General This section describes how the information about each member listed in the roster is gathered and some of the abbreviations used. The primary source for the member information is the USPS national database. The information in the roster listing section is directly downloaded from the USPS national database. All updates are made to the national database. As with any database, the information in the National database may be incorrect or outdated. We have made a concerted effort through e- mail, phone and personal contact to ensure all information is published correctly. If errors remain, we sincerely apologize. To correct any errors or omission, or to provide updates, please contact the Squadron Secretary at [email protected] . The Secretary will update the national database as appropriate; however, he cannot change ranks, grades or courses completed. Please contact National directly for such corrections. Contact numbers can be found in The Ensign. Rank Abbreviations Despite the military-sounding titles, USPS officers’ titles actually reflect our heritage as a yacht club. In the USPS, a member’s rank reflects the highest office in which they have served during their membership. If they are no longer in that office, the word “Past” is appended to the rank; e.g., a “Past Commander” has at some prior time served as a squadron commander. Titles are normally abbreviated and used in all written communications. Course Abbreviations Boating education is a primary objective of the USPS. We offer twelve courses, classified into two groups: Advanced Grades and Electives.
Advanced Grades Advanced Grade courses teach seamanship and navigation skills. The courses are designed to be taken sequentially. The abbreviation of the highest Advanced Grade completed is often appended to a member’s name; e.g. Lt/C John Doe, AP. Senior Navigator A member who has successfully completed all twelve Advanced Grade and Elective courses is designated a “Senior Navigator” and is said to hold a “Full Certificate.” SN Senior Navigator

Public Boating Courses: Boating classes open to the general public are usually held at the Heiskell School at 3260 Northside Drive, NW Atlanta, GA 30305. The classes may be held at various other locations in metro Atlanta. For information on these classes, send e-mail to [email protected]

The Nelle B. Moon Award The Nelle B. Moon Member Involvement Award is presented annually to the one member of the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron who has distinguished him- or herself in service to the squadron and participation in squadron activities, while not a member of the Bridge or the Executive Committee.
The award is in honor of P/C Nelle B. Moon who served as Commander of the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron in 1988. P/C Moon was the first woman to serve as our Commander and was intensely dedicated to developing and furthering the goals of the United States Power Squadron.
Recipients of the Nelle B. Moon Member Involvement Award have dedicated many long and often thankless hours to improving the squadron and advancing our objectives. The award is the Atlanta squadron’s way to say “Thank You!”

WATERLOG The Waterlog, the squadron newsletter, is published approximately six times per year. Submissions for publication in the Waterlog are due to the editor by the 15th of the month before publication. Send articles, announcements or other information by e-mail.
Vessel Safety Check (VSC) Program The Vessel Safety Check Program is an effective, proactive, and preventative public service unique to the recreational boating community. It ensures that key marine safety equipment is on board the vessel, that it functions within prescribed limits, and is compliant with federal, state and local regulations. It gives the vessel examiner the opportunity to discuss with the boat owner the purpose of the safety equipment; to acquaint him or her with the regulatory requirements; to emphasize specific safety procedures and practices; to answer safety-related questions; and to encourage boater education.
The Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron maintains an active program to train and certify Vessel Examiners, and to conduct Vessel Safety Checks as a courtesy to recreational boaters. VSCs are totally voluntary; no report is made to the DNR or to the Coast Guard about any inspection.
Last year, ASPS conducted a new Club Record of 82 inspections.

UNIFORMS The wearing of uniforms at USPS functions is entirely optional and voluntary. At all occasions, appropriate non-uniform dress is always acceptable. The uniform classifications can be found at the National Website www.usps.org as a convenient reference for members who chooses to wear the USPS uniform.

Facts About the United States Power Squadron The United States Power Squadron (USPS) is a private, non-profit, fraternity whose members are socially compatible and share a love of boating. The USPS has no formal association with the military or with any government agency. In 1912, when gasoline-powered vessels were first appearing, Roger Upton, Rear Commander of the Boston Yacht Club, formed the Power Squadron of the Boston Yacht Club, a club within a club for power boat owners. The purpose of this club was to provide instruction in safe handling of power boats and to facilitate civic contributions by the power boating community. The Power Squadron was immediately successful. In 1914, representatives from 70 boating associations and yacht clubs met at the New York Yacht Club to form the United States Power Squadrons. Over the years, USPS has expanded the meaning of “Power Squadron” to include all boats regardless of whether their means of propulsion is an engine, sail or manual power. The USPS has also broadened its scope of social, educational and civic activities.
Facts About the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron The Atlanta Power Squadron (APS) was founded on 16 July 1953 with 21 charter members. When APS was founded classes in Seamanship, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation, Navigation, Engine Maintenance, Sail, and Weather were offered. Courses added since then include Piloting, Marine Electronics, Instructor Qualification and Cruise Planning. Some years ago, the Atlanta Power Squadron added the word “Sail” to its official name in recognition of the large number of sailing enthusiasts among the membership.
Facts About USPS District 17 Dixie District The USPS is organized into 33 regional districts. The Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron is part of USPS District 17 (D17), the Dixie District. In fact, ASPS is one of the original 5 squadrons in D17 when it was formed on 8 November 1954. The original squadrons were: Cape Fear Atlanta Chattahoochee Charleston St. Simon Today, District 17 serves the inland areas of Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Thirteen squadrons currently comprise District 17: Asheville Power Squadron Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron Chattanooga Power Squadron Huntsville Power Squadron Johnson City Power Squadron Knoxville Power Squadron Memphis Sail & Power Squadron Montgomery Power Squadron Muscogee Power Squadron Music City Power Squadron Oak Ridge Power Squadron Rome Power Squadron Vulcan Power Squadron Our district represents a wide variety of boating and sailing adventures including the massive and beautiful rivers and reservoirs of the Tennessee Valley, peaceful mountain lakes, whitewater rapids, and even the mighty Mississippi.
