ABSTRACT TRUE CRIME DOES PAY: NARRATIVES OF WRONGDOING IN FILM AND LITERATURE Andrew Burt, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2017 Scott Balcerzak, Director This dissertation examines true crime’s ubiquitous influence on literature, film, and culture. It dissects how true-crime narratives affect crime fiction and film, questioning how America’s continual obsession with crime underscores the interplay between true crime narratives and their fictional equivalents. Throughout the 20th century, these stories represent key political and social undercurrents such as movements in religious conservatism, issues of ethnic and racial identity, and developing discourses of psychology. While generally underexplored in discussions of true crime and crime fiction, these currents show consistent shifts from a liberal rehabilitative to a conservative punitive form of crime prevention and provide a new way to consider these undercurrents as culturally-engaged genre directives. I track these histories through representative, seminal texts, such as Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy (1925), W.R. Burnett’s Little Caesar (1929, Jim Thompson’s The Killer Inside Me (1952), and Barry Michael Cooper’s 1980s new journalism pieces on the crack epidemic and early hip hop for the Village Voice, examining how basic crime narratives develop through cultural changes. In turn, this dissertation examines film adaptations of these narratives as well, including George Stevens’ A Place in the Sun (1951), Larry Cohen’s Black Caesar (1972), Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me (2010), and Mario Van Peeble’s New Jack City (1991), accounting for how the medium changes the crime narrative. In doing so, I examine true crime’s enduring resonance on crime narratives by charting the influence of commonly overlooked early narratives, such as execution sermons and murder ballads.

Casting and Caste-ing: Reconciling Artistic Freedom and Antidiscrimination Norms Russell K. Robinsont INTRODUCTION Imagine the prototypical young starving artist working on a novel that he hopes will flower into his masterpiece. Scraping by with a mundane day job, he uses his evenings and every spare moment plotting the storyline, crafting the language and sculpting his characters with great care and deliberation. Suppose he sets the story in a Civil War battlefield, a contemporary corporate boardroom or a police force, and all of the primary characters are white males. If the government attempted to apply an antidiscrimination law to force the artist to include female characters and people of color, it would strike most people as bizarre. The state's interest in infusing an abstract and personal piece of fiction with more diverse representations appears rather weak, if not wholly antithetical to the First Amendment,' and the intrusion on artistic integrity appears extreme. But now imagine that the writer turns the story into a script and, through an agent, sells it to movie studio Twentieth Century Fox. Bullish on the writer's script, Fox sets the budget at $100 million, casts the film with white male actors, as specified in the script, and pays the star (say, Tom Hanks) $25 million. Now envision that writers replicate this same Copyright © 2007 California Law Review, Inc. California Law Review, Inc. (CLR) is a California nonprofit corporation. • Relative Stranger’
‘RELATIVE STRANGER’ CAST BIOS MISS CICELY TYSON (Pearl) – Cicely Tyson’s life and career tell a story of personal excellence and profound choices. She is perhaps best known for her performances in roles that not only challenge universal stereotypes, but also raise the consciousness of audiences to our common humanity. This she consciously set out to do in groundbreaking award winning films and television dramas. In 1962, she became the first black actress to co-star in a television drama series, “East Side – West Side.” It was in the role of George C. Scott’s secretary, Jane, that Ms. Tyson set the “natural trend,” by daring to wear her hair in its natural state and, in so doing, challenging the soul of African Americans to recognize the beauty in their own hair. In the role of Rebecca, her character in the feature film “Sounder,” for which she received an Oscar nomination, she once again validated African American beauty by wearing her hair in cornrow fashion. A gifted actress, she represents success without compromise. She has been noted as being serious, soul stirring, powerful and majestic with extraordinary range. Over the span of her career, she has defied stereotypes. She sets standards and makes others rise to them. She is self-assured, knowing, and perceptive and has been credited by critics as having helped to shape and elevate an entire generation. All of these attributes have led to her award-winning career. Ms. Tyson has received numerous Emmy nominations and received an Emmy for her performance in the role of Castalia in “The Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All,” an Ace award for the TV docudrama on Watts, “Heatwave,” and holds an unprecedented two Emmys for her performance as Jane, the title character in “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.” Among some of her other awarded films are, “A Woman Called Moses,” “The Marva Collins Story,” “The Woman of Brewster Place,” “Blessed Assurance,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “King,” “Mama Flora’s Family” and “A Lesson Before Dying,” based on the novel written by Ernest Gaines.

I argue that through this impulse, sports films make claims to an historical real, and they can therefore be explored for how they represent the Black sporting body. Though my project focuses primarily on fiction films, I begin by analyzing this impulse in a sports documentary for how it represents the performance and embodiment of the Black sporting body as an historical contestant. I then trace these strategies as they appear in and shape sports in fiction films, ii specifically through narratives of triumph and defeat, dissent, and gendered visibility.
