As the Elected Mayor and the Principal of Tyne Metropolitan College, we are very pleased to present our joint prospectus for adult skills and learning courses in 2014. The quality of what’s on offer to you has never been better. Both the Adult Learning Alliance and Tyne Metropolitan College have been inspected by Ofsted in the last year. Ofsted’s assessment of both organisations is incredibly positive. Each has particular strengths: • Tyne Metropolitan College is recognised for its excellent partnerships which support the local economy. • The Adult Learning Alliance is recognised for its outstanding support for adults who left school with few qualifications and the progress these learners make. One of our aspirations for the borough is to ensure that everyone is supported to achieve their potential – this is one of my pledges to you as the elected Mayor. I’m proud that we have two organisations providing training and learning in the borough of such high quality, with such a commitment to supporting learners and going the extra mile. The award of North East Regional Adult Learner of the Year 2014 for the third year to another North Tyneside learner, John Swanston, and the award of the North East Apprenticeship of the Year to Kier and Tyne Metropolitan College, is testimony to the commitment and dedication of the staff working at Tyne Metropolitan College and the Adult Learning Alliance. Ways to pay

You can pay by credit card, debit card, cheque or in cash. Please make cheques payable to ‘North Tyneside Council’ for Adult Learning Alliance courses or to ‘Tyne Metropolitan College’ for TyneMet courses.

Paying in instalments

For Adult Learning Alliance courses costing over £100, you can pay half on enrolment and the other half two weeks before the course starts. Ask at an enrolment event or phone 0191 643 2288 for details.

For all TyneMet College courses costing over £100, you can pay in three equal instalments, the first being paid at the time of enrolment. Phone 0191 229 5000 for details.

What do I need to bring to claim my full concession or discounted fee? Please supply • self-declaration or benefit award notice letter • Priority ease card (Adult Learning Alliance courses only) • proof of your date of birth (if aged 16–18 ).

Help with Childcare

With nursery facilities available on campus at TyneMet College and some centres offering crèche provision, we can provide the help you may need to get on with your studies. You may be entitled to support with childcare costs. If you need support with childcare costs, please let us know when you enrol.

An advisor at the Adult Learning Alliance or TyneMet College will help you to identify if you qualify for a full concession or a discounted fee.

The Fee Policy defines three fee categories: 1. Full Concession* A full concession entitles a learner to study for free, waiving the course fee and any exam costs. Those eligible for the full concession must be: • aged 19 and over, unemployed and an active work-seeker in receipt of benefit, studying/training up to level 2. This includes English and maths qualifications up to and including GCSE. • aged 16-18 years old (completing a programme of more than two weeks and not studying at any other institution). • aged 19-23 with no qualifications at level 3 (A level equivalent) or above.

2. Discounted Fee for Adult Learning Alliance* A discounted fee entitles a learner to study at a reduced cost. Those eligible for the discounted fee must be aged 19 years or older and: • in receipt of specified benefits (please ask an advisor for further details) • have a disability • be a full or part-time carer.

3. Full Fee Those paying the full fee are not eligible for a full concession or discounted fee. For all courses up to and including level 2 the fee is subsidised by public funding. For courses at level 3 and above residents aged 24 and over pay the full cost of the programme/qualification. * Please note: There are specific eligibility criteria for the full concession and discounted fee and an advisor will be able to take you through these and help identify whether you are eligible.

For TyneMet College courses, discounted fee rate eligibility means: A 15% early bird discount applicable to certain courses if you enrol and pay in full by 31st July 2014. An extra 15% ‘loyalty bonus’ discount may be available for current students progressing onto another Government funded course at the College. In addition, if you earn less than £25,000 per annum, you may be eligible for a fee discount. Speak to a Student Advisor in the Gateway team on 0191 229 5000 for more information.

For TyneMet College courses call: 0191 229 5000 | 11 Advanced Learning Loans

If you are aged 24 or above and interested in studying at level 3 or above, you may not need to pay course fees.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans are similar to Higher Education loans, but have been introduced for Further Education students. The course must be at Level 3 or 4; examples include A Levels, Access to Higher Education, other Diplomas and Certificates.

Repayments don’t start until April 2016 and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £21,000 a year.

To qualify you will need to be: aged 24 or over at the start of your course a resident in the UK for three years prior to the start of the course enrolling on a course at Level 3 or above.

The amount of the loan depends on the type of course you take and how much the fees are. The minimum loan you can get is £300. You don’t have to borrow the full cost of your course – you can pay for some of it yourself.

The loans are not means-tested or credit-checked and any individual who meets the criteria will be able to apply for a loan, whether they’re employed or unemployed. The loan will then be paid directly to the College or training provider on your behalf.

If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme, see page 11, and you progress to complete a Higher Education programme, you will not have to pay back your FE loan at all! How to Apply You will be able to apply online or by post

Volunteer Learning Support Workers work with a tutor to give extra support to our learners.

We have a wide range of English and maths courses available across the borough, for beginners through to GCSE. These courses are designed to help you to improve your English and maths skills and:

prepare for work or getting a job improve your CV, particularly if you left school without a qualification in English or maths advance your career progress to college or university help your children with their school work.

How much do English and maths courses cost? All of our courses are free unless you have a Level 2 qualification in the subject you wish to study. Classes are delivered in small, friendly groups and you will be fully supported to achieve your best and progress onto other courses. All the courses give you the opportunity to gain a qualification.

Will extra support be available to help me learn? A free induction will help us to make sure you go into the best class for you and help you to settle in. We offer support for anyone with additional needs, including dyslexia support.

All Adult Learning Alliance GCSE English and maths courses are free unless you already have a grade C or above in the subject at GCSE.

“If I can do it, you can do it too!” say’s student Dawn Daglish. “I wanted to improve my English and maths and I was really anxious about coming along to my first session. Looking back, I had nothing to worry about. “All of the staff were absolutely amazing and helped me every step of the way. “I think I was a bit scared of looking daft but the teachers put me at ease straight away. I gained Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and Level 2 Functional Skills in English and now I’m working towards my Level 2 in maths. Dawn continued: “As my confidence grew, I decided to study to become a Volunteer Learning Support Worker. I can now give advice to people just like me and I’ve started to support adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. It is so rewarding,I wish I’d done it years ago."!

TyneMet courses TyneMet run English and maths courses throughout the year at different times and venues to suit your work and lifestyle. Each course is broken down into accredited units, so you can build up recognised qualifications as your confidence grows.

If English isn’t your main language and you want to improve your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills, this course is for you.! The teachers are very friendly and supportive and they will help you to gain a nationaly recognised qualification which will help you to work, study and live in the UK. Improving your English will help you to: get a job or a better one access training help your children with homework prepare for the “Life in the UK” test to become a British citizen.

Classes in ESOL entry level 1, 2 and 3 and ESOL Level 1 and 2 start in September but you can enquire any time as we often put on extra sessions to meet demand.

ESOL Level 1: Aminata Seidi ESOL student Aminata Seidi, 38, from Elswick, is now studying on an Access to HE course at TyneMet College in the hope of turning her dream of becoming a nurse into reality. Aminata first started studying ESOL at Entry 2 level in 2011and immediately impressed everyone with her hard work and determination. Runner up as the ‘ESOL Student of the Year’ in 2012 boosted Aminata ‘s confidence and she moved up onto the Entry 3 course. Currently, alongside her HE Access course, she is also studying ESOL Level 1. Despite, being a mum and working part- time, Aminata makes sure that she has enough time for her studies. Once she has successfully completed her two year Access to HE course, Aminata will be able to apply to study a Nursing Degree at university.

"I was offered a job thanks to the Adult Learning Alliance”says student Michael Clark.

“I was made redundant unexpectedly recently and I quickly realised my IT skills needed updating to make my CV stand out from the crowd. I hadn’t been in a classroom since I left school so I was a bit daunted. “The teachers at the Alliance were very supportive and helped me to turn my redundancy into a learning opportunity with huge benefits.” Michael’s learning experience was initially set at two days but he was so productive and enthusiastic, he attended additional sessions each week. Michael continued: “My confidence with technology grew quickly and I began to apply for new jobs. It didn’t take long before I was offered a job at a local firm. It is never too late to learn or re-train. If you’ve been made redundant and need to improve your skills, come along to speak to people like me and meet the teachers. North Tyneside Council Adult Learning Alliance has a range of cookery courses available, including some new ones delivered by our newest tutors Danielle Greenfield and Liz Ratcliffe. Danielle teaches Food Technology by day to the pupils at Longbenton Community College, and in the evening she offers her skills to residents who attend the venue for adult classes. From September she will be offering a range of courses on world foods to expand your knowledge of spices and traditional dishes. Liz joined the Alliance team following a career as a teacher of Home Economics and Food Technology in schools. Liz teaches a range of adult classes and has adapted and created new courses according to the interests of residents. North Tyneside Council Adult Learning Alliance has become even more creative with new courses on offer. Building on the success of our bookbinding programme the offer has now extended to broader heritage crafts. Added to the menu of favourites are new craft courses and workshops to mark the centenary of World War 1. Also starting again this year are classic favourites like collage, acrylic and oil painting, drawing, watercolours, digital photography, jewellery making and pottery. If you are looking for a fun place for your children (8 years plus) to hang out over the school holidays, with loads of organised activities,

TyneMet Holiday Clubs are available during the summer holidays, October half term, February half term and the Easter holidays. There’s a full range of activities on offer, from arts and crafts, to multi-sports, outdoor activities, games and lots more. At just £10 per day (or £40 for the week), it’s excellent value for money. The Holiday Club runs from 10am–4pm. For an additional £5 per day, we offer an early drop-off (8:30am) and late pick-up (5:30pm) option to give you full flexibility. The price includes all activities, which are supervised by qualified staff – as well as materials and equipment – all you have to provide is a packed lunch!

Rebecca Johnston | Study Programme in Construction Rebecca Johnston progressed to the Adult Learning Alliance ‘s construction provision having trained in plastering and tiling at Barnardos and continued in construction training. The course best suited to her was the City and Guilds construction course where she was able to carry out and improve her hand skills in joinery, bricklaying, painting and decorating. Rebecca has now achieved the 6218 Award and progressed onto the Diploma where she has gained these qualifications, and has managed her time and attendance very well given she lives independently. She has very good hand and communication skills and all of the practical tasks she has carried out have been completed to a very high standard, with other students looking to her for help and advice. Rebecca says she has always put her friends before herself which has affected how she has lived her life, but she is learning to focus more on herself and on her own career. She is looking forward to moving into full-time employment at the end of this Fitted Interiors course.

We offer a wide range of courses in different venues to suit the needs of our learners across the borough. Courses are run at different times to meet different needs and delivered by tutors who have hands-on experience of the field you are interested in.

We have a number of courses to enhance your personal and work skills: Counselling Qualifications These qualifications explore the everyday use of counselling skills in life and at work and some of the approaches that underpin the use of these skills. Supporting Teaching and Learning We deliver numerous courses for those wanting to work with and support children and young people in school. These range from Introduction courses for those who have no experience through to Level 3 for those who have experience and wish to gain additional qualifications. Early Years and Youth Work We also offer training for students who are interested in working with children and young people outside a school environment . This includes Childminding, Youth Work and working in an Early Years Setting. Work Based Qualifications We also offer qualifications to enhance your work based skills such as: First Aid at Work Paediatric First Aid Food Safety & Catering

Growing our own Workforce

The Adult Learning Alliance is proud to be growing their own workforce. The courses on offer for work-related training support people into rewarding roles and create opportunities for progression. Learners have successfully moved into roles in various different sections of the Alliance, showing what a positive experience their learning has been.

Teresa Hall | Skills for Work, Life and Families Tutor Teresa Hall started learning with the Adult Learning Alliance seven years ago, becoming a volunteer supporting learners during maths lessons. She then completed the Alliance’s IT qualifications in CLAIT and ECDL course at John Spence Community High School. Teresa progressed with the support of her tutors onto the Alliance’s level 2 and 3 qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning in schools. Teresa says ‘At this point it was suggested that I enrol onto a teacher training course. After doing the first level of the teaching course I was advised to do the Certificate in Education, which was running with the University of Sunderland. Teresa successfully completed her Certificate in Education in 2013 and started looking for teaching jobs. She saw a role teaching Functional Skills with the Adult Learning Alliance and says ‘I was still volunteering at the Alliance when I heard about this job which I fortunately got. Tutors at the Alliance supported me throughout all my studies and helped me achieve my goals’.

Our apprentice training programmes are designed by industry specialists to provide you with the skills that are directly relevant to your business sector. An apprenticeship equips you with theoretical knowledge and practical ‘on-the-job’ experience. Training can be tailored to ensure you develop relevant skills and expertise for your business sector and helps you to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

You are eligible to study on an apprenticeship programme if you are16 years old or over and not in full-time education. We can give you the chance to work for a local employer, so you can “earn as you learn”. But don’t take our word for it, listen to our apprentices!

Dan Gladstone Leisure Apprentice at Whitley Bay Football Club with TyneMet College After leaving college I didn’t really know what I wanted to do other than I wanted to put my knowledge and skills to good use in the sports industry. I saw an advert promoting Apprenticeships in Sport at TyneMet College and here I am. This was an opportunity for me to get on the pay scale ladder whilst still studying and gaining excellent industry specific qualifications. My future goal is to one day manage my own facility.

Laura Clark Childcare Apprenticeship at Battle Hill Children’s Centre with the Adult Learning Alliance aged 20 from Gateshead said, “I successfully gained employment on the scheme at Battle Hill Children’s Centre and started work at the end of January this year. I am getting the valuable hands on experience I need, which will look fantastic to employers on my CV. I’ve also completed my level 2 Apprenticeship with the Adult Learning Alliance, and I’ve progressed to the Advanced level, currently studying on level 3. The Apprenticeships really give you the experience you need to succeed!”
