Re-reading the issue while preparing for this issue of Journey Planet, I asked a few of the authors if they would be willing to let me include their articles, giving the authors the chance to revise and update what they wrote eight years ago. The winter was not nearly as brutal here in Maryland as it was last year, but there were still many consecutive days where the outdoor temperature never made it above freezing. I admit that I really should be used to it – I grew up in far northern New York State where lake-effect snow was so common that I thought it was the most natural thing in the world to wake up on a cold December morning and look out the window to see a couple of feet of new-fallen snow. That far north, White Christmases were the rule and I can remember many White Thanksgivings and even a White Halloween. It doesn’t seem much of an exaggeration to claim that part of the country has only two seasons – winter and July. But anyway. Summer is almost here, and with it comes baseball season. Last year I set a personal record by seeing baseball games in four different major league ballparks.     What Almost Was 63 What Almost Was: The Politics of the Contemporary Alternate History Novel Matthew Schneider-Mayerson Between August of 1995 and July of 1996, Speaker of the House of Rep- resentatives Newt Gingrich published two books. One, To Renew America, a folksy Republican polemic cobbled together from Gingrich’s speeches, served as a sequel to Contract with America, the blueprint of the conservative movement that assumed control of Congress in 1995.1 The other was 1945, coauthored with William R. Forstchen, a novel set in an alternate universe.2 In 1945’s divergent timeline, Germany does not declare war on the United States, the Soviet Union is split into fragments, and the United States and Germany have settled into a cold war. Nazi soldiers parachute into the United States to a capture a nuclear facility in Tennessee, but posses of arms-bearing American veterans successfully defend their country. 1945 was representative of the flourishing genre of alternate history novels in all but two ways: an author’s celebrity and its media exposure. Due to Gingrich’s status as the public leader of the conservative renaissance of the mid-1990s, 1945 was widely reviewed in mainstream publications. Treated as a curiosity and ridiculed for its poor literary quality, very few reviewers noted the libertarian themes in 1945, and even fewer placed it in the context of an inchoate literary genre.3 1995 can be considered the birth year of the alternate history novel as a genre. As a conceptual category, the counterfactual, as historians term their what-if narratives, has been pursued in print since classical Greece, if not earlier.

She will attend Dublin 2019 - An Irish Worldcon, the 77th Annual World Science Fiction Convention to be held in Dublin, Ireland on August 15-19, 2019 (see their website at https://dublin2019.com ), and she plans to travel to Titancon and additional destinations throughout the United Kingdom and perhaps elsewhere during her trip. From TAFF News Redux #2, here is some biographical information about Geri Sullivan: Originally from Battle Creek, Michigan, Geri did not truly meet anybody in science fiction fandom until moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 1970s. She became an active member of Minn-stf (the Minnesota Science Fiction Society, Inc.), by getting involved in working on Minicon, the annual Minn-stf run Easter science fiction convention, hosting club parties meetings at her home (called Toad Hall), where many a celebrated music party would run until dawn, and eventually she began publishing her fanzine Idea. By 1990, Geri’s fannish activity level increased – if you can believe that was possible. She helped bring Corflu to Minneapolis in 1989, ran the fan lounge and the Minneapolis in ’73 party suite at Magicon, the 1992 Worldcon in Orlando, Florida, and has also worked on Worldcon fan lounges, publications, and served assorted Worldcons in other functions. In 2004 Geri moved to Massachusetts, joined NESFA, and could have retired to a bucolic life in the wooded wilds of New England, but did not.
