National Chinese Eisteddfod 2017 I personally participated in the 16-18 year old age group (Native Mandarin Speakers) and was very fortunate to place 1st in my group. It was an absolute honour to compete against some outstanding students from across the state. As I stood on the podium, I realised how lucky I was to have this opportunity to learn Chinese and be part of this prestigious competition. Thus, many thanks must go to Ms Zhang who spent countless lunchtimes guiding us and teaching us the poems. Thank you for your guidance and wisdom!

As a student who has participated in the National Chinese Eisteddfod every year since Year 7, this years’ experience was truly the most memorable of them all. Entering my final year of high school, I wanted to participate in as many co-curricular activities possible and the Eisteddfod Program was without a doubt at the top of my to-do list. Every High contestant was able to reach his full potential within this program, and achieved some incredible results for Sydney High.

The National Chinese Eisteddfod is one of the largest To the boys studying Chinese, I would encourage all of annual poetry recital competitions outside China, and you to participate in this program. Finally, I would like to give a huge shoutout to all the boys for making my last year at Sydney High such a memorable one! Hope all of you will keep on working hard and good luck for your future endeavors! Daniel Hu (12T)

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Years 7 and 11 will take place on Tuesday 20 June 2017 3.00pm – 7.00pm

Years 8 and 10 will take place on Monday 26 June 2017 3.00pm – 7.00pm

Booking Interviews with Your Son’s Teachers This year we will again use a web based electronic scheduling system for arranging interviews. This produces better results for all participants, especially more compact time schedules for both parents and teachers. The system works as follows – • On Wednesday 14 June all parents of boys in Year 7 and 11 will be sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at www.edval.com.au/book . • On Tuesday 20 June all parents of boys in Years 8 and 10 will be sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at www.edval.com.au/book .

• This email was/will be sent to the address currently held by the school. If you have not received this email by the following day or, if your email address has changed from what had been previously advised to the school, you should notify the school at [email protected] advising of this. Please indicate your son's name and roll class or date of birth so that the information can be forwarded to you.

• On the Edval website you will see your son’s teachers listed and you will be able to select those with whom you require an interview. (If you hover over a teacher’s name, the subject involved will be shown.) At the same time you can indicate your availability between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

• Once the majority of parents have requested interviews, the overall schedule will be generated by the school and your individual schedule should be available for you to download and print from two days before the interviews.

• Periods will be shortened on the days of the interviews. Boys from all Years will be dismissed from class at 2:35pm each day. School Special buses will run to normal schedules and there will be supervision available in the Junior Quad of boys waiting for these buses.

• Interviews should not exceed five minutes’ duration. If there is insufficient time, a further appointment may be made for a later date, or contact by telephone arranged.

MIC of Football Report For 1st and 2nd XI GPS points ladder please go to: With twelve teams still remaining undefeated there is http://aagps.nsw.edu.au/winter-sports/football/ tight competition for the Dolan Cup. Well done to Adam Masen scoring five goals on Saturday to top the leader Round Two was played against the very tenacious, St board in goals. Ignatius’ College, Riverview. Equal favourites with Newington they were always going to be tough. The 1st XI conceded three goals in the first eight minutes, taking us right out of the game. The boys came back well, but was too big of a deficient to chase down.

Good luck and keep working hard and the results will come. Geoff Tesoriero Jonathan Meng for the 1st XI MIC of Football

Hoping to carry on the winning momentum from the week before, we lifted the intensity of our training sessions throughout the week to a whole new level. With another 11am game, the whole squad was looking forward to another ripper of a game to show off our skill and finesse which as a team we have all worked very hard on.

High Spirit SBHS v’s Riverview Results 13’s 19-20L MOM: Dylan Vo for his consistent breakdown dominance Andy Xu all round performer

14A 12-32L MOM: Colgan outstanding leadership Phan, Vyas, Dimitriadis, Chhabra for great games

15’s 19-15L MOM: Matthew Le for his great game The Saturday showed a mixed array of results in the junior grades with a couple of close games despite missing 16B’s 24-5W (unfinished) players due to cadets. 16s with a wonderful turnout, saw MOM: two victories despite the Bs having an unfinished game Ashley Ow for his deceptive aggression while second grade continued their streak of dominance within the comp with a convincing and easy win. 16A’s 12-0W MOM: Kicking off in first grade, we saw an evenly matched Marcel Chew: For never taking a step backwards contest for ball and territory in the first 10 minutes of the game. With an audience again gathered to watch, spirit 2nd XV: 39-5W and morale was high. Our set piece dominating every MOM: facet of the game, trumping the Riverview forward pack. Ryan Ho-Shon: playmaking with finesse After a period of continued possession and consistent success in the lineouts, it was ironical that one of our 1st XV: 5-15L miss-timed lineouts saw the ball land in the hands of Leo MOM: Li and from 5 metres from the line, saw him cross for the Nirvan Chan Taking control of set piece first try; first blood to High. to push us through Following the restart, our strong attack yet again pressured and tested Iggie’s defence. With more 1st XV Report prominent running throughout the team, we quickly gained metres and yet again pressured the opposition 22. Contrasting the week before, Riverview had showed up to play, with a larger physical presence compared to Shore’s. Harder to bust through and through an unfortunate uncharacteristic pass, the Iggie’s No.7 plucked the ball in mid-air and scored a try, High down 5-7 at half time.

Unfortunately, unable to cross the line in the second half, we had to face a disappointing defeat.

Gaining from this experience, there is still a lot to learn about ourselves. Our defence shined despite our complacency within the Shore game however Riverview was an eye opener for our need to increase our

physicality and intensity especially when we play Joeys Congratulations!! on the hill in two weeks’ time. Nigel Zhang

Team of the Week 2XV The GPS season has started off very well for the 2nd XV, with two wins over Shore and St. Ignatius. The game against St. Ignatius, went much better when looking at the scoreboard, with a 45-5 victory. Matching numbers with 13 a side, we dominated for the whole game, spreading the ball wide to get around their defence. Having gained more players during the week, we swapped most of our team out for the second half. With most of the team in unfamiliar positions we played as best we could, but still dominated the other team. We are looking forward to the rest of the season that continues to be as successful. Talent and hard work has paid off for William Choi who has been chosen to represent CHS U16s rugby. A great result and we wish you all the best!! Mr Cotton MIC of Rugby

2017 could be the most defining year for our national team. Go The Wallabies!
