With new rhythm section Breck Smith (bass) and Dave Schiller (drums) having been enlisted to tour in support of 1988's The Eyes of Time, Las Vegas outfit APOCRYPHA—completed by guitarists Tony Fredianelli and Chip Chrovian with vocalist Steve Plocica—eventually regrouped to work on what would become the quintet's final album for Shrapnel Records: Area 54. There couldn't have been a better choice to start the series than BLUDGEON from Wisconsin. Little is known about this obscure combo (soon to be remedied from the band story published in the booklet) and mot much is available on the world wide web either. We gathered everything they have ever recorded, which is a 7-track demo from 1984 and a live show, broadcast on WQFM local radio station (again from 1984). Recordings are rough and the time has not been kind to the tapes, but it is what it is - a remnant from a glorious past. A treat for all those initiated diehard fans that can see through the sonic limitations and enjoy the timeless piece of heavy metal music history hidden within. For Fans of Black Sabbath, Lord Vicar, Ogre, Grand Magus, Electric Wizard, Witchcraft CANVAS SOLARIS – Chromosphere (US PROG/TECH/THRASH METAL INSTRUMENTAL) - 14 Divebomb Records 2021 – Brandnew US Prog / TechThrash Metal Instrumental For Fans of Watchtower, Scale The Summit, Coroner, Mekong Delta, Pestilence Following the release of their fifth album, Irradiance, instrumental progressive metal songsmiths CANVAS SOLARIS quietly disbanded in 2010. The quartet regrouped in 2014 and began forming compositions that would eventually make up album #6, but various personal roadblocks stalled momentum for more than a year. Activities finally resumed in 2016, and the band completed writing six songs/50 minutes of new material: Chromosphere. However, due to a combination of logistics, personal obligations, and time constraints, the group took its time to record and mix the tracks at various studios over the course of the three years that followed. Drums were laid down with Jamie King Audio in April of 2017, while guitars and bass were tracked at Chris Rushing's and Gael Pirlot's home studios throughout 2018 and 2019. Additional percussion and acoustic guitars were recorded with the help of friend Justin Prevatt in 2019, and programming/synthesizers were largely completed at guitarist Nathan Sapp's house. CANVAS SOLARIS then returned to the patient and generous Jamie King Audio in the summer of 2019 to commence the mixing process. Speaking to Chromosphere's direction, drummer Hunter Ginn states, "When we started down the path of making a new album, Nathan and I knew that we wanted to apply more focus to the songwriting, so we turned to inspiration from late-'80s/early-'90s progressive and technical thrash bands like Toxik, Realm, Watchtower, Mekong Delta, Target, Coroner, Deathrow, Anacrusis, Believer, Obliveon, and Sadus to provide us with a deep reservoir of ideas. Chromosphere doesn't exactly come across as sounding like those bands, but I would like to think that at least CANVAS SOLARIS shares with them some DNA." As the group's four-album run with the highly respected and prog-minded Sensory record label had come to an amicable conclusion, CANVAS SOLARIS entertained the idea of self-releasing Chromosphere, but ultimately decided otherwise. It was at that point that the band full-circled back to where it all began—as Divebomb's parent label, Tribunal Records, handled the group's initial releases in the early-2000s. Ginn reflects, "In the years between our debut full-length, Sublimation, and Chromosphere, Tribunal had launched Divebomb Records, and it only gilded the lily that Divebomb had reissued some of our favorite albums. It really does feel like a homecoming for us. Tribunal Records founder Matt Rudzinski was one of our very earliest supporters, and believed in our music when hardly anyone else did. We're very grateful for the opportunity to work with him again." With Chromosphere, CANVAS SOLARIS has very much succeeded in delivering intricate, high-level progressive metal boasting a finely crafted approach to songwriting that emphasizes movement and atmosphere over endless displays of technical musicianship. Hunter closes with, "I don't think this is the record that anyone expected us to make. After a 10-year absence, most listeners probably would have bet on a mellower, more cosmic CANVAS SOLARIS album. While Chromosphere has no shortage of cosmic moments, we have never made a more aggressive, determined-sounding album..." However, New Mexico had a thriving heavy metal scene in the 1980s and into the 1990s. More specifically, there were many Christian metal bands that came out of the scene including Cross (heavy metal), Rapture (heavy metal), Conviction (hard rock), Angelic Force (heavy metal), The Moshketeers (thrash), Extraction (death/thrash), Ultimatum (thrash) and Combat Faith. Formed in 1986, Combat Faith was formed by guitarist Ric Buteau and vocalist Albert Baca with drummer Alan Tuma joining the ranks shortly after. Combat Faith formed with a passion to play heavy metal and to share their faith. The band played locally as much as they could including opening for national acts like Whitecross, Vengeance Rising, X-Sinner, The Crucified and many others. In 1989, the band recorded their first demo and continued to fill halls around New Mexico with their powerhouse sound. The band finally began recording their first full length, 10-track album in 1989 which was never officially released. Only 4 tracks were released on cassette tape to shop to labels. Unfortunately, over the decades some of those recordings were lost, but six tracks from those sessions were retrieved for this CD. Roxx Records has also added the 1989 4-track demo to this CD to make a 10-track album titled In Your Face. The album is also released as a tribute to founder Ric Buteau who went home to the Lord in 2016. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

I'm not sure how, as I was heavily into the early death metal scene; I know I had Visions of Misery when it came out in 1992. This one slipped by me until later in the 1990's, when I went on a mad Sadus kick for a while and tracked down the old albums. Swallowed In Black was Sadus' big label debut (Roadrunner) and was a marked improvement over their first album and the demos. All the pieces were in place for this one... Rob Moore and Darren Travis brought truckloads of technical, thrashing death riffs and solos that make your face go all melty, Jon Allen's drumming was at full boil, and Steve DiGiorgio's bass playing was actually audible (and incredible, as the world would soon find out... it wasn't long after this album was released that Steve did the "Human" album with Death). What's all this, then? Listen to the second song, "Man Infestation", and notice the shift at the 2:20 mark. That's classic death-thrash. We've heard so much of this since the early 1990's that it's hard to be objective and it sounds a bit dated.

    Jenna Miller 2/22/12 Megadeth Megadeth has been a very popular thrash metal band for over 20 years. The bands, like most others, have gone through many conflicts. Unlike other bands though, Megadeth has stayed strong since the 80’s and has impacted the heavy metal culture. Megadeth has successfully released thirteen albums, which attracted both underground and mainstream fans. They also have accompanied what popular trends into their songs, which resulted in keeping the band steady and popular throughout the years. The start of the band was back in the 1980’s, where Dave Mustaine (lead singer and guitarist) joined the band Metallica in 1982. Mustaine had a drug and alcohol addiction which made him difficult to get along with. In March of 1983, his constant disagreements with vocalist, James Hetfield, caused him to get kicked out. In the summer, Mustaine meets bassist David Ellefson, and they form Megadeth with guitarist Greg Handevidt and drummer Dijon Carruthers. Because of the unorganized nature of the band and constant bickering between band members, the lineup has constantly changed throughout the years. Many believe Mustaine’s drug and alcohol addiction is to blame for this because of his constant highs and lows in his mood. The only two members, Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson, were in Megadeth when the band first started and are still currently in the 2012 line up. Megadeth's first three gigs where February 15th, 18th, and 19th, of 1984. In May of 1985, Megadeth’s first album, “Killing is My Business…And Business is Good!” was released.

Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.

For the sake of concision, the focus throughout this thesis will mainly be on death metal and black metal – two of the most popular subgenres categorized under the umbrella of extreme metal. Each chapter is a comparative analysis of death metal and black metal from different perspectives. Thus, Chapter One is historical account of extreme metal but also includes discussions pertaining to iconography and pitch syntax. Subsequently, Chapter Two concerns itself with the conception of timbre in death metal and black metal. More specifically, timbre will be discussed in the context of sound production as well as timbre derived from performance, in particular, vocal distortion. The conception of rhythm/meter will be discussed in Chapter Three which will simultaneously allow for a discussion of the fluidity of genre boundaries between death metal and progressive metal – largely because of the importance placed on rhythm by the latter subgenre. Instead of a focus on musical practices, Chapter Four will instead take a sociological approach with the aim of answering certain issues raised in the first three chapters. Ultimately, this thesis aims to elucidate two questions: What are the different aesthetic intentions between practitioners of death metal and black metal? And, how do fans conceptualize these aesthetic differences? Sarah Thornton’s notion of subcultural capital – which is derived from Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of cultural capital – will help to answer such questions.

And in a way we had, starting from scratch to a full service publication some 140 stations deep. But in the 12 months since, it has become readily apparent that we were barely walking then. We've extended our reporter roster well past the 200 mark; Our New Alternative and Hard Rock sections have inspired numerous imitators, and our combi- nation of high technology and people power has effectively re -defined what a tip sheet can and will be in the years to come.
