it was part of the process.

The 2016- 17 season also marked the first season in charge for new head coach Mark Walton who was named head coach in July of 2016.

A trio of Gryphons finished the season with double-digit scoring averages as Megan Brenkel (11.8 PPG), Sarah Holmes (11.6 PPG) and Ashley Wheeler (10.3 PPG) all impressed in their first full year as starters. All but one of the players from the 2016-17 roster will be eligible to return for the 2017-18 season, as point guard Samantha Renshaw was the lone senior to be acknowledged on senior night. Renshaw, who also was in her first full season as a starter, enjoyed the best year of her Gryphon career, averaging 7.2 PPG while starting in 16 of the Gryphons 19 regular season contests.

When players, coaches and fans of the Gryphons women's basketball team look back on the 2015-16 season, they will do so with fond memories. For the first time in nearly a decade, the team posted a winning record, qualified for the playoffs and won a postseason game on home court. The Gryphons finished the regular season with an 11-2 record good enough for second in the OUA central division and earned the right to host a first round playoff game. A strong and gritty defence was a main ingredient in the Gryphons success this season as they finished top five in the conference in points allowed per game and steals per game.

In the OUA preliminary round the Gryphons defeated the visiting 69-51 to mark the team’s first postseason win since 2007. In the next round, the Gryphons traveled to the nation’s capital to take on a tough Ottawa Gee-Gee’s team and unfortunately dropped the OUA Quarter-Final game by a score of 55-43.

Three members of the squad were recognized by the OUA. Second-year point guard Bridget Atkinson was named a Second-Team All-Star after finishing the year top 10 in the conference in steals (10) and assists (66) while averaging 11.8 points per game. Kate MacTavish was also named to the Second- Team after leading the Gryphons in scoring with 14.9 points per game, ranking her ninth in the conference and recording a team-high 9.1 rebounds per game. She also led the OUA with an impressive 89.6 free throw percentage. 2014-2015 Regular Season Record: 8-11 (4th in OUA Central) Playoff Record: did not make playoffs

The Gryphons narrowly missed out on an OUA playoff berth in 2014-2015. Guelph finished the regular season with a record of 8-11, but Brock (8-11) finished just ahead of them in third in the OUA Central to claim the final playoff berth in the division (Brock went through thanks to an advantage in point differential in the Badgers/Gryphons head-to-head matchups during the regular season).

It was another impressive season for fourth year forward Katherine MacTavish. In the regular season opener, Kate poured in a career-high 35 points in a win over the . MacTavish finished the 2014-2015 season as the only player in the OUA to average a double-double (16.5 PPG, 10.8 RPG). Kate’s 10.8 rebounds per game ranked her fifth in the CIS. As a result, Kate was named an OUA First Team All-Star for the first time in her career (she was on the OUA Second Team in 2013-2014). Bridget Atkinson earned an OUA Second Team All-Star, OUA Rookie of the Year as well as being named to the All-Rookie Team.

First year point guard Bridget Atkinson became the first Gryphons women’s basketball player to ever be named CIS Rookie of the Year and was a member of the CIS All- Rookie team. Bridget finished third in the OUA in assists (82) while also finishing second on the team in scoring (10.9 PPG). Her 5.3 rebounds per game, seven blocked shots and team-leading 32 steals on the season were a testament to her hard work on the defensive end of the floor.

2001-2002 For the Women’s Basketball Gryphons, the 2001-2002 season was supposed to be a rebuilding year. After losing 5 of their top 7 players from a team that finished 20-1 last season, many people weren't expecting anything from this young team. In quarterfinal action, the Gryphs dropped a 66-61 decision to Waterloo. Leanne Rowthorn, had an impressive season as she was named Second Team All-Canadian, claimed two of the OUA major awards, MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a First Team All-Star selection. 2000-2001 West Division Coach of the Year, Angela Orton, guided her team to an impressive 20-1 record and top spot in the OUA West Division. At the Final Four in St. Catharines, Guelph slipped by Waterloo 63-62 to advance to the final. In the championship game, the Gryphons squared off against McMaster who had handed the Gryphons their only loss in league play and again found themselves on the short side of a 59-56 result and crushed their hopes of qualifying for the CIAU Championships in Alberta. At the Awards Banquet, 5th year guard, Pat Marcello, who ranked 2nd in the country in scoring with 21.4 points per game, was awarded West Division MVP and was selected to the West Division All Star team. Post, Angela Hrkac, top rebounder in the country, joined Marcello as an All Star. With a clean sweep of the major awards for the Gryphs, Leanne Rowthorn was named West Division Rookie of the Year. Pat Marcello was also named a CIAU All-Canadian. 1997-1998 The Women’s Basketball Team returned to the playoffs for a second straight year before losing to eventual league champion, Laurentian, in the first round of the playoffs in Sudbury. The team had an injury riddled preseason, but turned it on during league play. They won eight of their first twelve contests and had a shot at second place going into the final weekend at Lakehead. Pat Marcello was an OUA West Division All Star and was the outstanding performer for the Gryphons in her first full year of play. The team returns a number of players for next season and should once again be contenders in the West Division. 1996-1997 The Women’s Basketball team had their best season in a number of years as they overcame injuries to post an 8-6 league record and advance to the OWIAA Championships in Waterloo. After dropping the first game to eventual champion Toronto the Gryphons won their next two games to finish 5th in the league. Karen Arnott was a 1st Team OWIAA West All-Star and 2nd in the division in scoring. She was also the winner of the CIAU Tracy MacLeod Award given to an athlete who overcomes injury and perseveres to return to the game. Laurie Townshend was named a Tournament All- Star at the OWIAA Championships. The playoff appearance was the first in 6 seasons and Angela Orton earned the OWIAA West Coach of the Year Award. 1993-1994 The Women's Basketball team was very competitive in the OWIAA West Division this season, even though their league record was not a reflection of this. 1992-1993 While the Women's Basketball Team did not qualify for post season competition this very young squad did finish the season on a high note knocking off third place, Brock, in the season finale to finish with a 4-10 mark. Laurie Townshend was selected as the OWIAA West Division Rookie of the Year and was a member of the All Canadian Rookie Team. Most of the squad is back next year and the fortunes could well improve dramatically for this team. 1990-1991 The Women's Basketball team showed the most improvement of perhaps any Gryphon team as they had an overall record of 19-11 and improved their conference mark from 1-13 to 7-7. 1989-1990 The team suffered through a injury racked season that saw their playing ranks reduced to just eight players for a good portion of the regular season. Despite the 1-11 record the silver lining included the development of a lot of younger players who saw additional court time which bodes well for the future. The team were champions of the Gryphon Invitational Tournament in November. 1988-1989 New coach, Angela Orton, took over the team in May and improved the league record to 3-11, but the Gryphons were close in almost every game that they played. Mary Thompson was selected to the OWIAA Second All Star Team and was among the league leaders in scoring. Two of the Gryphon victories were over Laurier and Lakehead, who both qualified for the playoffs. With most of the team returning prospects are much brighter for the 1989-90 season. 1986-1987 The women's basketball team had a year where the close games seemed to go the wrong way and they missed the playoffs in the West Division. Despite this, there were some highlights as they defeated Brock, who went on to the CIAU Tournament and Guelph successfully hosted the OWIAA eight team finals February 27 - March 1. 1985-1986 A couple of hard luck close losses eliminated the Gryphons from the OWIAA title hunt for the first time in recent memory. The 5-7 record was not totally indicative of their play but more a reflection of the improved calibre of the league. The team did manage to win the Queen's Invitational Tournament in early January and the only graduating player, Beth Pulsifer was named a second league All-Star. With most of the team comprised of first and second year players the Gryphons will be back in the playoffs next season. (* Denotes letter winner, ** Denotes first time letter winner). 1984-1985 The women's basketball team just kept getting better and better throughout the season and finished the regular schedule with an 8-4 record. This was good enough for second place in a year which was viewed as a rebuilding campaign. In the OWIAA playoffs the team rebounded from a large halftime deficit to edge York and advance to the semi-finals where they were defeated by eventual champions Toronto Blues. Beth Pulsifer and Jocelyn Laviolette were both named as second team West Division All-Stars. A large nucleus will return next year and Gryphon fortunes should continue to improve.
