1996 Jet Run Foaled in 1968 and bred to run, Jet Run might have been expected to be a successful racehorse. Instead, the 16.3-hand bay gelding turned out to be one of the most consistent “big occasion” show jumpers of his era, winner of no less than three Pan American Games Gold Medals (two for the U.S., one for Mexico), the World Cup Final, the President’s Cup, the AGA Horse of the Year title, two World Championship Bronze Medals, and innumerable Grand Prix and individual competitions. Bred in Maryland at Winter Place Farm, by Jet Traffic out of a Heliodorus mare, Jet Run was ridden in hunter and jumper classes by Bernie Traurig and Melanie Smith and achieved early prominence by winning the New York Grand Prix at age six. Sold to Mexico shortly afterwards, he distinguished himself in the 1975 Pan American Games with Fernando Senderos, winning the individual Gold and a team Silver. Jet Run remained in Mexico ownership through the 1976 Olympics, in which he and Senderos finished 21st. Thereafter he was purchased by F. Eugene Dixon and brought back to the U.S. for Michael Matz to ride. He quickly found his best form with his new rider, winning the American Jumping Derby and a Grand Prix in Toronto in 1977. From then on, he went from strength to strength, winning the American Gold Cup and both team and individual Gold Medals in the 1979 Pan American Games in Puerto Rico, along with a second American Gold Cup, the Grand Prix of New York and Washington’s President’s Cup in 1980. In 1981 the pair topped the world’s best jumpers at the World Cup Final in Birmingham, England and also earned the AGA Horse of the Year title. Matz rode Jet Run for the U.S. in the 1982 World Championship and for four years on the fall circuit. After finishing the Florida Circuit in 1985 Jet Run was retired to the Dixons’ farm in Pennsylvania. At the time of his retirement, Jet Run was second to Calypso in career winnings on the AGA circuit and third behind Idle Dice and Calypso with 14 Grand Prix wins..

A critical mass media approach is applied to the analysis of the role of corporate communications in the construction, representation and consumption of international sports participations and Puerto Rican athletes. Textual analyses of articles, testimonies and films are combined with political economy approaches that seek to question the ways American mass media‟s intervention in Olympic sports undermine the possibility of political power and mobilization for symbolic sports sovereignties that operate in colonial territories like the island of Puerto Rico. This thesis work also questions those discourses that describe the island‟s sports sovereignty as an instrument of resistance capable of generating political power in favor of political decolonization for the territory and its citizens. The operation of Puerto Rico‟s sports sovereignty as a form of commodity within a neo-liberal market economy threatens its progressive politics possibilities and instead transforms it into a reactionary practice that reproduces forms of media imperialism as it also fails to question the United States dominance on the island.

The Los Angeles City High School District was founded in 1890. With all of the outstanding athletes who have been a part of our schools over the course of more than a century, we are proud to showcase these prominent athletes, coaches and contributors. This year’s inductees include Warren Moon, Quincy Watts, Al Scates, Donna Caponi Byrnes, Sidney Wicks, Pat Harvey, Gene Vollnogle, Garret Anderson, Kiki Vandeweghe, Robin Yount, and many other outstanding representatives of our schools. Some of the inductees tonight have already been inducted into their sport’s professional Hall of Fame, such as baseball legend Eddie Murray, football star Mike Haynes, and golf pro Donna Caponi Byrnes. This class also recognizes inductees who were outstanding high school and college athletes, to include basketball star and Los Angeles Police Captain Anita Ortega, softball star Laura Espinoza Watson, and Olympic star Quincy Watts. Along with the outstanding professional athletes who will be inducted this evening, are those teachers and coaches who personified the goal of mentoring not only outstanding athletes, but outstanding students as well. Among this group are Volleyball Coach Al Scates, Softball Coach Carolyn Gunny, and the trailblazer for girls’ high school sports in Los Angeles, Pat Harvey. This class also includes Olympic Gold Medal winners Lenny Krazelburg and Sue Gossick, Florence Griffith-Joyner, NCAA Coach Al Scates, and athlete and prominent sportswriter, Bill Henry.

Webster 2018. Abstract This thesis highlights the consequences of the 1980 US boycott of the Olympic Games in Moscow from the perspective of the Olympic boxers. Beginning with a review of scholarly work on the Olympics and their surrounding politics, I outline how the White House, under President Jimmy Carter, manipulated the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) into supporting a boycott. I conclude that the political actions of the Carter Administration affected an entire nation's participation in an Olympic event. Exploring the socio-political circumstances surrounding the 1980 US Olympic boycott, my study seeks to answer three questions: First, what political tactics did the Carter Administration use to implement a boycott designed to pressure Russia to withdraw troops from Afghanistan? Manipulation of the USOC and threats to cut funding pushed compliance with Carter's agenda. As a result, the Carter administration’s actions included using US boxer Muhammad Ali as a pawn in an effort to persuade athletes to support a boycott. Few athletes felt comfortable speaking out against such high-level political strategies. Historically, the US denounced any nation's attempt to use the Olympic Games to make a political statement; this was exemplified in the US’s decision to send black and Jewish athletes to the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, despite the obvious dangers these athletes faced in the midst of the Nazi regime.

Ahora se nos aproxima un evento de suma relevancia. Los Juegos Panamericanos comenzarán muy pronto en Lima, y el tiro con arco estará presente del 7 al 11 de agosto, con el incentivo adicional de que otorgaremos cuatro cupos para los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio. World Archery ha otorgado a América la sede de tres eventos muy importantes que tendrán lugar en los próximos años: la primera etapa de la Copa Mundial Hyundai en Guatemala 2020, y los Campeonatos Mundiales de Campo (2020) y Aire Libre (2021) en la ciudad de Yankton, en Estados Unidos.
