Bedeutung Thirlwall bedeutet soviel wie "Mauerdurchschlupf". Diesen Namen hatte sich die ansässige Herrschaftsfamilie gegeben. Vermutlich wegen des Bezugs zum nahe gelegenen Hadrians Wall aus römischer Zeit. Der Wall diente als praktischer Steinbruch für sauber gearbeitete Sandstein-Blöcke zur Errichtung des Burgturms. Lage Auf einem Hügel in einer Schleife des Bachs Tipalt Burn. Die Burg wird von mehreren Anhöhen überragt, von denen aus Feinde frühzeitig zu sehen waren. Nutzung keine Bau/Zustand Ruine Typologie Tower House Sehenswert Imposanter Rest eines großen Wohnturms mit 2,5 bis 3 Meter dicken Mauern, teils in den Mauern verlaufenden Treppengängen und einem noch erkennbaren Kellerverließ im Nordost-Turm. Interessant ist der asymetrische Grundriss des Wohnturms mit einem leicht vorspringenden Nordost-Turm und dem Rest eines an der Südwest-Ecke hinausragenden Turms, der das Eingangstor schützte. Die Burg wird überwiegen aus Sandsteinblöcken erbaut, die von den Überresten des nahegelegenen römischen Hadrians Walls geplündert wurden. Die Burg steht an keiner natürlichen Verteidigungsposition ist aber von einigen Anhöhen umgeben, von denen Angreifer frühzeitig entdeckt werden konnten Die Thirlwall-Familie nutzte dieses Anwesen für über 300 Jahre, allerdings vermutlich nicht als Hauptwohnsitz, zu Angriffen kam es nicht. 1542 Die Burg wird urkundlich als "in gutem Zustand" erwähnt. 1748 ie Thirlwalls verkaufen ihre Burg und Ländereien für 4000 Pfund an die Grafen von Carlisle, die sich hauptsächlich für das Weideland interessieren. Die Burg wird dem Verfall Preis gegeben. 1831 Die Ostmauer stürzt ein, große Teile fallen den Abhang hinab in den Tipalt Burn. Historische Postkarten belegen aber, dass die Ruine ein beliebter Ausflugsort war. 1999 Die Northumberland National Park-Verwaltung pachtet Thirlwall Castle für 99 Jahre und beginnt umfangreiche Dokumentations- und Sicherungsarbeiten. Bei Restaurierungsarbeiten an der Ruine des eineinhalb Meilen südlich gelegenen Blekinsopp Castle wird der Eingang zu einem Geheimgang in Richtung Thirlwall entdeckt. Es wird vermutet, dass beide Burgen einst durch einen unterirdischen Fluchttunnel verbunden waren, für den Falls, dass eine der beiden angegriffen und überrannt werden würde.
