Teri most recently appeared in MTM, as well as Church Basement Ladies (The Last Potluck Supper) at The Merry Go Round Playhouse (NY) for the Fingerlakes Musical Theatre Festival. Thanks to my G4 family and my actual family, and thank you all for supporting live theatre. MY STORY Cancer. I hate that word. The fact is, the word cancer strikes a terrifying chord with everyone, and most especially if you've watched it decimate your family. Everyone on my Mother's side had had a cancer diagnosis, three out of five dying from the disease, and my paternal aunt died of breast cancer at 31. I knew all too well about my family history. Cancer had been up close and personal. I had just turned 40, gotten married and was enjoying a particularly busy time in my career on stage. And then my doctor called. My cancer was discovered after a routine mammogram came back abnormal, resulting in a biopsy that revealed DCIS—a noninvasive, early form of breast cancer.

REMINDER LIST FOR DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENTS DURING 2012 REMINDER LIST OF PRODUCTIONS ELIGIBLE FOR AWARDS All films that have qualified for consideration for 2012 Academy Awards in the non-specialized categories are listed alphabetically by title. Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch members filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for. For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category. Foreign Language films are eligible for awards in other categories provided they meet the requirements of Awards Rules Two and Three. The reminder list is also available online at www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/reminderlist.html A Notes ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER Benjamin Walker. Dominic Cooper. Anthony Mackie. • Audra Hampsch Prof. Blake Intro to Film Art 2 November 2013
Audra Hampsch Prof. Blake Intro to Film Art 2 November 2013 Women’s Health magazine targets female athletes who desire to be leaders and competitors in women’s fitness and athletic training. There’s No Crying in Baseball: Female Empowerment in A League of Their Own From 1943 to 1954, females fled the comfort of their own kitchen to dominate the professional baseball league while their husbands were fighting World War II. Historically, this era in our country’s past designates the beginning of female empowerment in athletics.1 In its one hundred and twenty- eight minute span, A League of Their Own—directed by Penny Marshall, starring Tom Hanks— illustrates this development of powerful female figures in sports. This dramatic comedy captures the humble, talented beaut, Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), and her stubborn kid sister, Kit Keller (Lori Petty), as they struggle both on and off the baseball field.2 Dottie was recruited to play in the All- American Girls Professional Baseball League, but refused to try out. Reluctantly, she accepts the invitation only so Kit—who wasn’t invited—could have an opportunity as well. This initial exchange between the sisters highlights their tense relationship that frames the rest of the movie: Kit constantly struggles to live up to Dottie’s talent.3 While in the league, Dottie, Kit, and many other Rockford Peaches such as Doris Murphy (Rosie O’Donnell), “All-the-Way Mae” (Madonna), “Betty Spaghetti” (Tracy Reiner), and Evelyn Gardner (Bitty Schram) struggle to attract support for the AAGPBL due to their tom-boyish personalities and rough-and-tough attitudes.

I argue that through this impulse, sports films make claims to an historical real, and they can therefore be explored for how they represent the Black sporting body. Though my project focuses primarily on fiction films, I begin by analyzing this impulse in a sports documentary for how it represents the performance and embodiment of the Black sporting body as an historical contestant. I then trace these strategies as they appear in and shape sports in fiction films, ii specifically through narratives of triumph and defeat, dissent, and gendered visibility.
