Pennway Church of God Pennway Church of God 1101 East Cavanaugh Road Lansing, MI 48910 May 24, 2020 -Change Our World (Week 6)- “Ministry” OUR MISSION To help people know and grow closer to Jesus. OUR VISION The people of Pennway mobilized by God’s power to help transform people into fully committed, multiplying followers of Jesus. -Change Our World (Week 6)- “Ministry” Acts 6 For the church to change our world it will take more than a few people finding their ministry. The whole body of Christ has a ministry. As we each find that ministry, the church is effective. The role of the pastor 1. To lead the church 2. To minister the word of God 3. To pray for the church 4. To help others discover their ministry and be released into it (Ephesians 4:11-13) The role of other leaders in the church 1. To be full of the Holy Spirit 2. To be full of wisdom 3. To assume the role they are called to do with the support of the whole church 4. To help lead the ministries to the people The role of everyone – all of us are ministers! 1. To go to the people full of grace and power 2. To show God’s love and concern for the people so that they see God in us. 3. To bring wonders and signs to the people 4. To speak God’s word and wisdom 5. To stand in the face of opposition 6. To see the number of disciples increase and people become obedient to the faith. Memorial Day This year, Memorial Day will be celebrated differently: Parades have been canceled; Family gatherings will be smaller; Thoughts of recreation and kicking off the summer will be tempered by physical distancing. As we adjust our expectations to this reality, we have an opportunity to spend some time reflecting on who we as a Nation are memorializing. The story of the United States is the story of a people’s quest for freedom and the human cost of establishing the “land of the free.” When we see the flags placed in honor of the fallen, our hearts swell with gratitude for the selfless sacrifice of those “who more than self their country loved.” Jesus told His disciples that to lay down one’s life for his or her friends is the most significant expression of love. Through the centuries, the men and women of the US Armed Forces paid the ultimate price to keep our country free. So, too, the Son of God laid down His life to secure our eternal freedom. Freedom from sin. Freedom from guilt. Freedom from fear. Freedom to serve Him. As the Church in these United States, we are the children of God who happen to be free citizens of this country. For as long as God continues to bless our Nation with freedom, let us use well the time we have to be His witnesses in the world. This Memorial Day, let us offer up prayers: Prayers of thanksgiving for the blessing of a free country; Prayers of intercession for the surviving families of the ones who gave all; Prayers of petition for the protection of all who today serve our country. - The Pastoral Staff To watch our Worship Service LIVE online visit us on one of these streaming websites: facebook.com/pennwaychurch pennway.org/live-stream pennway.online.church or Youtube LIVE at Pennway Church Our Worship Service begins at 10:30am. • Sparrow Records Discography
Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. • Ichthus Music Festival in Its Later Years Was to Reach out and Share the Gospel Message to Young People Through Contemporary Christian Music
The Asbury Journal 75/2: 288-326 © 2020 Asbury Theological Seminary DOI: 10.7252/Journal.02.2020F.08 of Christian Music Comes to Wilmore It was the “dawning of the Age of Aquarius” as the 1967 musical Hair told us.1 The hippie and New Age Movements were in the ascendancy. The U.S. was in the middle of the Vietnam War. In 1969, it seemed like the counterculture exploded when on August 15-18 the Woodstock Music Festival was held near White Lake, New York. Political and cultural shifts were occurring at a breath-taking pace, and the evangelical church seemed remained isolated from much of this cultural change. Yet while cut off from much of what was going on in the U.S. culturally in 1970, an idea emerged, led by students (called the Christian Service Brotherhood) and their faculty advisor, Dr. Bob Lyon of Asbury Theological Seminary, of a Christian music festival as a counterpoint to Woodstock. Using the Wilmore campground, was established. It would continue as one of the major Christian music festivals in the U.S. until 2012, for 42 years, and would be called by at least one writer, the “granddaddy” of all Christian music festivals.2 Music plays a crucial role in youth culture, and rock and roll has within the context of the United States. While rock and roll partially grew out of gospel music, it took its own secular form of development and so was often actively opposed by many conservative Christians. As the academic study of Christian music has pointed out, The dilemma for Christian adolescents then is clear.

  • Music That Glorifies God
MUSIC THAT GLORIFIES GOD 2 Peter 2:1-3 “… there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. “And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. “And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you …” “… The most brutal, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my misfortune to hear – naturally, I refer to the bulk of rock and roll. It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people. It smells phony and false. It is sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons and, by means of its almost imbecilic reiterations and sly – lewd – in plain fact, dirty lyrics, and, as I said before, it manages to be the martial music of the earth. This rancid aphrodisiac I deplore … .” The above is not a quote from a fundamentalist preacher, but from old “blue eyes” himself, Frank Sinatra, in an article written during the fifties and quoted in the Detroit Free Press (April 18, 1987). Since that time the rock genre has become the dominant musical force in American culture. Without question rock is nearly synonymous with the youth culture. Professor Allan Bloom of the University of Chicago sums it up in his best-seller The Closing of The American Mind: “Though students do not have books, they most emphatically do have music. Nothing is more singular about this generation than its addiction to music.

NOT AN EVENT. A MOVEMENT. MAY 17–20, 2018 NASHVILLE, TN MEET THE SPEAKERS AND MENTORS CLICK PROFILE PICTURES FOR MORE INFO 2 TED BRUUN’s story really begins in a doctor’s office over 25 years ago. Having fallen over 70 feet (seven stories) from a coastal precipice, landing headfirst on the sharp jagged rocks below, and still surviving, Ted listened as the Doctor told him that he had “no explanation” for how he had not been killed by the fall. It was in that moment that Ted (an insecure and “at risk” youth who had been raised by a single mother who had put him in private school and forced him to go to church) remembers knowing 2 things for sure: 1- that he was alive because a very REAL God had saved him, and 2- if this God wanted his life that bad, He could have it. From that point on, Ted says that he has tried to live his life according to the Calling that God placed on his life. In the more than 25 years that have passed since the life changing epiphany that came with his fall from a cliff, Ted has felt God develop a passion in him for the counter culture, the people that would never normally be reached by traditional outreach methods. As the Founder and Executive Director of The Reach Alliance, the parent ministry for The Extreme Tour, Stitch’s Cultural Project, and The Objective, Ted has worked with his team to develop effective, creative, and cutting edge strategies for outreach in this new millennium.
