Un « climat » en Bourgogne est une parcelle de terrain qui possède un nom, ainsi qu’un sous-sol, une exposition, des caractéristiques hygrométriques particulières, différents des parcelles adjacentes. Ce climat produit un vin qui ne peut être produit nulle part ailleurs. La Côte de Beaune et la Côte de Nuits constituent une mosaïque de 1247 Climats différents de Beaune à Maranges. On a découvert, en 2008, une vigne gallo-romaine datant de 100 avant J.-C., mais ce sont les moines bénédictiins (Cluny fondée en 910) puis cisterciens (Citeaux 1098) qui ont hiérarchisé les Climats, amélioré la qualité des vins, construit des celliers et des cuveries. Les ducs de bourgogne vont offrir aux vins de leurs domaines un rayonnement considérable.

Michel Magnien was born in 1946 and worked alongside his father Bernard from an early age. The Magniens sold their grapes to the local cooperative until 1993 when his son Frédéric joined the family business and persuaded his father to bottle the entire harvest themselves. Frédéric Magnien began experimenting with organic practices in the late 1990s and the entire production was certified biodynamic by Demeter in 2015.
