Faithful Adventists Leave Lasting Legacy of God's Love Faithful Adventists Leave Lasting Legacy of God’s Love The Seventh-day Adventist church is blessed with members whose long lives are dedicated to service and sharing Biblical truths with their community. Two members of the Southeastern California Conference illustrate the positive impact that each life can have when committed to Christ. Helen Kirkpatrick moved to Los Angeles from Texas when she was 15 years old. Her lifelong friend Mildred Sweeney Bradley introduced her to Don Franklin, and Helen and Don married just days before he left to serve in Europe at the height of World War II. Upon returning from the war, Don worked on the construction team for the Los Angeles Union Seventh-day Adventist School in El Segundo. “A coworker invited them to attend a George Vandeman Seminar in Lynwood,” their daughter Vicky said. “They were immediately drawn to the health message.” In 1949, they were baptized at the First African American church in Los Angeles. The Franklins built a life of service to others. Don built the Kansas Avenue and Mt. Rubidoux churches, and Don and Helen became charter members of the new congregations. In 2014, they were honored to have the gymnasium and conference room at the Mt. Rubidoux church named in their honor. In addition to full-time work and raising six children, Helen was active in the Dorcas Society. “She had an open door for whoever needed help,” said her daughter Stephanie. “She would invite single mothers to stay in our home and later fostered many children.” Helen celebrated her 95th birthday on October 22, 2020, at the Linda Valley Assisted Living Facility with family and friends across the country joining in on Zoom. Faithful Adventists Leave Lasting Legacy of God’s Love always been committed to church and family,” said her daughter Donna. “All her life, she dedicated her energy to helping others.” Ernesto Vergara was born and raised in Mexico before emigrating to the United States with his future wife Eriberta in 1976. Ernesto began a job in manufacturing and was invited by a coworker to attend a Seventh-day Adventist church service. Ernesto and Eriberta felt that Adventism answered many of the questions that they had about their Catholic faith, and they began Bible studies. On October 25, 1983, they committed their lives to the Lord and committed to a life with each other as they were baptized and married on the same day at the Paramount church. Ernesto and Eriberta had two boys each from previous marriages, and they added another boy and girl to their family. Ernesto’s parents and siblings in Mexico cut off contact when he became an Adventist. With his conversion, he lost the family that he was born into, but he gained a large spiritual family that grew every year as he gave Bible studies, led Sabbath School programs, and distributed editions of Steps to Christ with his phone number inside. Despite having to drop out of formal education in the fourth grade, Ernesto was a keen student and teacher of the Bible throughout his adult life. “As a child, he had a stutter,” said his daughter Priscilla, “but God unleashed his tongue when he began to speak at church, and he was able to give Bible studies every night of the week.” “Each time he would meet someone new,” Priscilla said, “he would tell them ‘God had a purpose for us to meet.’” This would include the doctors and health care professionals he met toward the end of his life. With every interaction, he continued to share his faith in the goodness of the Lord.     Youth Sabbath School Leader A ministry description for local church leaders Introduction God asks the church to be a community of people sharing a common purpose and fellowship, continually growing in faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God. Paul describes the church as Christ’s “body” (Eph. 1:22). God calls us into His body for the purpose of establishing a saving relationship with Him and community with one another. The Holy Spirit convicts our minds, leads us to repentance, and plants us within the church. You experience the presence of Jesus Christ in the world within your church; the world experiences the living presence of Jesus Christ as it witnesses your church. When a local church serves the world it is an expression of the love of Christ to the world. Thus, the church is a servant body. Created for service, it serves the Lord in praise, serves one another in love, and serves the world in humility. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10). God calls every member of the church into ministry. The church is “a kingdom of priests” (I Peter 2:9). Our priesthood is to each other within the church and to the world. A youth leader, like any other church officer, is a ministering servant of God. As a youth ministry leader it is important that you see teens as an important part of the present church, not just the church to come.

(Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan), is the senior pastor of the Georgia-Cumberland Academy church in Calhoun, Georgia. He has worked as a registered nurse, and served as a pastor and academy chaplain in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Georgia. It Is Written, a Seventh-day Adventist television ministry founded by George Vandeman, began a weekly broadcast in selected American cities in 1956 and has since extended its reach throughout the world. The first religious television program to broadcast in color, It Is Written has innovated methods of using mass media technologies to augment local evangelism throughout its history. The Emergence of Adventist Television Ministry (1939-1955) The Adventist church became involved in television ministry in 1949, a decade after the televising of the New York World’s Fair in 1939 demonstrated the potential of this new medium.1 After the end of World War II in 1945, as more and more Americans acquired television sets, Adventists saw both its dangers as an immoral influence and its great potential in reaching large numbers of people with the message of Jesus.2 The success demonstrated by the Voice of Prophecy radio broadcast, helped prepare Adventists to recognize the evangelistic potential of modern media. R. H. Libby, J. L. Tucker, and W. A. Fagal pioneered the Adventist use of television as a means of evangelism. On the west coast Tucker started airing The Quiet Hour in 1949.3 In November of that same year, R. H. Libby started airing A Faith to Live By in Baltimore, generating much interest and hundreds of Bible studies, despite working with no budget, no music director, and no musicians.4 Soon another program, Heralds of Hope, with evangelist Robert L.

The most successful form of advertising proved to be thirty-second spot advertisements on radio. On all occasions when radio advertisements were broadcast the responses to the free book offers were far above normal. On one Sunday the responses were five times higher than usual. One lady wrote in and thanked us for advertising the "It Is Written" programme on radio. She had not previously viewed Pastor Vandeman. These advertisements, broadcast between twelve midnight and six in the morning, cost just one dollar each. On March 20 Pastor Vandeman recorded advertising tags here in Adelaide, to be used in all future radio advertisements for "It Is Written." Pastor Vandeman also recorded two television commercials, to be broadcast free by the two channels carrying the "It Is Written" programme in this conference. Also while in Adelaide, Pastor Lonnie Melashenko taped interviews with five people; to be included in future "It Is Written" programmes.
