Forgotten Heritage: the Landscape History of the Norwich Suburbs
Forgotten Heritage: the landscape history of the Norwich suburbs A pilot study. Rik Hoggett and Tom Williamson, Landscape Group, School of History, University of East Anglia, Norwich. This project was commissioned by the Norwich Heritage, Economic and Regeneration Trust and supported by the East of England Development Agency 1 Introduction Over recent decades, English Heritage and other government bodies have become increasingly concerned with the cultural and historical importance of the ordinary, ‘everyday’ landscape. There has been a growing awareness that the pattern of fields, roads and settlements is as much a part of our heritage as particular archaeological sites, such as ancient barrows or medieval abbeys. The urban landscape of places like Norwich has also begun to be considered as a whole, rather than as a collection of individual buildings, by planning authorities and others. However, little attention has been afforded in such approaches to the kinds of normal, suburban landscapes in which the majority of the British population actually live, areas which remained as countryside until the end of the nineteenth century but which were then progressively built over. For most people, ‘History’ resides in the countryside, or in our ancient towns and cities, not in the streets of suburbia. The landscape history of these ordinary places deserves more attention. Even relatively recent housing developments have a history – are important social documents. But in addition, these developments were not imposed on a blank slate, but on a rural landscape which was in some respects preserved and fossilised by urbanisation: woods, hedges and trees were often retained in some numbers, and their disposition in many cases influenced the layout of the new roads and boundaries; while earlier buildings from the agricultural landscape usually survived. -
Minutes of Regular Meeting of Market Weighton Town Council
6341 MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING OF MARKET WEIGHTON TOWN COUNCIL HELD AT THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS ON WEDNESDAY 18 TH APRIL 2012 AT 7.00PM Present: Councillor Hemmerman (Town Mayor and Chair) Botting Chicken Frith King Macqualter Peaks (a) Rudd Smith Stellings Townshend Clerk to the Meeting Mrs Lesley-Jane Holt 1. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Cllr Peaks. 2. AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC TO ADDRESS THE TOWN COUNCIL A resident informed the Council that an Allotment Association had now been set up and that he had agreed to be the Chair Person of the association. The resident set out what they wanted from MWTC and what they would give in return and that they would work in close liaison with the MWTC. The resident also asked that MWTC reconsider allowing cockerels on the allotment as some allotment holders wished to breed rare hens and whilst section 12 of the Allotments Act 1950 stated that “not cockerels for reasons which will be examined later in this document” the notes suggested that there should be no cockerels due to the Control of Pollution Act 1974 (as amended) but that this act is likely not to attract such a prohibition in a rural area (unlike an urban area – due to noise nuisance) due to the fact that if a person moved to the country next to an allotment site with cockerels then that is something that they might have to accept. This matter was discussed and it was agreed that the matter go to the Cemetery and Parks Committee on the 30 th May for further discussion and then ratification of that decision at the next Full Regular Meeting. -

Wherry names are rarely recorded. Answers (rare) to the question 'Whether blind or deaf and dumb' are included in the 'Comments' column below. Only 15 'wherrymen' were noted in Norfolk and one in Suffolk. I have not distinguished between the descriptions 'waterman' and 'water man' etc. Occupations Robert Simper says, in Norfolk Rivers and Harbours (1996), 'In recent times the crew of a wherry have been called skipper and mate, but the old practice was to call them wherryman and waterman.' From my research I would say that 'waterman' could include both skipper and mate. -

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman aims to make a significant contribution to safer, fairer custody and community supervision. One of the most important ways in which we work towards that aim is by carrying out independent investigations into deaths, due to any cause, of prisoners, young people in detention, residents of approved premises and detainees in immigration centres. My office carries out investigations to understand what happened and identify how the organisations whose actions we oversee can improve their work in the future. Mr John Orme, a prisoner at HMP Full Sutton, died of internal bleeding and cirrhosis of the liver in hospital, on 12 June 2015. He was 52 years old. I offer my condolences to Mr Orme’s family and friends. There was a slight delay in sending Mr Orme to hospital in the early hours of 12 June, while a nurse clarified with GPs, the implications of an advance directive Mr Orme had signed about his future care. Better communication about the conditions of the directive might have avoided this. -
