2 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR MAY 2013 SHAKESPEARE GILD

Much Ado About Nothing

Performance dates: June 7-9, 13-15, 21 and 22

“Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more, Men were deceivers ever, One foot in sea and one on shore, To one thing constant never.”

One of the most popular and charming of Shakespeare's comedies, Much Ado About Nothing features Benedick, an arrogant and confirmed bachelor, and Beatrice, his favorite sparring partner. While Beatrice and Benedick hide their infatuation beneath witty barbs, young love blossoms as Hero and Claudio race to the altar. When the wicked Don John conspires to break up the wedding, will false accusations and misunderstandings prevent the young couple's happy ending? Witty wordplay, passionate poetry and clever plot twists make for delightful theater.

Rehearsals are in progress under the direction of Mary Catherine Kelley. The cast includes many of our favorite actors from previous shows as well as a number of talented newcomers. Performances are June 7, 8, 13-15, 21 and 22 in the evening, plus a matinee on Sunday, June 9. They take place outdoors at the Frank Stephens Memorial Theatre (a.k.a. the Field Theater) adjacent to the Arden Green. Performances move to the Gild Hall in the event of rain. Reservations open in May at the Arden Club phone line, 302-475-3126. Ticket prices are $10 for general admission, $8 for Arden Club members, and $5 for children 12 and under. For the matinee the tickets are all $5 and no reservations are needed.

Join the Crew

The Gild always welcomes (and needs) new production crew. From parking cars, selling refreshments, and building props to preparing the theater, applying makeup, and more, we have jobs big and small that need doing. To become part of the backstage excitement, contact Laura Wallace at [email protected] or 302 -743-5939 (cell) and she’ll match you up with a job on our crew.

Meetings & Readings

Regular meetings of the Arden Shakespeare Gild are held on the first Wednesday of each month in the Bratten Room of the Lower Gild Hall. The next Gild meeting is May 1. There is no meeting in June because of the play. Meetings resume on July 10 (moved back a week because of the 4th of July holiday).

GEORGIST GILD The Georgist Gild meets on the second Tuesday of each month. Our next meeting will be at 7:30 PM at the BWVC on Tuesday, May 14th.

Look for upcoming Georgist events and classes. The Georgist Gild will hold evening seminars and films related to the land value tax and Henry George. Contact Sadie 475-1745 for more information or to be on the email list.

Evening of Art at the Buzz The Buzz Ware Village Center located at 2119 The Highway, Arden, DE is proud to announce an opening reception for A Painting a Day, featuring watercolors and acrylics by Rosemary Connelly, on Friday evening, May 3, from 6-9 PM. Rosemary Connelly is a water-media artist with a studio in Milford, DE. In 2012, her goal was to paint one small 8x8 painting for each day spent there. Finding inspiration from the things around her - the view out her window, flowers brought by friends, fruits for lunch, etc., she created a collection filled with color and texture. Our May artist will share some of her favorites and a few other surprises. To learn more about Rosemary Connelly and her art visit www.livecheapmakeart.com. Complimentary refreshments and a cash bar are available.

Looking ahead to June, please mark your calendar to stop by the Buzz and enjoy an art exhibit by Jenn Saemann with poetry by Thomas McCaffrey on Friday, June 7, from 6-9 PM.

6 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR MAY 2013 SCHOLARS GILD "Where in the world did that plant come from?"

Discussion – Tuesday evening, May 21 at 7:30 PM in the Lower Gild Hall.

A sense of place? Do natives matter? Since the first days of Europeans setting foot on the Americas humans have been swapping plants (and animals) back and forth across the globe. As one looks at urban and suburban landscapes it can be almost impossible to tell where in the world one is by looking at what is planted around our homes. But does it really matter? That depends on who you are asking -- an ecological scientist or a plant breeder looking for the next new thing.

Come join for a lively discussion on just how important it is to curtail our use of “exotic” plants. Even the scientists have different points of view.

If you are interested in receiving email announcements from the Scholars Gild, please send a request to [email protected], include your name and email address.
