This calm and picturesque re gion invites you to indulge in its charms, and to take your time while driving on its winding roads with little traffic. If you make a small detour from the proposed route towards the first destination of the Raid, you will find yourselves in the town of Klanjec. The place is known in Croatia as a small town where the poet Antun Mihanović wrote the lyrics of the national anthem of Croatia, while inspired by the beauty of the landscape of the River. Klanjec is also the birthplace of the prominent sculptor Antun Augustinčić, who donated his valuable collection of sculptures to his home town, and thus encouraged the construction of the first officially designated museum in the Klanjec Croatian Zagorje region - the Antun Augustinčić Gallery. The Gallery itself is surrounded by a sculpture park, which is an integral part of the permanent exhibition.

If you wish to relax in thermal baths, on this part of your journey you can visit Thermae , which are located at the very spring of thermal waters and the healing mud. This tourist recreational centre is surrounded by the green Zagorje hills, and a gorgeous landscape. This could be a perfect place for you to relax.

A little further up, towards the border with Slovenia lies . Ethno village of Kumrovec is the largest traditionally decorated area in Croatia that evokes the authentic look of Zagorje village from the beginning of the 20th century. In about forty renovated buildings of traditional architecture you can find out how the Kumrovec ancestors lived. On the one hand, the arranged exhibits Kumrovec speak about the customs and the everyday life of the peasant and his family, and on the other, they also show various traditional crafts, that the inhabitants of Zagorje villages practised to provide for their families. You will also see the traditional yards and gardens, barns and hampers – everything that made a rich mosaic of life in the countryside. Nevertheless, Kumrovec is best known for the birth house of Josip Broz Tito, located in the centre of the village. The restored birth house is a part of the farm of the Broz cooperative family, along with historic and ethnographic exhibits.

A bit further up, Veliki Tabor Castle is located not far from Desinić. The Castle's name derives from the name of the camp, which meant war camp, or fortifications built to defend against the Turks. © Hrvatski 2cv Citroёn Klub Veliki Tabor Castle

STAGE 1 Veliki Tabor is one of the best preserved late medieval and Renaissance fortified cities in the continental Croatia.

One of the most attractive castles in Croatia, Trakošćan Castle, is situated twenty kilometres northwest of Krapina. The Castle is the place where numerous protocol events are organised by Croatian statesmen, but it is also a museum. Trakošćan Castle was built in the 13th century as a small fortress within the system of the forts of the Zagorje Principality. It was expanded and altered several times over the centuries. As of 1953, there is a permanent museum exhibit there, which in addition to the faithful reconstruction of the period ambient displays valuable examples of Baroque furniture and small pieces. The immediate vicinity of the Castle is designed as a Trakošćan landscaped park, where the lake, meadows, trees and shrubs form a harmonious horticultural whole.

After taking a break to rest, you could head towards Krapina. Once there, do not miss visiting the Krapina Neanderthal Museum, which is located not far from the world famous site of Krapina Neanderthals “Hušnjakovo”, both of which make a unique whole. The architecture of the museum evokes the habitat of the prehistoric man: the semi-cave - whose volume, proportions and the front are a result of the analysis done on the former appearance of today's collapsed semi-cave of Krapina.

The village of Radoboj is located not far from Krapina, and it is a unique site of sulphur and coal; a place rich in mining tradition, and valuable fossil and archaeological discoveries. It is in Radoboj that the machine for refining Krapina Neanderthal Museum sulphur was used for the first time – today, it is widely known as the Radoboj machine. You can experience the rich history of Radoboj, which is still unknown to many people, in the Museum Radboa!

Oldtimer Museum Presečki represents more than 25 years of dedicated collection and restoration of oldtimer vehicles, which was summarised and presented to the public on 1100 square meters of exhibition space, where visitors can immerse themselves in the history of car and motorcycle culture. More than twenty cars, as well as more than sixty motorcycles, are presented there, while vehicles from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s represent the most important exhibits. The city of Sisak was a commercial and agricultural centre, and thanks to its oil refinery, iron and steel factory, river port, as well as milling and baking production - it was also one of the largest industrial cities throughout Croatian history. During the period of battles with the conquering Ottoman forces in the 16th century, Sisak became the most important defence point of the north-western part of Croatia. The legendary Battle of Sisak took place on June 22, 1593, around the fortress of Sisak at the confluence of Sisak the rivers of Kupa and Sava, and this area is known today as the Old Town. The Old Town is an example of a Renaissance fortress, and it is also a zero category monument. One of the places you could also visit in Sisak is definitely the Sculpture Park. Its sculptures were created by members of the Sisak Steelworks Artists Colony, and are set up in the public area of Caprag settlement in Sisak. The Sculpture Park is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia. In addition, the Lonja field is one of the last areas in Europe where traditional grazing is preserved, and livestock still roams freely on large joint pastures. You can discover the beauty and uniqueness of the Lonja field by foot, bike, canoe, river ferry or boat.

Lonjsko polje

The most famous village in the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park STAGE 3 is definitely Čigoč - the first European Stork Village, which was awarded that title by the EuroNatur Foundation dedicated to the protection of European natural heritage, due to the large number of white stork nests located in the village. You cannot help but notice the nests, as they are found on almost every house. More than 200 storks and only about 120 people live there in perfect harmony. People take care of these magnificent birds, and are trying to disturb them as little as possible in order to preserve and possibly increase their population.

The village of Krapje is a historical building area where the originality of traditional architecture has been preserved in its totality. The village has the status of architectural heritage village, and it represents a unique Lonjsko polje example of traditional wood architecture in a floodplain environment, with a characteristic linear spatial organisation of the village. In addition to wooden houses, other public historical facilities can be seen in Krapje as well: the church, building of the firefighters’ association, municipal building, water mill, cemetery, and a local inn.
