  • Notices on the Geohgy of the North Coast of the Counties of Mayo and Sligo in Ireland. by ARCHDEACON VERSCHOYLE, M
Downloaded from http://trn.lyellcollection.org/ at Indiana University Libraries on May 11, 2015 [ 149 ] XI.—Notices on the Geohgy of the North Coast of the Counties of Mayo and Sligo in Ireland. BY ARCHDEACON VERSCHOYLE, M.A. Communicated by RODERICK IMPEY MURCHISON, Esq., P.G.S. [Read November 7 & 21, 1832.] THE country I propose to describe, comprises the northern districts of Mayo and Sligo. In constructing the map*, I have used for the former county, the excellent map of Mr. Bald, some fishery charts by Nimmo, and some local surveys; and for Sligo, a corrected copy of Larkin's Map. In connecting the two counties, I have used triangles resulting from the operations of the Ordnance Survey, most liberally communicated by Captain Portlock, with the permission of Colonel Colby; and where doubts and deficiencies in the details occurred, observations were made with a three-inch sextant, or Kater's Compass. The drawings (pp. 158. 162. 165. 167.) are from sketches taken on the spot, with every determination to sacrifice picturesque effect to accuracy. The only notice which has been published respecting this part of Con- naught, is a short but very able and accurate sketch in Mr. Griffith's paper on its Bogs, attached to the 4th Report of the Commissioners. The Ox mountain ridge extends through the district from south-west to north-east. It is chiefly formed of mica slate, hornblende slate, gneiss, and quartz rock, the strata dipping rapidly to the south. At the base occurs a conglomerate, alternating with sandstone and slate clay; and overlaid by the carboniferous limestone, which extends westward from Sligo to the Nefin group.

The Famine in Mayo 1845-1850 A Mayo County Library Exhibition 1 Charles Edward Trevelyan, Assistant Secretary to the Treasury directed government relief measures during the famine, meticulously scrutinising all expenditure The Famine in Mayo 1845 - 1850 The Great Famine was one of the defining moments of Irish history. It marked a watershed in the history of the country causing a change so complete in the Irish social and economic fabric, that the people’s sensibilities would never be the same again. No longer could the Irish people trust to the land to provide constant sustenance. No longer could they rely on whatever security of tenure was allowed by the landlords, and more importantly they learned that their English political masters cared little for their plight. The Famine in Mayo is a portrait of the lives and deaths of the people as recorded by witnesses in books, newspapers and official records of that period. 1(a) The Famine in Mayo 1845 - 1850 The Potato Disease e first reports of blight appeared in September of 1845. For one third of the country’s population of eight million, the nutritious lumper potato was pratically the sole article of the diet. In County Mayo, it was estimated that nine tenths of the population depended on it. An acre and a half of land could provide enough potatoes to support a family for most of the year. Any other crops or animals the smallholder raised went to pay rent. A potato famine was a great calamity. Despite the existence of fairly sophisticated central planning machinery in Ireland and an active desire for reformon the part of the government (with an explicit policy on school location, buildings, curriculum, etc.), the school networks in the County still remain largely outdated and ill-adapted to modern circumstances. This situation results in costly under utilization of resources,a lack of equality of educational opportunity and supply, and inadequate pedagogical provision. The County is highlighted geographically and placed comparatively in the Irish context under the headings of demography, economic and social background, and educational system. Profiles of the school networks are given, and an analysis anda diagnosis are made of the first and second levels respectively. Internal comparative analysis by catchment area is made separately for the two levels under enrollment, transport, teaching staff, curriculum, physical facilities, costs, and financing.
