Star Alliance Launches “Connection Service ” at Chicago O’Hare Proactive Help for Customers with Tight Connections STAR ALLIANCE LAUNCHES “CONNECTION SERVICE ” AT CHICAGO O’HARE PROACTIVE HELP FOR CUSTOMERS WITH TIGHT CONNECTIONS CHICAGO, USA – September 7th, 2017 – Star Alliance has launched a new Connection Service to assist customers arriving at Chicago O’Hare International Airport to reach their onward flight with another Star Alliance member carrier. The enhancement for customers in United’s home hub will carry new branding that will be progressively rolled out for similar services operating at 11 major airports around the world. The Connection Service springs into action if an incoming flight is delayed. Software monitors the transfer window for customers with an onward flight and flags any cases where a customer and any checked bags appear in danger of missing a connection. “ It is frustrating for customers, and indeed for the airlines, when relatively small delays have the knock-on effect that a connection is missed, ” said Star Alliance VP Customer Experience Christian Draeger. “Connection Service staff are alerted as soon as a connection is at risk. They meet the customer on arrival and take the necessary steps to ensure that the customer and the bags are expedited and reach their onward flight. If a connection cannot be reached, the customer is assisted with re-booking.” Chicago is the fourth biggest transfer hub for Star Alliance worldwide, with almost 750,000 passengers connecting from one Star Alliance carrier to another each year. “ The Connection Service provides peace of mind to customers with a tight connection,” said Mike Hanna, Vice President of United’s Page 1 of 3 Page 2 of 3 O’Hare operations. “This is a significant benefit for our customers, further strengthening the position of Chicago as a leading transfer hub. ” Customers arriving on international flights need to clear customs and immigration before connecting. Those customers benefiting from the Connection Service are eligible to use the Express Connection lane, to enable them to get through customs and immigration quicker. Checked bags that need to be rechecked are specially tagged so they are handled faster. Star Alliance members online at O’Hare are: Air Canada, Air India, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Avianca, Copa Airlines, EVA Air, Lufthansa, LOT Polish Airlines, SWISS, Scandinavian Airlines, Turkish Airlines and United. Together they offer almost 17,500 flights per week to 187 destinations in 31 countries. Star Alliance Connection Centres have been operating behind the scenes for more than a decade, expediting checked bags at risk of missing their onward flight at 11 airports. Under the Alliance’s strategy of further improving the customer experience, enhancing this service to include assisting passengers with tight connections is being evaluated in all locations. A passenger service is already available in Frankfurt (FRA), Houston (IAH) and Munich (MUC) as part of the Connection Centre product. About Star Alliance: The Star Alliance network was established in 1997 as the first truly global airline alliance to offer worldwide reach, recognition and seamless service to the international traveller. Its acceptance by the market has been recognized by numerous awards, including the Air Transport World Market Leadership Award and Best Airline Alliance by both Business Traveller Magazine and Skytrax. The member airlines are: Adria Airways, Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air China, Air India, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Avianca, Avianca Brasil, Brussels Airlines, Copa Airlines, Croatia Airlines, EGYPTAIR, Ethiopian Airlines, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, SWISS, TAP Portugal, Turkish Airlines, THAI and United. Before the mega- Alliances, there was interlining, facilitated by IATA Like dogs marking territory, airlines around the world are sniffing each other's tail fins looking for partners." Daniel Riordan “The hardest thing in working on an alliance is to coordinate the activities of people who have different instincts and a different language, and maybe worship slightly different travel gods, to get them to work together in a culture that allows them to respect each other’s habits and convictions, and yet work productively together in an environment in which you can’t specify everything in advance.” Michael E. Levine “Beware a pact with the devil.” Martin Shugrue Airline Motivations For Alliances • the desire to achieve greater economies of scale, scope, and density; • the desire to reduce costs by consolidating redundant operations; • the need to improve revenue by reducing the level of competition wherever possible as markets are liberalized; and • the desire to skirt around the nationality rules which prohibit multinational ownership and cabotage. • STAR ALLIANCE to ESTABLISH CENTRE of EXCELLENCE in SINGAPORE New Setup Reflects Global Character of the Alliance
STAR ALLIANCE TO ESTABLISH CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN SINGAPORE New setup reflects global character of the Alliance FRANKFURT – March 22, 2021 – Star Alliance will establish a management office in the city state of Singapore later this year. This was a decision taken by its Chief Executive Board, comprising the Chief Executive Officers of its 26 member airlines, who considered a new centre of excellence to be an important dimension of positioning the Alliance to deliver on its post-Coronavirus strategy, and for it to remain innovative, resilient and nimble. All businesses are reimagining a post-pandemic world fundamentally changed by COVID-19, and the associated disruption to global networks, economies, and the livelihoods of many. A consequence of the world’s reaction to COVID-19 has been the destabilizing effect it has had on aviation. This decision to future-proof the Alliance was made against this backdrop. Effectively, Star Alliance will maintain two centres of excellence internationally, in keeping with the global character of the Alliance. The Singapore office will complement the long-standing office in Frankfurt, Germany and will focus on progressing its strategy in digital customer experience. Two members of the Alliance, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines, have established innovation hubs in the City, another benefit as the Alliance continues its ground-breaking digital customer experience innovations. Singapore was selected based on considered criteria, such as access to innovation and global competitiveness. Singapore has also been ranked highly for the ease of doing business by the World Bank on a consistent basis and has been ranked the most competitive country in the world on several occasions.

  • Spanair Reinforces Its Flight Offer Between Spain and Scandinavia
2008-04-09 13:20 CEST Spanair reinforces its flight offer between Spain and Scandinavia The company is consolidating its position as market leader in the air travel offer between Spain and Scandinavia by offering a total of 56 weekly frequencies Madrid, April 9th, 2008.- Spanair confirms that Scandinavia is one of its strategic destinations, and that it is the leading carrier in terms of the number of frequencies it operates between Copenhagen and Spain, respectively Stockholm and Spain together with its codeshare partner SAS Scandinavian Airlines. Leader between Copenhagen and Spain Spanair offers most of the flights operated between Copenhagen and Spain, with a total of 37 weekly frequencies between the Danish capital and Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca. During the Danish holiday period, Spanair operates as many as 40 weekly frequencies between the two countries, and is significantly increasing its flight offer to Malaga and Palma de Mallorca. Spanair therefore has consolidated its position at each of the Spanish destinations that link with the city of Copenhagen, and its position as leader on the Barcelona route is particularly noteworthy, with the airline controlling over half the market together with its codeshare partner SAS Scandinavian Airlines. For the summer season, Spanair will increase weekly frequencies between Copenhagen and Barcelona to 19 services each way. Moreover, the flights are specially adapted to the needs of business passengers, given that departure times for Spanish destinations and for Copenhagen allow for an outward trip first thing in the morning and a return flight the same day. Also leisure travellers can take great advantage of the wide product offer including the connections to the Spanair domestic and international network.

  • The Evolution of Selected Enterprises in the Aviation Industry in Romania and Poland After 1989
Revista de Științe Politice. Revue des Sciences Politiques • No. 67 • 2020: 170 - 180 ORIGINAL PAPER From a state-owned giant to a market enterprise? The evolution of selected enterprises in the aviation industry in Romania and Poland after 1989 Andrzej Dubicki1) Abstract Year 1989 was an important turning point, not only in the political history of Poland and Romania, but also for the transport sector of both countries. Political events allowed for a thorough reconstruction of the air transport sector in both countries. Both airfleets entered the new political reality as state-owned enterprises, though with different traditions. Both countries have begun transforming their own aviation market in a similar place, with a rather outdated air fleet, with some few modern aircraft. Nevertheless, the further development of respective aviation markets took place in different ways, as long as no native competitor for LOT appeared in Poland for various reasons, the situation is somewhat different in Romania and TAROM now experiences serious competition from the low-cost carrier BlueAir. Both state-owned enterprises had to take advantage of public aid, LOT in 2012, while TAROM in 2020.Time will show whether the Romanian national carrier will be able to repeat the success of the Polish one, which after a period of recession is now able to expand on the European market. The aim of the article is to show and compare the development of the Polish and Roumanian air markets and to try to find common points of the situation created after 1989. There will be used various sources, including monographs, analysis and articles of this specific topic.
