The film was selected in December 2012 for inclusion in the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress, distinguishing the film as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” A League of Their Own is an uplifting tale of women who pursued their passion for baseball when the opportunity arose. -

Reminder List for Distinguished Achievements During 2012 Reminder List of Productions Eligible for Awards
REMINDER LIST FOR DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENTS DURING 2012 REMINDER LIST OF PRODUCTIONS ELIGIBLE FOR AWARDS All films that have qualified for consideration for 2012 Academy Awards in the non-specialized categories are listed alphabetically by title. Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch members filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for. For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category. Foreign Language films are eligible for awards in other categories provided they meet the requirements of Awards Rules Two and Three. The reminder list is also available online at www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/reminderlist.html A Notes ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER Benjamin Walker. Dominic Cooper. Anthony Mackie. Audra Hampsch Prof. Blake Intro to Film Art 2 November 2013
Audra Hampsch Prof. Blake Intro to Film Art 2 November 2013 Women’s Health magazine targets female athletes who desire to be leaders and competitors in women’s fitness and athletic training. There’s No Crying in Baseball: Female Empowerment in A League of Their Own From 1943 to 1954, females fled the comfort of their own kitchen to dominate the professional baseball league while their husbands were fighting World War II. Historically, this era in our country’s past designates the beginning of female empowerment in athletics.1 In its one hundred and twenty- eight minute span, A League of Their Own—directed by Penny Marshall, starring Tom Hanks— illustrates this development of powerful female figures in sports. This dramatic comedy captures the humble, talented beaut, Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), and her stubborn kid sister, Kit Keller (Lori Petty), as they struggle both on and off the baseball field.2 Dottie was recruited to play in the All- American Girls Professional Baseball League, but refused to try out. Reluctantly, she accepts the invitation only so Kit—who wasn’t invited—could have an opportunity as well. This initial exchange between the sisters highlights their tense relationship that frames the rest of the movie: Kit constantly struggles to live up to Dottie’s talent.3 While in the league, Dottie, Kit, and many other Rockford Peaches such as Doris Murphy (Rosie O’Donnell), “All-the-Way Mae” (Madonna), “Betty Spaghetti” (Tracy Reiner), and Evelyn Gardner (Bitty Schram) struggle to attract support for the AAGPBL due to their tom-boyish personalities and rough-and-tough attitudes. -

I argue that through this impulse, sports films make claims to an historical real, and they can therefore be explored for how they represent the Black sporting body. Though my project focuses primarily on fiction films, I begin by analyzing this impulse in a sports documentary for how it represents the performance and embodiment of the Black sporting body as an historical contestant. I then trace these strategies as they appear in and shape sports in fiction films, ii specifically through narratives of triumph and defeat, dissent, and gendered visibility. -

TALKING WITH BRUCE VILANCH OF WINDY CITY ‘SCROOGE THE VOICE OF CHICAGO’S GAY, LESBIAN, & MARLEY’ BI AND TRANS COMMUNITY SINCE 1985 NOV. 21, 2012 PAGE 26 VOL 28, NO. 7 www.WindyCityMediaGroup.comTIMES Library head talks mission, journey BY ANDREW DAVIS Brian Bannon is the newest commissioner of the Chicago Public Library—and, as WCT’S YOUTH is expected for someone in that position, he is extremely qualified. His immediate SERIES job before coming to Chicago was being chief information officer (CIO) for the San CONTINUES Francisco Public Library, and was previously chief of branches of the same system. He page 21 has also managed Seattle Public Library and even worked for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In a comprehensive interview, the openly gay commissioner (who started March 19) talked about everything from majoring in gay and lesbian studies in the ‘90s to the challenges he faces every day here in the Windy City. Windy City Times: Eight months on the job—so how has it been? Brian Bannon: It’s been great. It’s hasn’t just been eight months on the job—it’s been eight months in Chicago. It’s been a big learning experience, with an accelerated learning of the library and the city. It’s an incredibly welcoming city. It’s been fun and invigorating. Chicago Public Library enjoys a really stellar national reputation among urban librar- ies, so it was a huge honor to become the new commissioner. Chicagoans seem to really love their libraries. I don’t feel like I’m fully here yet; after the first year—the full cycle of seasons, including the budget and nature seasons—I’ll get a better grasp of things.
