Sagamore of the Wabash by Jeffrey Graf Reference Services Department Herman B Wells Library Indiana University Libraries - Bloomington The French Republic rewards merit most notably with grades of membership in the Legion of Honor, originally created by Napoleon for worthies of his empire. In Britain the sovereign can choose from a range of honors to acknowledge service or accomplishment. Although the Most Noble Order of the Garter is reserved for the happy few, a simple knighthood might be an appropriate reward. Within the royal gift, too, is recognition in the form of a life peerage or even av hereditary title. On the other side of the Atlantic the American president has available the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor. In case a potential honoree does not quite measure up to that distinction, there is a second-highest civilian honor, the Presidential Citizen’s Medal. Not to be outdone by the executive branch, the Congress created the Congressional Gold Medal, its highest award. Like nations, professional societies, institutes, universities, associations, businesses, museums, clubs, fraternal groups, and other organizations pay tribute to the meritorious. Such entities, devoted to all kinds of endeavor from the fine arts to professional sports, present scrolls, plaques, medals, trophies, certificates, keys to the city and other tokens of esteem to their laureates. County fairs award blue ribbons; the Kennel Club chooses Best in Show. Athletes compete for the gold and silver and bronze or the Stanley and Davis and Ryder cups. For mathematicians there is the Fields Medal; in the same intellectual realm, there are the Nobel Prizes.

  • Learning to Work in White Spaces: an Autoethnographic and Linguistic Analysis of Racial and Gender Discrimination in a Midwestern American Organization
LEARNING TO WORK IN WHITE SPACES: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF RACIAL AND GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN A MIDWESTERN AMERICAN ORGANIZATION BY JEREMY WILLIAM BOHONOS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Human Resource Education with a concentration in Human Resource Development in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor K. Peter Kuchinke, Chair Professor Assata Zerai, Director of Research Associate Professor Yoon Pak Assistant Professor Jennifer Davis ABSTRACT Pairing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of a prominent talk radio program with workplace autoethnography, this dissertation explores life and language in a construction-sector business staffed almost entirely by White men. The multi-method approach facilitates intersectional analysis of racist, sexist, and homophobic talk while also attending to issues of class. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project would not have been possible without the support of my academic mentors and family. I am grateful to Assata Zerai, Peter Kuchinke, Yoon Pak, and Jenny Davis for their careful reading of my drafts and their thoughtful feedback. I benefited greatly from having such an intellectually and methodically diverse committee. I am especially grateful to Dr. Zerai for taking me on as a mentee from outside her department and for thoughtfully guiding me as I developed an intellectual framework to support my emerging voice as a researcher. I am similarly grateful to Dr. Kuchinke for encouraging me to explore methods, theories, and topics that pushed the boundaries of Human Resource Development. This project would have never taken shape if Khaula Murtadha had not impressed upon me the importance of connecting personal reflexivity to research and social justice action.

  • No Game for Boys to Play Debating the Safety of Youth Football, 1945-2015
No Game for Boys to Play Debating the Safety of Youth Football, 1945-2015 Kathleen Elizabeth Bachynski Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Kathleen Elizabeth Bachynski All rights reserved ABSTRACT No Game for Boys to Play: Debating the Safety of Youth Football, 1945-2015 Kathleen Elizabeth Bachynski Tackle football has been one of the most popular sports for boys in the United States since the mid-twentieth century. This dissertation examines how debates over the safety of football for children at the high school level and younger have changed from 1945 through the present. After World War II, the expansion of youth tackle football leagues, particularly for pre- pubescent children, fostered a new range of medical and educational concerns. Yet calls for limits on tackle football were largely obscured by the political and social culture of the Cold War, including beliefs about violence, masculinity, and competition. A broad range of groups and individuals were involved in debating the safety of youth football throughout the remainder of the twentieth and early twenty-first century. These groups included doctors, coaches, educators, lawyers, engineers, parents, athletes, journalists, and sporting goods manufacturers. Their arguments over the risks and benefits of youth football involved not only the sport’s effects on physical health, but also on social and emotional well- being. By the 1970s, researchers were applying injury epidemiology methods to studying key mechanisms involved in football injuries, while a broader consumer product safety movement contributed to the development of the first football helmet standards.
