PORTFOLIO/19 MARIANNE VILLIÈRE

Born in 1989 in Nancy, . Lives and works in France.

My work is focused on developing an approach that questions everyday urban space. It is through observation and the composition of performative postures that I attempt to put the public sphere into play as a shared experience. The collective, creative forms that I employ come out of my experience in cultural mediation, theater, civil disobedience and associative work. My interest in the incongruous has also led me to explore other disciplines, such as microsociology. I use context as a starting point to create unsettling, disruptive situations that inspire reflection on how we live together in a given space. This approach allows for engagement with the rhetoric of specific actions—sculpting and arti- culating select acts with critical intent.

The main focus of my work is to spark debate, generate latent controversial energy, and negotiate alternatives to existing power relations.

Marianne Villière engages in a highly articulate reflection on the artist’s place in society, public space, and the process of legitimation that validates or discredits practices with respect to different value systems. In an extension of the practices of Andrea Fraser—but taking the risk of working outside the field of art—or, perhaps more aptly, Ben Kinmont, Marianne Villière undertakes a subtle interrogation of the instability and random charac- ter of art value systems and cultural systems.

Anti-SDF spaces are mapped, analyzed (commented) and modified to make them vi- sible. Eventually, structures that counteract the existing forms will be installed, forming islets that encourage interaction, offer comfort, and concretely improve people’s reali- ties. _Read more Administrophones

Performances, sonore installation, photo and video documentation 2016/2018 - Montréal, CA - Perouze, , , Nancy, FR , LU - Fès, MA, Genève, CH In collaboration with the sociologist Anthony Pécqueux, With the support of la Maison de la création and the Cinémathèque Grenoble, FR.

The projects making up the Administrophonesseries arose from an unlikely exchange with the administra- tive staff in charge of public space in various French-speaking locations, including Canada, France, Luxem- burg, Morocco and Switzerland. Each began with a telephone call, during which I opened a discussion ai- med at swapping our roles and disrupting the work environment, shifting the imaginative and driving force of the project from the artist to the government official. Each dialogue allowed for moments of complicity between the official and the artist and resulted in a proposal for a public art intervention. > Publication soon at Cartonpâte (Mathieu Tremblin). _ Read more

From Gestures on the Screen to Gestures in the Streets Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights - Revue Multitudes n°65 - 2016.

Chaplin’s ingenious and audacious creativity is analyzed through City Lights’ opening scene, where the actor-filmmaker stages a number of parades and impulses that permu- tate relations of power. The agents’ places are reconfigured through a variety of critical gestures. Conceived as an ode to perturbations extendable to our cities and daily lives, the article invites the reader to pursue actions and interactions questioning the poten- tials of public spaces.
