Despite the military-sounding titles, USPS officers’ Boating education is a primary objective of the USPS. titles actually reflect our heritage as a yacht club. Cavalier The Vessel Safety Check Program is an effective, Morgan Flanagan proactive, and preventative public service unique to the Bonnie H. Fried recreational boating community. It ensures that key Elliot S. Hammer marine safety equipment is on board the vessel, that it Gregory A. Judge functions within prescribed limits, and is compliant with federal, state and local regulations. It gives the vessel Holly E. Judge examiner the opportunity to discuss with the boat owner

INSIGNIA In 1912, when gasoline-powered vessels were first (Partial List) appearing, Roger Upton, Rear Commander of the Boston Yacht Club, formed the Power Squadron of the Boston Yacht Club, a club within a club for powerboat owners. The purpose of this club was to provide instruction in safe handling of powerboats and to facilitate civic contributions by the power boating community. The Power Squadron was immediately successful. In 1914, representatives from 70 boating associations and yacht clubs met at the New York Yacht Club to form the United States Power Squadrons. Over the years, USPS has expanded the meaning of “Power Squadron” to include all boats regardless of whether their means of propulsion is an engine, sail or manual power. The USPS has also broadened its scope of social, educational and civic activities.
Facts About The ATLANTA SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON
The Atlanta Power Squadron (APS) was founded on 16
July 1953 with 21 charter members. When APS was
founded classes in Seamanship, Advanced Piloting,
Junior Navigation, Navigation, Engine Maintenance,
Sail, and Weather were offered. Courses added since
then include Piloting, Marine Electronics, Instructor
Qualification and Cruise Planning.
Some years ago, the Atlanta Power Squadron added the
word “Sail” to its official name in recognition of the large
number of sailing enthusiasts among the membership.
